Kirschbaum's Bakery

Found this bakery when moved to the burbs a few years back. Love the donuts, coffee cakes, and smiley cookies. I would say that this is one of the best old style bakeries in chicagoland. I grew up on Webers and stil might be partial to them but overall Kirschbaum's is very good and I would definitely recommend a stop, even just to check out of the baked goods and grab a cookie or two. more

I grew up on Kirschbaums sugar cookies and coffeecake. They're both amazing. When I'm back in the area I try to stop by. During the holidays they have wonderful cookies. Better order early though, they'll sell out more

I called into Kirschbaums because I needed a cake for my wife's birthday that evening. I was advised by a friend to go elsewhere, but my time was limited and Kirschbaums was in the neighborhood. What a mistake. \r \r Everything went fine with the order as they told me they had a white cake available. I came in right off the train and was greeted by two helpful teens behind the counter. My wife?s name was put on the cake and I brought it home. \r \r We had a nice meal and the children dressed the cake in lit candles and with lights softened we sang our birthday wishes. That was the end of the smiles. The cake was dry as a bone. Even with passable amounts of frosting in the forkful, the dryness of the cake overwhelmed. \r \r The next day I advised the manager of the problem by phone. In a rather curt manner, I was told that I would need to bring in the cake and it would be sampled by the staff to determine if there was indeed a problem. There is nothing like a fresh coffeecake from Kirschbaum's and a hot pot of coffee on a Saturday morning, along with the Chicago Tribune of course. But if I do too many of those, I'll have to start exercising more. So I do try and have some restraint! But their coffeecakes, in many many varieties, are first class. They also have great desserts for that special party. Their bread, on the other hand, is unimpressive compared to artisan bakeries. Perhaps it's the elusive wood burning ovens those higher end places have! But if you're willing to get your bread elsewhere, you'll be thrilled with the coffeecakes and desserts they produce here. more
