Mexican, Not American-Mexican 12/9/2008

I have seen a few negative reviews for the food in this place, and I am guessing these reviews came from Americans who are not acquainted with real mexican cuisine. I have dined extensively in mexico, and this is the most authentic Mexican eatery I have come across in the area. Mexican and American-Mexican food are quite different. They were a bit expensive, but the food was fresh and good. Service was a little slow, but it was saturday night and they were packed so I kind of expected that. Guacamole was pretty good and the mole sauce on my chicken was excellent. If you want a deep-fried chimichanga and some nachos, go to Don Pablos. If you want a taste of how Mexicans actually eat, try this place. Pros: Good food, excellent mole sauce Cons: A little pricey, service kinda slow more

Biggest Disappointment 11/24/2008

After all the great things I've heard about La Esperanza over the past couple years, I finally made it there this past weekend. I have to say, I was very dissappointed with the service and my meal. We were greeted right away for our drink order, but then didn't see our drinks for another 10 minutes or so, after we placed our order for food. The food was just okay. Nothing I'd go out of my way for again. The thing that really surprised me was the cost of our bill. I wasn't expecting to pay over $50 for mexican food. If it was really good food or if I was in center city then I wouldn't be complaining. They charged $2.50 for sour cream and tomatoes which doesn't come with the taco dinner my husband ordered. I thought that was standard in mexican restaurants. Pros: ambience was great Cons: food was boring, overpriced. Service was poor more

Good food, good service 5/29/2007

I don't eat out in NJ that often so I can't compare what the other Mexican restaurants in the area are like. Philly has numerous spots I'd recommend over La Esperanza but that's more because of the quality of food in the city than it is a comment on La Esperanza not being good. It's a perfectly fine eatery with a nice clean presentation and good service. The food isn't cheap but it's reasonable, and the quality is pretty good. The menu felt a bit limited to me, I would have liked more options with my burritos, and some hot sauces would have been nice. The guacamole was mediocre but I enjoyed the main course. I would not go out of my way to return to Esperanza but I also wouldn't protest if someone else wanted to take me. Pros: Good food and good service Cons: Not exceptional more

Our food was zesty, fresh... and I was so happy to finally find a place that is not afraid to use pepper! The guacamole was the best I've ever had... the service is friendly and the place cozy. Pros: Delicious, Inexpensive, Variety more
