Unpretentious 3/4/2011

Nice dive bar in the center of posh old city fakery. An oasis from the Jersey douchebag types. more

Uncool place 1/8/2009

This bar was possibly one of the WORSE bars I have been to in a long time. The bartender (who thought he was some cool guy) took a 20 from me and gave me change back for a 10 then told me I was lying. Laughed at my friend who asked for a wine spritzer because apparently people don't drink those? - We are definite rock fans and the actual "Bar" has potential to be fun-if they got rid of the dorks that work behind the counter. Um, weezer called, they want their look back. Pros: potential to be fun Cons: bartenders more

Great bar. 9/17/2008

This bar is a great bar. When I went there , there was not a lot of people there but it was still fun. Gram and Jason were two of the nicest people that I have met. I was there from Ohio and we have nothing like that there. Thanks for the great time. :) more

Best place to be on a Sunday night! 7/13/2007

All i gotta say....$10 all you can drink...great mix of people, music and a you dont have to dress to the 9's. Pros: Sunday Nights more

I wish they didnt get bands i liked cause I hate this place 12/4/2006

The staff is mostly rude fat dudes with bad tatoos, and even worse hygeine. The prices are fair and even cheap for some stuff, I went on a wens day and they had djs upstairs, they played good music, but were terrible at djng, The bar tenders upstairs were nicer then down, and the crowd is hipster to the extreme, but not the hipsters that look good, the hipsters that are too cool to realize that if your a fat girl ironic retro 80's tight clothes isnt the bnest way to go. And the dudes weere mostly corny art school dropouts. I also went on a sunday for the open bar, 10 buck gets you serverd all night. The dj on sundays seemed like he had no idea what he was doing, and no idea that the kids there had better taste in music then Nelly, seriously Nelly? There was several times during his set that the music stopped for like 10 seconds, and he played some of the most generic boring hip hop and rock ever. But this place gets great bands all the time I saw the nine black alps at their first show in the US, which was awesome and sad at the same time, they rocked b ut hardly anyone was there to see them and when they got on hardly anyone got off thiert stools and venture into the other room to watch a great band rock out, they were too cool to realize that this band is gonna be big if people pay attention. I went to see a couple bigger band and the shows were terribly over sold which made it so over crowded that it seemed dangerous to be in the place, I saw sebadoh which is one of my favorite bands from my teenage years, but had to leave cause it was ridiculously over-packed (shame on your promoters) I will go back if their is a band that I want to see as long as its not someone that I know it will be packed for, because they will overpack the place. And the staff there is very rude, and deserves to be smaked around a little. Pros: Great live bands, cheap specials, somewhat cool crowds Cons: awful staff, overly packed on big nights, one bathroom more

Cool venue, rude bartenders 10/25/2006

I was in town for busines and I stopped in on a wednesday night. I was hoping to have a good beer and see some live music. The old style wooden bar is cool. They have around twelve taps of GOOD micro brews, most of which is local. After I ordered a beer, I asked the bartender if I could get a receipt. " A receipt!!!!??????". He gave me a demeaning stare. I then told him that I get reimbursed. "What, do you work here?" was the reply. I told him to forget about it. He then threw in one more comment (in a rude tone) that he had no way of generating a receipt. Well, the register did have a receipt roll loaded. Hand written would have been fine. Needless to say, he did not have to be so rude over a simple question. I drank my beer, stiffed the guy, and left. I did not feel very welcome there. Too bad, I was in the mood for some music. more

What an experience! 8/15/2006

1st time at the Khyber 2nd live show. I was there with good friends and the had great bands. It was a dark, gritty atmosphere with a good alcohol selection and great fans of music. Stop in if you wanna see a good show. Pros: Atmosphere, Music, Drinks Cons: Service [not everyone] more

Rock Perfection. 11/22/2005

The Khyber is easily the best rock bar in Philadelphia, and one of my personal favorites in the entire country. Laid back, unassumingly hip and inexpensive, this bar will quickly become your favorite hang. Every time I go there I feel like I found something secret and perfect. Pros: Great Music, Inexpensive, Not Snobby Cons: Smokey more

User review 10/2/2005

Don't expect glitz here. It's a pretty standard, small rock club. I enjoy listening to new music, but sometimes the collection is a bit mixed. Then again, it's probably not easy to try to get three bands that appeal to the same audience. My biggest complaint is the set time. The bands' barely get to play before being pulled off stage. I noticed this first when seeing a band I knew, but it seemed most of the bands get too short of sets. Pros: no attitude, good beer Cons: short music sets more

Ahh, The Khyber 6/3/2003

The doorman here is hot. It's worth going to The Khyber just to go through the door. Pros: doorman, beer, live music Cons: almost too crowded more

Great Place, Great Bands 2/4/2003

What a venue. The Getaway People, Brendan Benson & Army of Me are some on the bands that played at the Khyber. Great sound and great selection of beer. more

Live rock lives at Khyber 12/18/2002

No other way to put it: The Khyber is the best venue in Philly for catching new local bands and outstanding indie acts. Super beer selection, affordable whiskey, and a very tight, sweaty, and smoky room to see the night's act. In short -- EXACTLY what a rock club should be. Pros: Great beer, Great prices, Great Music Cons: Hard to get in @times more

hip crowd, cool music 9/10/2002

walking into khyber is like walking into a time warp where guys have longer hair than their female friends and music is more important than a well-made cocktail. every night of the week, khyber is packed with john lennon look-alikes, squeezing in to hear the latest local bands. don't go to this bar looking for a date or a tasty martini; that's what continental is for. go to throw back a couple of obscure import beers and listen to the moody and ecclectic bands. Pros: hip, fun, great music Cons: crowded, drinks not that great, expensive more

Nasty 8/8/2002

While I am all for dark and dingy the Khyber sucked. Even the band who was pretty good couldn't make up for the ill tempered crowd. I watched some girl sit down and swipe my smokes while I was listening to the music. It seemed like everyone else forgot how to smile. Also, one bartender charged a higher price for a beer then the other. Pros: I love dark and dingy, The music was good Cons: Nasty Crowd, Cover not woth it more
