Best

If you love Japanese food, this place is great! Try the kim chee or the noodle soups. The sushi was okay, too.

Worst

Good standard Americanized Japanase fare. The buckwheat soba noodles were good, but don't order it with beef. The special Oregon roll was also good. Service was very slow. The...

Passable for a Koji 7/28/2009

This Koji used to be my favorite... then they changed management and the quality went down-hill. Tempura? Don't eat it here, their fryer isn't hot enough so it comes out soggy and greasy. Yuck. The sushi is fine, but this place can get over crowded on weekend evenings... just keep that in mind. Pros: it is in NE Cons: fryer is gross more

Very small chain that keeps a level of consistency, and they know how to cook their Tempura. 9/15/2008

Way better than any Sushi Train type of resteraunt but not your fancy expensive joint. The fish is fresh (at least at the Wiedler location) and service in very genial. If I wanted to spend a third more for atmospere and presentation I would go to Sinju or Masu. If I just want some good Japenese food I will go Koji. more

Just like being at home 7/9/2008

After growing up in Tokyo all my life I find it refreshing to have a place where I feel at home chatting it up with the Japanese staff and mostly authentic food. Thanks guys for making Portland a little closer to home. Pros: oddly authentic for a chain and good prices Cons: sushi is avg to good more

Great Japanese Cuisine! 7/2/2008

Loved the food! Service was very prompt, and they were there to help you with whatever you needed at any time. Hours are very user friendly, and again the food is excellent! more

Average, fast-food style sushi 5/25/2008

This was my second attempt at finding the perfect sushi restaurant in Portland. It was recommended by a friend of mine who likes to eat here for lunch. Koji's has a large variety of menu items and a casual atmosphere. But that's where the good ends for me. The sushi was very mediocre. And that's what I expected from a chain style restaurant. The fish wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't fresh. This is a good place for the casual sushi eater (who prefers rolls) or for someone who wants a quick bite. But if your looking for an authentic, quality Japanese experience this isn't the place. Pros: Variety of menu items, quick and fairly inexpensive Cons: Lacks originality and authentic style, too Americanized more

Offensive waitress will ruin your meal experience 10/23/2007

Okay, if you want to order lots of food, avoid going here. An offensive waitress will tell you that you're ordering too much food several times even when you reconfirm her that you know what you are doing. My husband and I will never go there again. Not only the service is bad, I saw a chef sneezing on the food without covering his mouth. I have never experienced such an offensive behavior. more

Good variety of japanese cuizine 11/5/2006

Great sushi and other selections like box lunches, and rice bowls. The price seems to be average. The place is small and a little cramped but that never bothers me. the staff is friendly and the service is good. Not the best sushi, but not the worst. A good place for lunch!!! Pros: good food close to my office Cons: parking and cramped tables more

Such a disappointment! 9/23/2006

Just moved to NE and figured we would get good food at Koji...wrong. I ordered food to go and got there when she told me to, wrong food, cold food and awful sushi. Wouldn't ever go back. Service was friendly, but that is it....such a disappointment. Hate to waste money on bad food. more

amazing tuna sashimi! 7/10/2006

I went here on the advice of some friends. I went during a Friday afternoon and got seated promptly. I had some of the best tuna sashimi I've had in a long time. The tuna was glistening and just melted in my mouth. I also was excited to find another of my favorite dishes, cold soba noodles--so refreshing on a hot day. The Unagi I had was also excellent too. I can't wait to go back and try the ramen noodles with miso and more sashimi. Pros: Amazing tuna sashimi and cold soba noodles. Cons: Can't think of any. more

Good Sashimi 4/6/2006

The spider roll is an interesting adventure but I always focus on the sashimi when I go to Koji. I have not had fresher tuna anywhere. I didn't try a lot of the cooked food, but people were eating it. The tempura was OK, but the overall odor of the cooking oil does not mesh well with the sushi and sashimi. That said, I will go back. Maybe they will have a new kitchen fan by then. Pros: sushi, sashimi, tea Cons: cooking oil smell, parking, ambience more

A place you want to frequent regularly 3/7/2006

An up-to-date review for Koji Osakaya is desperately needed despite the harsh remarks made previously. It wasn't more than 2 monthes since my first visit to this joint, and I have still enjoyed my many visits to Koji. The lunch combo's are delicately made and, at the same time, at an affordable cost. The overall taste of its ""cooked menu"" is much above standards in Portland, whilst the Katsu-Pork Curry Rice brings back vivid memories of popular diner joints in metropolitan Tokyo. The ""raw menu"" isn't yet something to die for. It hovers slightly above mediocre. Nevertheless, there isn't much else to pick on. Enjoy. Pros: Good Service, Speedy, Inexpensive more

possibly the worst Japanese food I've ever eaten 10/28/2005

Food was simply terrible. service was average. Maybe I've eaten at too many excellent Japanese and sushi restaurants in my career, but this was absolutely horrid. Miniscule rubbery sashimi, overcooked shoe-leather steak, mushy vegetable tempura, stale (to the point of being brown) avocado in the Cali roll. What a shame. Cons: food more

What I've been looking for.. 9/17/2005

My girlfriend and I have been trying out different Sushi places in the Portland area lately and Koji Osakaya is the best we've found. Service is always great! I have a feeling people leaving negative reviews about this restaraunt would be negatively reviewed as customers if that was a practice. The food is also just great. I always end up leaving stuff and quite satisfied with the quality. Thier combination plates are fantastic. Pros: Great service, Great Food, Nice Atmospere Cons: Gresham more

Where is the service 6/11/2005

We love the food here...the service is horrible. We left one time after waiting 15 minutes just to get a menu. The sushi is fresh and creative though. The waitress forgot to order my boyfriend's noodles and didn't even take it off the bill. I would avoid this place unless you live near by and have a long time to wait. Pros: good sushi Cons: bad service more

Good sushi in close quarters 7/28/2003

We recently made a trip to Koji for some sushi. The variety is quite extensive--we ended up ordering Tamago, California Rolls, Bagel Maki, and Red Snapper sushi. I've definately had better tamago....the egg was very bland. The California rolls made up for this, as they were quite tasty. For two people with sodas, we paid $18. Not too bad for an evening of sushi. The service was a bit unorganized--we had three different waitresses trying to help us. Parking was also quite difficult. Pros: Good sushi, Selection, Price Cons: Bad Parking, Close quarters, Service more

Standard - average 5/21/2003

Good standard Americanized Japanase fare. The buckwheat soba noodles were good, but don't order it with beef. The special Oregon roll was also good. Service was very slow. There are certainly better options for Japenese food. more

great fish! 9/24/2002

very tasty and FAST! i have been there several times and the service and food is very consistant Pros: fast, great variety more

yummy 8/20/2002

great selection from a long menu, for both sushi and ""cooked"" food...great bar and drinks...good portions at a reasonable price with quality service. its good food, not fast food ;) Pros: great mixed drinks, easy access Cons: popular more

We Like it 8/6/2002

I am glad that you will never go there again.. It leaves more room for me. The seats are a little close, but the high ceilings open it up. I have never had bad service or bad sushi there. I REALLY like their salad dressing. We always get parking right in front too. more
