Mad Capper: Great Ambiance and Beer 3/21/2011

I am not sure what some of the other reviewers (probably Bud Light drinkers) were thinking about the Mad Capper, but whenever I am down in Stillwater, this bar is a must stop. They change up the microbrews each month, and they are outstanding. When the legendary Bells Hopslam comes out in January, they have it along with many other great varieties. The help and bar tenders are folksy and friendly. This is a real bar, with a fun theme, mainly hats and caps. The food is not expensive as others have said. Standard bar fare, so if you are looking for gourmet try one of the other establishments in town. more

WORST service EVER 10/11/2010

doesn't really deserve one star. Waitress was worst I've had in years, bartender no better. Food was super expensive and doesn't even compare to average fare in a grocery deli. Beer selection was great, but don't venture any further than that...providing you even get the drink you order... more

Unless you're a regular... 9/7/2010

I love Stillwater, but this place needs to go. Unless you are one of their regulars, you are treated like crap. I've given it a few tries. Once, the host asked us to leave because we had been in the bar an hour and only ordered two drinks each. It was a Tuesday night! The food is nothing to boast about. The beer selection is huge, but good luck getting a cold one... plus, it's kinda pricey if you're not coming during Happy Hour. I'd suggest trying one of the many other bars in the area... the ones with much better service and customer care. more

We Have Finally Found Our Spot 4/7/2010

My wife and I have been looking for a weekly ""regular"" place to eat. We were getting tired of the corporate owned chains so we headed to downtown Stillwater. Over the past few months we have gone to about every restaraunt in Stillwater. The one we kept coming back to is the Mad Capper. \r \r The staff is friendly and after only a couple of visits we were treated like regulars. The bartenders remembered our drink choices as well as the servers. We haven't run across a meal that we didn't like and the prices are very reasonable as well. We have had everything from walleye to burgers to nachos and they all have been perfect. \r \r During certain periods of the week it will get a bit busy but there is plenty of room to belly up and have a drink while you wait. I would assume the reason it gets busy is from the return customers. In speaking with the patrons the general concensus is that this is one of their favorite spots. \r \r We are true Minnesota sports fans and I have never walked in when a Minnesota team wasn't being shown when they are playing. If you want to watch something special, ask a bartender and they put it on for you. The sports setting is also very appealing. \r \r In summary, this is the place that we will continue to frequent due to their excellent food, service, and atmosphere. It's a great place to relax, watch a game and have a great meal. Pros: Lots of TV's, Family Owned, Comfortable Setting, Location Cons: None encountered more

Just stay home 2/4/2010

I am not surprised that upon coming to this website I see many other negative reviews! I only wish I would have looked into Map Capper before wasting my time. I ordered a burger and received an appetizer. When I told the waitress that wasn't what I ordered, she argued with me and told me that if I wanted to reorder she would take care of it. When I finally got my burger, it was over cooked and unenjoyable. After waiting ten minutes for my waitress to find the manager my tab was comped. The manager complained about doing it and made it out to be my fault. I won't be going back. Pros: Stillwater location Cons: everything else more

Poor Service 1/26/2010

My wife and I ate here on a Thursday evening. The place was busy but no busier than anywhere else would have been. They have a large selection of beer on tap, but our server knew nothing about the beer itself. When we had a question she said she would ask the bartender and then came back without an answer. She seemed to not care about our experience, the fact that our food was cold, or that our drinks were not completely full when they arrived at our table. We complained to the manager and were given the excuse that they were celebrating a 30th anniversary or something. When I worked in the food industry, that was not an excuse for poor service, but rather a reason to provide better service. I will not be returning. Pros: Full bar Cons: Service, Food, more

Not good for groups or people looking for good service 1/25/2010

Planning on going out for a special occasion? I would not recommend Map Capper for many reasons. My friends and I intended on going to Map Capper for the beginning of a Bachelorette party. We wanted to have a few drinks and eat some food to begin our night. We called earlier in the week and the day of to see if we could reserve the loft (their only table for a larger group) and received the answering machine each time we called. The voicemail message said that the table could be reserved within an hour of your arrival and so we left a message saying that we’d like to be reserve the table and later showed up at the time we had requested the table. Upon our arrival, we were told that the loft had just been sat and that our wait would be anywhere from a half hour and up. We asked about the phone and both the host and the bartender shrugged us off as if it didn’t matter that we had called multiple times. When we finally were seated, our waitress was rude and short. She did not acknowledge the fact that we were celebrating a special event or anything. Our drinks took forever and they couldn’t even figure out how to ring in a stoplight shot. We weren’t even seated ten minutes before the manager rudely asked when we would be leaving so she could TAKE A RESERVATION FOR ANOTHER TABLE! When we confronted her on the fact that we had called multiple times to reserve the table she simply acknowledged that she had received the message. Our fries were soggy and greasy. Our burgers were burnt. Our waitress did not separate our tab and when we asked her to do so she appeared pissed off and came back ten minutes later with half of our tabs separated and told us we would have to figure out the rest of them because her fellow co-workers were frustrated with her for using the machine. Are customers not supposed to be treated with respect and consideration? I guess not at Mad Capper! To top it off, we were charged 18% gratuity on quite possibly some of the worst service I have ever had (being a server myself, I understand being busy and having lots to do, but that should never change the way you treat a table!). We all changed the amount of gratuity and yet were still charged the full amount, which we plan on alerting our credit card companies about since this is something which can be disputed. I would only go here if you merely are bar hopping in Stillwater and want a horrible experience to complain/laugh about later. Pros: Location, Decor Cons: Poor service, rude management, food more

Don't waste your time 1/19/2010

Brought a bachelorette party here for some food and fun. I knew they didn't take reservations but their voicemail (because they NEVER pick up their phone) says to call one hour in advance if you would like to reserve the upstairs loft. I called one hour in advance, three times. Nobody picked up so I left a message. As soon as we got there, they had just seated another group- in the loft. We had to wait for half an hour. (Not a terrible wait but dissapointing when you have a large group and more plans for the night.) While we were waiting, the waitresses were terribly rude as we were in their way because there was nowhere else to stand. Once we got seated, out waitress was a total witch. She was extremely rude and wasn't helpful at all. I asked for a stop light shot for the bride and she said they didn't know how to make it. When we asked her to take a picture she said she was too busy. I understand people get busy, but WE are the reason you are busy and you should do anything and everything you can to get the tip! The food was awful and they asked us TWICE when we would be finished- once before we even got our food! Not only was the food awful, but it was terribly expensive with 18% gratuity already added to each bill. When the bill came, she hadn't split the check. When we asked her to split the check she rolled her eyes and acted very annoyed. When she came back, she hadn't split the check correctly and had to re do it several times. She should have known that with a group this big, the bill would need to be split. Overall a TERRIBLE experience and I would NEVER recommend eating at this place. Stillwater is full of great restaurants, save yourself a trip and go somewhere that is worth your time and money. Pros: location Cons: wait time, poor service, awful food, bar service more

The food is good but the service is slow and not happy. So if your hungry and want to feel like a bad wife is serving your food, than go. I think they have good cooks but they need to work on the staff in the front. more
