I am glad I am not the only one who found the staff ultra-rude. My $ is as green as the next guys! Want great food and not so much hype? Try Bistro 607 in Raleigh.

good experience 3/17/2006

I'd heard Magnolia Grill could be uneven, but I personally had a really nice dinner, and both my boyfriend and I thought it was a great place to have an anniversary dinner. Both of us had great appetizers and entrees, but the my favorite part was definitely dessert - their pastry chef is fabulous, and the desserts were amazing and out of this world (I was seriously tempted into buying the pastry chef's cookbook). Since it's pricey, it might not be worth the gamble, but I had a good experience. more

NC's Best 8/21/2005

Ben Barker serves up North Carolina's best food at this restaurant in Durham. The former Wellspring Market, he has successfully transformed it into a beautiful restaurant. His ever-changing menu showcases foods from local farmers and boutique ranches. Not to be missed are the desserts, created by his wife, Karen Barker. more

Nice Restaurant. Didn't quite live up to its reputation. 8/6/2005

I've heard wonderful things about the Magnolia Grill. It was good. Not Great or fabulous. The food was competently presented, but nothing spectacular. I was particularly disappointed at the lack of chocolate on the dessert menu. The restaurant is located in what used to be a health food store, so the atmosphere is casual, with pine floors, white tablecloths, and funky paintings on the walls. It is loud, and a meeting place for Duke students and faculty, as well as those who venture over from RTP. more

Great Food 8/4/2005

I took my father here when he was visiting. My father is a tough customer (is in the restaurant business, doesn't mind giving you his unadorned opinion). Not only was the food and service top notch, my Dad was impressed by the complexity and execution of the items on the menu. He said, "everyone is going away from these kind of menus because they are so time and labor intensive, for the owner to do these kind of dishes, it must be a labor of love." Yes, there are newer and trendier restaurants out there, but for a true fine dining experience, this is the real deal. Only disappointment: no creme brulee, custard, mousse type of dessert. more
