Best

We go here regularly, every week if we can, because the sushi bar is fantastic. It's the best sushi and sashimi I have ever tasted. We used to go to Kuki, where the sushi is goo...

Worst

I've been to this location at least three times for business meetings. At both times, staff does not acknowledge you, orders were taken incorrectly (you got fish instead of steak)...

Call ahead on weekends and still expect to wait! Its still worth it though! 4/15/2007

Can't really go wrong with hibachi, Kanki's food is fresh and delicious. Long wait to be seated because its in the middle of Chapel Hill and Durham and everyone seems to head there for birthdays and fun special occasion dinners. Price is decent, you get a lot of food but there isnt that much variety. Just a bunch of meat combos. Sushi is good here, but if that's what youre really desiring, go to a place that doesnt concern itself with feeding the masses. Pros: Lots of food, sake bombs Cons: Crowded, sometimes slow service more

*Fantastic* sushi 12/14/2006

We go here regularly, every week if we can, because the sushi bar is fantastic. It's the best sushi and sashimi I have ever tasted. We used to go to Kuki, where the sushi is good, but this is better. It is fresh, tasty, imaginative, pleasing to the eye. The service is usually very good -- unfussy and speedy. The sushi bar is just one corner in the bigger restaurant, and there is also a large Japanese steak house area. We like to sit in the sushi bar area, but have also sat in other areas and eaten sushi while our kids have eaten off the main menu. In short, though, it is an excellent sushi place. I particularly recommend ""Kanki by the sea"" and the Banzai rolls. Pros: Fabulous sushi, good place for variety too, with steakhouse and other things on the menu. Cons: Sushi bar is a bit small, but you can sit elsewhere and still order from the sushi menu. more

Perhaps the world's best sushi 7/13/2004

Ive eaten at Morimotos in Philadelphia, Nobus in Tokyo, Iso in New York, Yoshinos in Miami, and countless other restaurants in America and Japan. That said I am proud to call NC my home because of Kanki. I can honestly say that the sushi served at Kankis Durham location by Chiba and Masa is among the worlds best. Kanki, Japanese for great joy, serves some of the freshest sushi in the US and features an atmosphere that is dynamic yet relaxing. While the Hibachi served there is not as authentic as the sushi, dont let that stop you from discovering this gem among sushiya. Try the Mixed Sunomono with fresh octopus, salmon, crab, and shrimp, over seaweed salad. The grilled chicken yakitori is great for kids. Another favorite is the mackerel nigiri. But of course, no trip to Kanki is complete without the Ice Cream Mochi. Enjoy! Itadakimasu! Pros: Fresh,Authentic Sushi, Reasonable Prices more

Excellent 6/1/2004

Been eating sushi for 20 years, California, Florida, New York, San Francisco. Yamato's in Pensacola, Fla has the best sushi and the other Japanese food. Kanki is excellent, especially the Crabtree Valley Mall location. Sushi is served in large portions and it is cold and fresh. It is much better than any other location ... Shabashabu on WF Road is also pretty good, have a sake-bomb while you're there. They are quite creative! Pros: no skimping, authentic, large Cons: , parking, busy more

Miss it 5/28/2003

I've been to this location at least three times for business meetings. At both times, staff does not acknowledge you, orders were taken incorrectly (you got fish instead of steak), and refills don't come timely. Staff was difficult to understand and meat was not cooked to request. At our last visit, our chef accidentally throw food at guest and had the wrong order taken for six out of ten guest. When we asked for the manager (three times) she offered no apologies stated our chef is one of the best and had been there for more than 5yrs, and she reluctantly gave five dollars off our meal-we were still charged for a required gratuity tip for terrible service. Our company now goes to Kanki at the mall-much better service at crabtree mall. Pros: resonable food cost, Large food portions Cons: Rude manager, chefs will ignore you, slow service more

japanese? 2/16/2003

a lot of the food here doesn't seem very japanese or very interesting at all. rice with butter and fried, unseasoned chicken and vegetables are pretty simplistic. more

Cool place! 7/18/2002

I love this place! The sushi is the best I've ever had; and I've eaten at most of the area sushi bars; however, what really sets this place apart from the rest is the fantastic and warm staff. They really make me feel at home and are very attentive. Pros: great staff, good portions, creative chefs Cons: location hard to find more

I love this place! 7/11/2002

Great Sushi and Great Service! WE love this place!! One of the best sushi places in Raleigh! Pros: service, food, quick seating at bar more
