Nice place but a bit overrated 10/20/2008

It was an ok experience. Nice place, decent service, alright food but everything was just so so. Not the superior service or terrific food I expected, especially for the cost. I wouldn't recommend it and I probably wouldn't go back unless it was for a dinner for someone else. That's not to say anything went wrong while we were there. I just wasn't that impressed. more

Bar none, my favorite restaurant in the bay area 9/21/2007

Excellent food. Excellent service. Great ambience. Great selection (wild meats/wild birds/steak/fish/pasta). Their tasting menus are amazing. It's pricey - but you are getting your money's worth. Pros: The service, the food, everything Cons: It is pricey - but it's not pricey for what you're getting. more

It was good 5/19/2006

Overall dining is recommended. The service staff was polite and dessert was excellent more

Excellent Food, Wine & Service 11/9/2005

I celebrated my birthday there with some friends. Eventhough expensive, I feel it was worth every penny. The tasting menu came with so much food to try & so much fine wine. Wonderful professional service. A great place for a special event. Pros: food, wine, service Cons: price, parking more

Great, but keep in mind ""Proper Attire"" 10/25/2005

Everything was great, value would be average for a nice/good restaurant, two course dinner without drinks for a couple cost about $100. Great for groups, very accomodating. Pros: Food, Service, Wine List Cons: Parking more

Good Food, High Prices 7/18/2004

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Le Papillon. I had the tasting menu; my boyfriend had the Pepper Seared Filet of Beef with Brandy Demi-Glace (my bf loved it) and the soup of the day--curry soup (too strong for me, but my boyfriend enjoyed it). Food-wise, we enjoyed it very much, leaving the restaurant stuffed. Service-wise, we had reservations, but were not seated until 30 minutes later. During out wait, however, we were served bite-sized appetizers, which were quite tasteful. After trying those, I was determined to be patient and wait for our table. The atmosphere is up-scale, and even a bit snobby (""Proper attire required"". Cell phones not allowed), but if you're looking for a place where you can dress up, enjoy good food and good service, then I would definitely recommend Le Papillon. For 2 people, our bill came out to almost $200, including a bottle of champagne. Pros: Good food, Good service more

What can I say? 1/20/2004

Just perfect! I know you have been around a long time, but I never visited until I saw you on citysearch. And was I glad to dine with you. From the presentation to the dessert wine, I was so impressed. My wife and I had a perfect 30th anniversary and I am so glad Le Papillon was there to impress us. Thanks! Pros: Service, Food Presentation, Atmosphere more

Elegant, stuffy but delicious 11/4/2003

The food is excellent. The servers are efficient and professional. The ambience is elegant but too stuffy for us Californians, who want to enjoy the exquisite French cuisine without dressing up. The price is quite steep but we should expect to spend more at an elegant French restaurant. more

A little overpriced and overhyped 10/12/2003

I didn't think the cost of our dinner for two ($250) was worth it. The portions and quality of the food just didn't match the price and left me feeling a little ripped off. The service was straight forward but where we were seated (by the entrance) didn't do much for my impression of the restaurant. I wouldn't ever go back and I wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends. Save your money and go to La Fondue which is a hundred times better! more

Overpriced 9/4/2003

The food was good, but excessively expensive for the quality of the dishes. Wait staff was helpfull and friendly, but somehow didn't quite gel properly. Ambiance was excellent, if a touch stuffy. Dinner was about $200 for 2 including wine and desert, but for the money I'd definately go elsewhere. (If you're taking a client out to dinner though, and you're on an expense account I'd recommend it) Pros: Food, Ambience, Wine List Cons: Price, Price, Price more

Very Nice 8/20/2002

For my birthday I had the tasting menu. The food is very good, the service even better. I would recommend this place for an elegant, classic dining experience. Pros: food, romantic, quiet more

Haute prices, but not cuisine 8/13/2002

We went on Scott Cooper's reputation and ended the night by calling to see whether he had ever been there. Dishes were surprisingly bland and unimaginative -- e.g. beet and goat cheese salad where an overwhipped, insipid white mound lay in the middle, mustard crusted rabbit with only a hint of dijon on a portion of the leg. Service tried but didn't understand that calling us ""my friends"" and removing plates from someone still eating aren't good techniques. At the prices, a horrible value. 28 by Zagats, but based on all the dishes by our 3 people, 22-23 at best. Cons: price more
