LIVE IT UP AT LIVINGSTON RESTAURANT AND BAR 3/25/2011

A great play has to have a unique story that grabs ones attention, touching on every emotion, and when the final curtain falls it leaves its audience wanting more. Located in ATL?s theatre district, Livingston Restaurant and Bar is in every way like seeing a smash Broadway production. The stage is none other than the historic Georgian Terrace Hotel noted for its early twentieth century elegant architecture and opulence. Executive Chef Zeb Stevenson along with his stellar support cast performs nightly for your pleasure by preparing foods that deserve a standing ovation. The opening scene can start and even stop at the ultra-chic bar with its exceptional cocktail and wine list. Here there is a light fare menu that has some tasty munchies that have the same dramatic flair as those served in the main dining room. It is one of the poshest bars in the city with its comfortable lounge-like atmosphere making it easy to relax and enjoy the finer pleasures of life. The excitement takes center stage as the first dish arrives at the table. It is evident that quality and freshness are a must in order to capture the food?s essence that?s presented in a way only an artist can. The Italian sashimi-like treat, Tuna Crudo requires the best ingredients but also the preparation must be precise so the fish doesn?t lose any of its delicate nuances; a pistachio-mint pesto rests on top of a delectable ahi grade yellowfin tuna that?s garnished with lemon zest and jazzy candied mustard; savor each bite of this heavenly dish. If you want pure ecstasy, the thinly sliced Kobe Carpaccio will surely satisfy the desire. As the creamy texture of the rare Eye of Round melts in the mouth, the flavors are intensified by the house made champagne vinegar caviar and shallot salt - the sensation is unbelievable. The starter that showcases Zeb?s mid-western heritage is the Chicken Bratwurst made from sustainably raised Freebird Chickens. It?s served with shaved Brussels sprouts that are pan cooked with toasted caraway seeds, and for dipping a sassy mustard butter ? this juicy sausage is truly a labor of love. Of the intriguing salads there?s one to die for. The spinach salad has such amazing depth of flavors that seem to go on forever. Dressing these tender baby leaves is a creamy Gorgonzola dolce, sweet pan-roasted cippolini onions, and an otherworldly candied bacon vinaigrette. And you know everything goes better with bacon - this bacon is special, it?s cured and smoked on-site. The foods get even more dramatic as one ventures deeper into Livingston?s menu. One of the most well prepared cuts of beef in the city is the Grilled Skirt Steak. A slight tinge of the tropics is infused onto the meat after briefly marinating in papaya juice ? a natural tenderizer. Once the meat has a nice char, this dish really gets up and sings as a smoked butter hollandaise sauce is added. The Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast is what duck breast should taste like ? these moist morsels of meat have a slight gaminess that too often is lost. This juicy breast is brined overnight then cold smoked giving the meat a rich smoky character, which is then glazed with a tangy orange sauce. But what makes this jaw dropping dish scream are the sweet and sour candied kumquats. Before the curtain closes, Pastry Chef Frances Soto has created some masterpieces that will take those few un-aroused taste buds and stand them on their edge. The gingerbread cake has a pumpkin cheesecake center that?s sauced with a spiced reduction of Guinness Stout and a Pecan Florentine. And if this doesn?t cause you to gasp, the Fried Pear and Cranberry pie with a cr?me fraiche will, especially when the caramel bourbon sauce kicks in. Whether it is a stop before heading to the Fox, or simply to satisfy a need to take the senses on a culinary adventure, Livingston Restaurant and Bar has a front row seat waiting just for you to live it up. more

Millionaire Mondays worth it 2/16/2010

We went for Millionaire Monday and I had the lobster and my friends had the steak. It's only $16, you can't beat that. It is only a soup or salad and then the entree, I had read that it came with a side too, but that must have been taken off the menu. Wine was good, desert was miniature, almost hilariously miniature. You get a good sized lobster tail and claws, probably about 1-2lb lobster. The filet was probably about 8 oz. The valet was confused and waived everyone to the parking garage, so I had to drive all the way back around to get valet. Pros: cheap, good food, beautiful location Cons: Valet was confused more

Millionaire Monday 2/1/2010

My husband and I tried the Millionaire Monday menu and it was fabulous. Steak or Lobster a side and salad/soup for $16. The food was oustanding and the portions were reasonable. We also tried an appetizer of calamari wrapped chorizo. It was soo good and like nothing I have tried before. Carolyn was our server and she was attentive, kind and checked back after each course to be sure we were happy. The timing of each course was perfect. I can't wait to go back again to try more of the menu. Pros: service, food, atmosphere more

Great atmosphere! 1/28/2010

I dined at the Livingston before attending a performance at the Fox. The staff is awesome! They're all knowledgeable and professional (never loud, no personal chatter). They set the tone of the entire Livingston ambiance. The decor is memorable. I enjoyed just being in the restaurant and lounge. Pros: excellent service, across from the fox, beautiful restaurant Cons: food is just above average more

Millionaire Monday = Brilliant! 1/26/2010

First off, please note that this is time sensitive. And I don't know how long they're going to run this special... but on Monday nights Livingston does a thing called Millionaire Mondays. The title is a bit of a stretch (you'll feel like a millionaire? don't know about that) but this deal is so good it's stupid. You get a choice of steak or whole lobster, soup or salad plus a side for $16. And they don't hold back on the amount either. I love steak but lobster is 1.)something I usually don't get, and 2.) totally out of this world. It comes already cut, sitting in parts of the shell with a heavy hand of butter already applied. It takes all the guess work out of it and you don't have to wear one of those goofy plastic bibs. The tomato risotto that it sits on is delicious, but honestly after the lobster, it's an afterthought. I'm not sure how long this will last so I'd take full advantage asap. Pros: $16 lobster... or steak. Cons: If you find something wrong w this, something's wrong w you more

Fabulous Spot in Midtown! 1/11/2010

chef gary is out on the floor and gets to know the customers--i feel like he cooks the meals for me and each time he has said hi and made my experience special. the space is gorgeous and the menu is full of southern favs with modern, fresh twists. definitely fun before a show at the fox but also a great date spot or with a group of friends on a non show night! Pros: chopped salad, pork chop, desserts, beautiful space Cons: in a quieter part of midtown but worth the trip! more

Chef Gary Mennie's Return, The Fox's Gain! 9/15/2009

Many of us in Brookwood, were heart broken with the closing of Gary's ""Taurus"". It was wonderful and special. But like the symbol of Atlanta, The Phoenix, Chef Mennie has come back. At the most historical and wonderful corner in the city, Peachtree & Ponce, Chef Mennie has brought his talent to the Georgian Terrace Hotel. Is this the same place where the ""Gone With The Wind"" stars's, came after the films opening, and is now an elegant hip Dining Room & Bar? Of course, this is what Atlanta is all about. And we were all about Gary's creative menu. Being a soup freak, and judging a restaurants talents by the soup, the soup delivered. A Jerusalem Artichoke puree with little bit's of green apple for garnishments, turned out to be one of the best soups in years. The Short Rib Ravioli was amazing. My companion loved the Berkshire Pork Loin, was very moist. While the wine list was very short, the selection was sufficient. Service is still somewhat green. But finally a great new dining destination, for all of us Fox Theater patron's. Maybe just a drink on the famous terrace, facing the Fox. Heck, we don't need to attend a performance at The Fox, to come to Livingston. It's another great addition to the growing restaurant scene in Midtown. Pros: Historical & Hip Dining Room, Creative Menu! Cons: Service Needs To Kick It Up A Notch! more

One of the Best in Atlanta 9/2/2009

I live in San Francisco and travel to Atlanta for business frequently. I am very impressed with the growing food scene and the quality of restaurants that I've encountered. I'm one of the lucky people who still have a decent expense account and can pretty much eat where I want. One Atlanta restaurant in particular shines for me - Livingston Restaurant and Bar. The first impression you have when walking into the bar is the grand scale and beautiful architecture that has been restored in contemporary furnishings and decor that enhance the space giving it a warm and contemporary feel. Their inventive drinks list is first rate and I've tried their signature ""Livingston"" cocktail (more than once) and it's wonderful and refreshing. Pros: Amazing Food and Decor Cons: Too many great dished to choose from more

very average 9/2/2009

Livingston appears to be a nice restaurant and on the surface has the right elements. (e.g. diverse menu, good location, and modern decor). The wine list was very lacking. The entire wine list was one page on a large font. Arugula salad was very good. Red Wine was served cold. (my glass was sweating on a not so hot day). Main course...don't even get me started. I had Gnocchi. First, there was barely any pasta. More cauliflower and white sauce. The gnocchi that was in the dish was about as big as end of my pinky finger and beyond mushy. It was soup with some sort of mush that I would have never known was mushy otherwise. Service was poor. We had to actually get up and ask for a soup spoons. Most of the bread was hard and cold....Cornbread was good. This place has got a lot of work to do. Prices would be fine if food lived up to it. Not the case. Pros: arugula salad Cons: marginal food and wine more
