I wanted to try this place because I read some decent reviews. Upon first arrival, I peered through the windows and saw nobody. Took a seat at the sushi bar and was greeted nicely...

Bad review not possible! 1/28/2010

I was just surprised about some of the negative reviews on here so I decided to leave one of my own. I am a frequent customer going here (mainly for the sushi) about once a month. I never have had a problem with service or have been denied anything I asked for. The sushi chef is very personable and yes he does talk a lot; he is just trying to lighten up the mood and is very care free. The sushi is wonderful and is made right in front of you. The sushi chef will answer any of your questions about sushi and also always has great suggestions. I love going here because I can definitely fill myself with a friend for about 50 bucks. The quality is definitely worth a try and you should go into this place with an open mind because it's an experience that will keep you coming back. If you like sushi, have a seat right at the sushi bar and enjoy freshly prepared food. I recommend the spicy scallop roll or crunchy tuna roll. Pros: great sushi, service, personable, price Cons: decor more

Best traditional home-cooked comfort food 9/26/2008

My wife lived in Japan almost 3 years, I have traveled throughout Japan for extended periods over 16 times in 12+ years. Doing business, having a best friend and living with his family, doing home stays, and with a brother and and sister-in-law living there... and HERE is where we go for everyday, ordinary food done correctly and priced fairly. Akai Hana (Rest Japan) does have a good bento, but its expen$ive for what you should pay. Service is weak, I grant that. Those that have spent a good amount of time in Japan and yearnng for a katsu-don or noodle bowl fix - go here. Reservations are easily made, they don't advertise much at all, so rarely crowded. Elitists won't like it - they should go to asian-fusion restaurants like Haiku or pay big money to feel good about their food and atmosphere at Akai Hana. Out to impress friends, don't come. Want to eat like everyday an salaryman and his family in Japan? Come here now! Pros: Fair Prices, Comfort food done right, easy to get in on Sat Night, above average sushi Cons: Slow Service, and YES on the advice don't bring a date and sit at the Sushi Bar, sit in dining area more

Great sushi chef, fresh food 7/14/2007

Hidden Gem. The chef is friendly and willing to accomodate any request - plus he always has some of his own! I have never been dissappointed. Frequent specials in addition to wide assortment or fresh cuts of fish. Pros: Sushi chef, selection Cons: Could use a scrub. more

If you love Japanese, Don't Bother! 2/21/2007

I wanted to try this place because I read some decent reviews. Upon first arrival, I peered through the windows and saw nobody. Took a seat at the sushi bar and was greeted nicely by the sushi chef. The waitresses were not all that pleasant. I ordered the sashimi appetizer, tofu with dried bonito flakes and scallions, a salmon skin roll, and grilled makerel. The fish was fresh and was served with julienned turnip and a perilla leaf, which is nice touch, as many restaurants opt out on that. The tofu, on the other hand, was not correct. They served this dish with firm tofu instead of the silky tofu. So, the texture was was mealy with the bonito flakes, eehh! For the salmon skin roll, I prefer not using smoked salmon as grilling it will give an overpowering flavor. The grilled makerel was slightly on the salty side, but overall was okay. If you want to talk about food, the menu items are obviously for American tastes. Later, I found out that the sushi chef was not even Japanese! And he talks a lot. If you want authentic, you should try Yoshi's. Pros: Parking Cons: Food, unpleasant waitresses more

don't waste your time or money here 3/2/2006

I asked if I could also get a tempura California roll, but they wouldn't do it which I thought was odd. The waitress was hesitant to let me order an avocado and cucumber roll bc it's not on the menu. The A and C roll were up to par with store bought sushi that's been sitting out all day. The center of the roll had very little a and c and was mostly rice!! Their rainbow roll is okay. They're overpriced considering the quality. Like one of the reviews below said, the sushi chef is a talker. I did not sit at the sushi bar, but from our table I could hear him loud and clear. They are very slow with the check too!! Pros: no wait, clean, friendly staff Cons: quality, decor more

Great place! 2/16/2006

I LOVE the place! I know the old owner, the new owner, the sushi chef, and some of the seasoned waitress. They have Korean food on the menu since the current owner, Dee Dee is Korean. Great place, good price, great food! However, the bill can be high. It can be easily $80 for 2 people, but it is sure worth it. They do have rooms for large group of people if you made reservation ahead of time. Pros: Great sushi more

Wait Staff 10/19/2005

I have only been to Kikyo for the sushi, really no need to try anything else. The sushi chef will talk you ear off so don't bring a date there he could embarass you. The wait staff is a little slow with the check but the food is so amazing and the sushi chef knows what he is doing. Go as much as possible, trust me!!!! Pros: Sushi, Clean, Friendly Cons: Slow more

Absolutely Recommended !!! 9/6/2003

I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to any Japanese food lovers. The menu and the sushi are fresh and good. If you dont know what to order or confused, you can certainly order from many of its combination lunch and dinner boxes. They serve generously in terms of portion. Pros: reasonably priced, good parking, fast more

Best Kept Japanese Secret in Columbus 10/3/2002

My wife and I have now visited Kikyo over 20 times. After eating many times at the other Columbus sushi restaurants we rarley venture out now that we have found Kikyo. Their hostess is one of the friendliest restaurant employees I have ever met (Renny). She always goes out of her way to ensure you are happy with the service and food and willing to bend over backwards to make sure every visit is as good as the first. Food is excellent! Here are my tips: Try Chow Shoo Main (traiditional Japanese noodle soup) or the baked calimari or the fish dishes baked with salt (excellent with Sopparo!). Sushi is predictably excellent each time. Very Authentic, sushi is reasonably priced, generous sized pieces and very fresh! Pros: Excellent Hostess, Great Japanese menu, Awesome Sushi more

Very good 8/7/2002

THe first time I went here I contacted the owner and told them my girlfriend was vegetarian. THey went out of their way to find things that she could have. The atmosphere in the restaurant is great. The prices are not bad either. I would say it and Otani are the best in Columbus. Pros: helpful, value, taste more

Take it from a former employee 7/1/2002

Kikyo is the best of the traditional Japanese restaurants in Columbus. I feel that a lot of the new crop of Japanese restaurants in town gear themselves for the ""cool"" factor rather than the style and presentation that makes the food so special. If you had a Japanese Uncle to make you food this is what you'd get. If you go please ask for the special appetizer menu- it's ""subtitled"" but with your servers help you can get some fantastic food. Try the Hokke and the buttersauce scallops- just trust me. Also they just added a new part of the regular menu to include new combos of old favorites. I haven't worked for them in 2 years but I try to go as often as a twenty-something can. They did change Sushi chefs this year, but the sushi is still very good and fresh for this part of the world. Pros: Private rooms-groups, Exotic menu choices, Comfort Food Cons: slow serv w/ busy more
