One of the best 10 restaurants on the Peninsula; #1 for sush 11/19/2008

I think this place might be closed for lunch now, which is a bummer. Great sushi, very cool atmosphere. Pros: Incredible sushi Cons: No take-out; no lunch (?) more

excellent experience 4/2/2006

We had a great meal at this tiny restaurant. Excellent service all around. Such high quality fish and watching the sushi chef work was brilliant - he's a total pro. Fabulous sake list, recommend ""Kura no Hana"" Daiginjo. It is expensive, no way around that, but if you have the cash and the desire for the best sushi, beautifully presented, there is nothing else on the SF Peninsula that begins to compare. Easy parking is a plus. Recommend you make a reservation, even for 2 people. Pros: quality, freshness, interesting dishes Cons: smallish portions, big money more

Still the best sushi 3/12/2006

I agree that the service there is not too good. They know they are the best in the area, and they don't think we are customers. They are sort of ""Sushi-Nazis."" I came in early and ordered sushi but even before I complete my sentence, they told me to wait. It was them who did not prepare to serve on time. But again, their sushi is so good. Pros: sushi, location Cons: price, service more

Rude within 10 seconds of entering! 1/29/2006

My husband and I are new to the area heard about the good food... So we walk in to inquire about take out and the ""welcome"" woman just rudely turned away saying, ""We don't do take out."" Well, we don't do dine in after that. Cons: Rudeness, Expensive more

Major Disappointment - BAD SERVICE 12/1/2005

The hostess was very rude when we asked for a table for 5. She stated she didn't have space, but the restuarant was empty! When we insisted, she sighed and said she'd set up a table for us. When there aren't any tables under reservations, there is no reason not to seat a party and complain about setting up a table! The food was decent but not worth the inflated prices. It was expensive because you could get the same quality sushi from Kaygetsu at nearly half the price elsewhere. Throughout the meal the hostess was staring at us and we found it extremely distracting and just rude. After paying the bill we asked the waitress why the hostess was so rude, the waitress said the hostess was the owner! We will never return to Kaygetsu with a rude owner, fair quality and tasting food at rip-off prices!!! Pros: decent food Cons: Expensive, Rude owner!, small restaurant more

More than sushi 11/12/2005

What most Americans fail to realize is that Japanese cuisine is more than simply ""sushi"". Kaygetsu does more than sushi. And what it does is spectacular, both in visual design and flavor. A recent birthday kaiseki menu consisted of several wonderful dishes, expertly prepared. For example, grilled Sawara amd Kampachi were tender, and served in a beautiful ceder wrap with fried potato and soba noodles. Another standout was the Saki zuke, a seafood salad with snapper, scallop, crisp vegetables and delectable mushrooms in a wonderful soy dressing. With superior and attentive service, Kaygetsu is an excellent addition to the Peninsula restaurant scene. Pros: Food, Service, kaiseki menu more
