Pete the manager, took the time to come by our table to ensure our visit was enjoyable. It was very comforting to see a manager show the type of caring and appreciative attitude that this one did. The food, service, and atmosphere was spectacular. I would recommend Kona to anyone. Pros: Sushi more

Friendly Atmosphere, Excellent Food 4/29/2009

I came in with a few friends on a Tuesday for lunch. We sat in the patio area and the scenery was very inviting. The manager Pete was very helpful in describing his picks for sushi as I have never ordered sushi before. I loved the food as did my friends, I will be coming back soon. Pros: Sushi, service. more

disappointed loyal patron 2/24/2008

I was a devoted fan of Kona Grill... recommending it to friends, giving Kona Grill gift cards as gifts and eating there at least once every other month. My favorite entree was always the grilled sea bass. A few months ago, I ordered it and it wasn't as good as usual. A month or two later, I ordered it again, and was again disappointed. A few months have passed and I went there last night, and (shame on me) I ordered it again hoping I had just had bad luck on the last 2 times. Well, it was not edible. The fish smelled bad and tasted very fishy. After dinner was over my eating companion told the waitress about this and our past experiences. She was very nice and apologetic and offered to get me something different or a free drink or something. We declined. We just wanted to let the chef know so that perhaps in the future, they would go back to their original recipe and method. The waitress later came back with the check and said that in the future, we just shouldn't order the sea bass again because it would probably be the same. Pros: great patio seating more

Not my style. 1/20/2008

Service: Very slow at lunchtime--spent over an hour and it took over 15 minutes to get dessert. Cons: Very slow service and a bit pricey. more

Many Tastes 5/30/2007

Ate at Kona Last Friday 05-25, Long line 45 min. We opted to sit in the Patio Bar area(Seat Yourself) Very Nice. Drinks were 5-star Mint Moheto and Bloody Mary Exceptional. The Maui Onion soup Great, 4 entrees,Sea bass Excellent, Pork Tenderloin Great, Thai Noodles Great, Sushi was so so the Salmon was good the albacore Tuna was a poor Tilapia Substitute. Ahi Tuna over Rice was disappointing, the portion was large but the Quality was Poor, they used the lower Lateral line Meat which is usually stringy therefore used in ahi salads after it's stripped. When serving Ahi Steaks use the upper meat. Tastes were Great overall, the desserts (The Macadania nut Pie is Excellent). Suggestion: Monitor your Rare Fish and Raw Fish Quality (Fish Advertised) and use proper cuts (Top or Bottom) better, but I wiil go back. For $190.00 I can be critical. Pros: Nice atmosphere, good flavors, good drinks Cons: Certain Fish, not up to Snuff more

Bad Allergy Experience 1/11/2007

I have an allergy to shellfish and explained that to the server when I ordered. Unfortunately, through their negligence, I was brought food that had been contaminated with shellfish, had an allergic reaction and had to leave immediately. Luckily I avoided a trip to the hospital. Cons: Utter disregard for the well being of their patrons more

New Location in Oakbrook 11/30/2006

My wife and I and two friends of ours went to this new Oakbrook Kona Grill last night. We had reservations for 6:30 pm, when we walked in the restaurant , it was half empty. We noticed a filled bar with patrons and a nice looking bar atmosphere. We were walked to a table and we said we prefered a booth (several were available and no one was in line behind us waiting to sit down). The hostess seemed bothered by our change of she wanted to put us and said, ""Wait here, I need to see what we can do"". This was a bad start -- so after standing there for a couple minutes, we were pointed to one of the many available booths. We ordered appetizers, sushi and steaks. The atmosphere is nice, I would say a 9. The service was just ok, it was very matter of fact -- you could tell this was a chain and not a proudly owned independent restaurant -- service I give a 6. Some high quality chains still go out of their way to treat the customers very well, this was not that type of experience. The sushi was just average maybe a 6, and the food was decent but nothing special at all for the money. We wanted to try this new restaurant and we did. I'd give it a 7 overall. With many 9 or 10's in the area (Mona Mi Gabi, Magnums, Capital Grille, Za Za's, Wildfire, etc...) we'll skip this new place for much better food, service, and similar atmosphere. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Chain type service -- food was decent, nothing special more

Very Good sushi in the burbs 10/23/2006

This new addition to Milwaukee avenue is a treat. The sushi is excellent. The rest of the menu attracts non sushi eaters and they do a decent job with the asian inspired items. They have happy hour drink specials and reduced appetizers that is well worth the trip. Pros: Sushi is very good, other great food options as well Cons: Service is a little slow, during lunch more

Surprising Great Steak! Quick seating 10/22/2006

This restaurant is always a quick seating. The sushi is some of the freshest and best prepared that we've experienced. As business travelers, we appreciate the quick seating, fresh food, and nice staff. Pros: wonderfully tasty food Cons: somewhat limited menu more

Good ambience; average food 9/22/2006

We walked in on a Friday, and were seated within 15 minutes. We liked the restaurant layout and the menu choices looked good (pan asian). We had the signature chicken and thai noodles. The food and the wine turned out just average however and it didn't sit too well with my girlfriend and I, afterwards. Pros: ambience, parking, walk-in's allowed Cons: average food and wine. smallish main menu. more
