I'd take a pass on La Fourna 1/31/2012

The food was ok; my veal was a little fatty. What really ruined the experience was the owner, Al. He was over the top and mistreated both customers and employees. His behavior made our dining experience most uncomfortable. I would skip on La Fourno unless you enjoy a tyrant in action. \r more

Great food and unbelievable service 3/19/2009

I have been to La Fourno a few times now, and each time I have received the most unbelievable service. Most recently we hosted a guest from out of town, and Al who is one of the owners, personally insured that we were well taken care of, which we most certainly were by Francis our server. During my previous visit, I stopped there with friends after a day of exploring the city. Again we were personally attended to by the owner, who actually called the owner of Society Hill Playhouse and arranged for us to see the show that evening! Each time we have been there, the food was plentiful, creative and delicious! This is one of my favorites. Pros: On Tuesdays they have BYOB and 2 for 1 appetizers Cons: Wish it were closer to where I lived! more

Wow what great food! 2/18/2009

I was very surprised but I loved this place - it has amazing food, great service and the atmosphere is very authentic. I can't wait to go back - I always love to experience new cultures and this is like a blast from Italy Pros: Everything Cons: little expensive but not too bad more

A little slice of Italy on South st 12/20/2008

We just went to La Fourno last night and will definitely be back again and again. We were with 2 other families for our traditional visit to Philly for Christmas. There were 11 of us which included 5 children from 8 to 14yrs old. The owner was wonderful with the children. The ambiance, the service and the food were phenomenal. From the veal in the veal parm being so moist, the pasta dishes to die for, the brick oven pizza done to perfection, to the amazing deserts, it was well worth the visit.\r I can't wait to go back! Pros: priced reasonably, delicious food, great service Cons: parking could be an issue more

Best Italian food anywhere!!! Outstanding customer service!!! 9/19/2008

My boyfriend and I recently made a trip to Philly. We followed the great reviews on this site and ate at La Fourno. The reviews couldn't have been more accurate. The meal was fantatstic!! The wait staff was friendly and courteous. They have a dinner special where two can dine for $60. This includes appetizer, main course, dessert, and cofee. We couldn't make up our minds and decided to have the special. It was simply delicious. I had shrimp marsala and my boyfriend had lobster ravioli. They were generous in portions and we couldn't eat everything! The ambience and decor were great too. I can't wait to go back. If you're looking for a place to dine at an affordable place (or not) and want outstanding service and food, this is the place to go. It is defiinately Philly's best kept secret. Pros: Have to say, highly recommend. more

Suprisingly great Italian food on South Street 9/18/2008

I have avoided this place and all others on South Street for yoears and stuck to ""South"" South Philadelphia restaurants for Italian. Big mistake. This place is really really good and still autentic Italian food, (Just like you would get in Rome, Bologna or Florence). The staff is very friendly and the food is great! I have never written a restaurant review before but thought I really should since this is our new favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. Grazie!\r \r more

great service 8/30/2008

can't believe that it took me this long to find it...this place was simply amazing. the service is the best that i have had in the city. they were doing all that they could to make us comfortable while they were waiting, and the wait was not even 10 minutes. the food was amazing and the portions were generous. i will definitely be going there more often. Pros: service, food, prompt seating more

Great all around 7/26/2008

This place is wonderful--the food is amazing, the prices are very reasonable (my DELICIOUS pesto linguini was $8.95 and came with a salad!), and the service is very nice. There's a sign that says that they're byob on Tuesday and Friday nights...I'll definitely be returning for that! Perfect place for family, friends, or a date, I loved it! Pros: Food, service, prices Cons: can't think of any more

Wonderful, authentic Italian food 1/27/2008

I've been here several times and they never fail the impress. The bread is homemade and amazing. From the ravioli to the chicken dishes, everything is amazing. The desserts are wonderful too. I would suggest not going right before a showing of 'Menopause: the musical' which is at the Society Hill Playhouse, if you are not going to the show. They have a discount for ticket holders but we went at 5pm on a Saturday and it was packed! After the large groups of women left, it was much quieter. I'm glad to see they are so busy but the usually romantic atmosphere isn't quite the same when there are several large parties. Will definately go again! more

Choose to eat here before or after the theater! 1/20/2008

Al accomodated our party of twelve before we headed to the theater. He and his wait staff attended to all our dining needs. He also chatted with us about his connection with the theater group, very impressive. I would recommend ordering from the price fix menu for a large party, the choices were delicious and tax and tip are included. The atmosphere was perfect and we had a lovely meal, great conversation and my friends chatted about it all night! Al let us sample this delicious grape/chocolate drink and I put mine in my coffee, yum! We had a fun girls night out and Al and the La Fourno staff just added to a wonderful memory! \r Thanks for everything! more

Great little Italian place, good atmosphere, nice service 12/27/2007

We went there and I was starving, having just undergone a medical procedure to extract pre-blood stem cells in preparation for chemotherapy to treat my cancer. We were the only ones in the joint between the hours of 4 - 5PM. The waiter came by often to refill our waters while giving us all the time we needed to pick. My wife was given two free samples of wine, and she settled on one, which was brought. The food was oustanding, and all the staff there catered to us (since we were the only ones, it being a slack day and time), bussing the table, cleaning it, bringing fresh bread. Doubtlessly had it been more packed we would have had less prompt service, but it still would have been great. I highly recommend this place; the neighbor is great for walking and taxis and buses are plentiful, though no rail lines are close. Pros: ""Mood"" lightging, staff speaks Italian but enough English to communicate, friendly Cons: Could be noisy at full hours; can't say for certain more

It is my favorite Italian restaurant in the city.\r Food is wonderful! Great Staff!
