Best

You're not getting charged extra for over the top decoration or or presentation. Just good honest sushi. Sit at the bar if you can, super friendly peeps. This is a spot that local...

Worst

I ate here about 2 or 3 times, usually only because it was the closest thing and we couldn't think of anything else. It has always been bland, unremarkable food, served by unpleas...

Great selection and wonderful food. 6/17/2006

I am a local and frequently visit Kappaya. I have been visiting this location since it was the Ichidai sushi house. The staff is friendly and the sushi artists are knowledgable. One of the best places for curry I have found. No Mom, it's not too spicy. I recommend this restaurant to anyone. more

Great Sushi, Great Price 2/5/2006

We started with the miso soup and the tempura veggie appetizer. Both were outstanding. We ordered six different sushi rolls. The fish was very fresh all of the sushi was amazingly delicious. The waitresses were fast and very courteous. The restaurant was clean. If you want great sushi for a great price you'll like this place. Pros: Inexpensive, Clean, Delicious more

one of the better sushi places in pdx 2/3/2005

excellent sushi. the sashimi salmon was some of the best i've ever had. we sat down right away 8pm on saturday. prices were very reasonable too... definitely going here again Pros: parking, not crowded, high quality Cons: none of note more

YUM! 1/28/2005

Kappaya is my favorite sushi in town. I've tried them all. Kappaya is consistently excellent and service is above average. The salmon nigiri is so fresh it practically melts in your mouth. The rolls are amazing and made with care. Teri is the best chef and he takes pride in his work. I recommend the Oregon roll and the Philly roll (not dry like other places). Pros: fresh fish, prompt seating, friendly service Cons: can be crowded, weird hours more

Consistant 1/29/2003

Hard to believe folks had a bad meal here. In our lengthy experience here, we have always been treated with utmost courtesy and the food is great. We are not employees of Kappaya, contrary to that silly post on this list. Fact. Kappaya is firmly established as one of the more consistant establishments in town. We eat sushi frequently and try to eat at them all, but always gravitate back to Kappaya or Murata. Granted, Kappaya has little atmosphere, but that doesn't detract from the ALWAYS fantastic hamachi and salmon. I find the absence of ""gimmick"" rolls to be refreshing. Terry sticks to the basics and does a fine job without the frills. Prices are very reasonable. We've never had a bad meal, unlike our experience at many of the higher rated places on this list. If you seek fresh, friendly, unpretentious fare, try Kappaya. more

Yum! 11/16/2002

We love Kappaya...it's definitely one of the best places for sushi in Portland. Owner and chef Terry is personable, makes great food, and makes this a dining pleasure. Chefs Mario and Jason are also fantastic. This is consistently good sushi and these are great people to know! Pros: Great chefs, Friendly, Interesting rolls more

Yay for Kappaya! 11/1/2002

Moving to Portland was a big ordeal. Finding good sushi was even bigger. My wife and I have been to probably every sushi bar in a 20 mile radius. Kappaya is our favorite. The best fish is right there. Period. If you're looking for a quiet, romantic place, this might not be it -- but if you're serious about great cuts of sushi (and wonderfully nice chefs/help) then check out Kappaya. Pros: BEST sushi in PDX, nicest service more

Good Entrees 8/6/2002

Kappaya is a great little neighborhood restaurant, if you know what to order. I've been to Japan and the sushi is not good at Kappaya, it's uninpired and the sushi-su is not seasoned correctly. The presentation is appalling. However, if you're in the mood for broiled salmon or udon, you won't find a better value anywhere in town. The salmon is consistently good. Donburi and soba are also good bets, but stay away from the tempura, which seems to be cooked in some inferior oil or shortening which gives it a cloying crisco-ee taste. The service is fine, and if desserts are available (which they often aren't) they're worth a try. Pros: good salmon, good udon, good donburi Cons: bad sushi, bad tempura more
