Not fine dining..... 1/3/2009

After reading the mixed reviews and being a newcomer to the area, my family decided to try Joey T's. BAD decision! While the server (Chery) was very nice, the food was poor.....veggies cold, steak had to be sent back..ordered medium-well, got medium RARE at room temperature. Good news....We had reservations for 5:30 pm and were seated right away. BAD news...it took 2.5 hours to get the entree's with much apologies about the kitchen being ""backed up"". The pricing is a bit high for what we received and I would not consider this as a ""fine-dining"" establishment. We will try it one more time to be fair but initial impression is disappointing :( more

Great Food, Great Service... 12/27/2008

Hadn't been here in a few months, so was a little wary due to the recent reviews, but have to say our experience was wonderful (as it was a few months ago). Almost everyone in our party had the Garlic Encrusted Prime Rib and not only was it fabulous, but all were cooked to perfection. Our server, Cheryl, was great...very attentive, but not overly part of our dining experience. Very good service, but not obvious about it. \r \r I don't really care what the other patrons look like (as long as they're well behaved) and I didn't check out the bus boys shoe laces (or lack thereof), but I did note that he was very polite. \r \r I'm more concerned with how the food and servce is...Bottom line, great food, great service. Looking forward to returning, but won't wait 3 months until the next time.\r \r **By the way, we had 8:15 reservations and had a nice leisurely meal. Ended up we were the last ones out of the restaurant side and never did we feel rushed...very important in my opinion. We sometimes are late diners and have experienced wait staff at other places that tend to ""hover"" when it's close to closing time...not so here.\r \r more

Not the place it use to be....so so bad now. 11/8/2008

Wow-what a fall from grace. This was once thee place to go in woodstock...now it is depressing, disappointing and drab. First off-I'm not one for a dress code, but when you walk in and see a mom and dad, dressed nice and then they have their son with them wearying baggy pants, butt showing, baseball hat turned backwards, that is a turn off. Lack of respect. But that is what Joey T's attracts now. Then you look at the bus boys who seem to not care what they look like, wearing no shoe laces. A far cry from a respectable establishment. \r Food-horrible-Wife had lemon chicken that was paper thin and looked like it had been sitting for a few hrs. I was turned off as soon as i walked in so i had the soup and salad. Salad was okay if you like brown lettuce .The onion soup was a thick gravy mixture that was loaded with salt. Too bad Joey T-you really went down hill fast Cons: depressing decor more

Outstanding Experience in Fine Dining 10/26/2008

My husband took me out for a special dinner and special it was. We asked for a quiet table and were ushered into a room with only 4 tables - a pleasant change from the noisy atmosphere in so many other places. Our server was attentive and pleasant. I enjoyed a well-made martini with hand packed bleu cheese olives. Our appetizer of Artichoke Fritters was excellent and something out of the ordinary - definitely freshly made. I had the side salad with one of the house dressings - just right. The Prime Rib was generous and delicious. The accompanying vegetables were fresh and steamed just right. I asked for a side of tortellini rather than the spagetti, mostaccioli, rice or garlic potatoes offered as a side, and they were wonderful, with a very good home-made marinara. A delightful change from the customary baked potato and one more culinary detail making the experience an Italian one. There was more food than I could eat. With no room for dessert but still wanting a sweet finish, I ordered a drink - Lemoncello. What an absolute delight! It reminded me of a fresh made Italian Ice I enjoyed on a trip to Italy years ago.\r \r The atmosphere is exquisite and I can't wait to go back when we can enjoy the grounds a bit more. The terrace and gardens adjoin a bridge that crosses the river - a most romantic and exotic ambiance that made a walk around in the brisk autumn wind absolutely essential.\r \r Joey T's is listed as an ""Italian Steakhouse"" and that is exactly what it is. Yes, it is a more up-scale menu, but worth every penny and not at all over-priced for the experience.\r Pros: Excellent food, atmosphere and service more

Gone way downhill over the years 10/21/2008

Joey T.'s used to be my fiancee' and my favorite place for special occasions. We've been going ther for about 6 years. At first, the food was Excellent! Never a disappointing meal. However, we've noticed the quality going downhill. The quality of the meat used to be great, now, it's very disappointing. Someone earlier made the beer glass comment. I agree, especially when I ordered a Weiss beer, which should not be served in a MGD Nascar glass! Tacky. \r \r And, the ""famous"" French onion soup. Oh my god, my mouth used to water just thinking about this stuff. Now, something has changed, and, it reminds me of the stuff at my work's cafeteria! \r \r Really sad. We may give it one last chance...maybe...but so far 3 trips in a row we've been disappointed. Our friends have made the same comments, and they've already given up. \r \r And yes, the manager is rude. more

Great place. 10/13/2008

Excellently prepared meals. Lunches are especially reasonable ($10-12) for gourmet meals (including salad). Always very good service. Highly recommended. Pros: Quality of meals; great value; very pleasant outdoor seating on the river. Cons: A little dated looking on the inside but still very pleasant. more

Never Again! 10/5/2008

HORRIBLE!!! My husband and I decided to try Joey T's after reading it was a fine dining establishment and decent reveiws. First of all this place should not be labeled a fine dining restaurant. There were cobwebs above our table and a pesky fly and gnat that wouldn't leave our table. The decor is outdated and the smell throughout the place is stale. The glasses we were given our drinks in had beer logos on them as if we were in some sports bar. We waited at least 20 minutes to get our drinks. They screwed up our steak not once but twice without any sort of apology or compassion. The manager when we voiced our complaints walked away and said sorry with her back turned. Never have I been treated so rudely at an restaurant. McDonalds at least gets my order right the first time! Cons: unprofessional management more

The magical shrinking leftovers! 7/20/2008

OK.....love the place on the whole. Wish they had a dress code for the dining room however. We were seated next to a foursome that was dressed in ...I kid you not....swim trunks and tank tops. One gentleman must have weighed 300 lbs and was hardly covered by his clothing. Seems like they should have seated them outdoors or at the bar. \r Our server was very nice. Service was fast, and the food was as usual...excellent. BUT...I could not finish my well prepared prime rib(odered med. rare and it was spot on) The garlic mashed potatoes are a good side dish to the meat entrees. I let the bus boy take my plate back to be boxed up, and my husbands as well.(he did not have as much left over as I did...but we both had veggies left on the plate) When we got home and I opened the brown bag to put the leftovers into the fridge, my prime rib had shrunk!! It was cut down to fit the tiny container and the veggies were nowhere to be seen! I assumed that I would be bringing home the food I paid for, and I was wrong. I almost am afraid that I was given the WRONG leftovers! MY hunk o meat was about the same size as hubby's was, and nowhere near the size of the piece I sent to be boxed. Very disappointed. Pros: Nice location by McHenry's riverwalk Cons: Someone cheated me on my leftovers!! more

Wonderful Place for a Great Evening 6/20/2008

My girlfriend and I have visited Joey T's a number of times. It's a convenient half-way place for us to meet midweek for drinks or dinner, she being from Lake Geneva and me from Crystal Lake.\r \r First, it?s in a very nice setting at the end of North Riverside Driver. The rustic, mansion-looking building is surrounded by beautiful grounds right along McHenry's new harbor walk -- perfect for a romantic after dinner stroll. In addition to the nicely appointed, intimate dining room, there's the lively Scully's bar and, in the summer, the outdoor Blue Parrot Lounge. Owner's Joey and Scully treat you like old friends when you walk in, even if it?s your first time. If you're lucky, you might see the gorgeous blue and gold tucan (hear that Notre Dame fans?), after whom the outdoor lounge is named, perched upon Scully's shoulder as he chats with customers in the bar. The food is nicely prepared and quite good. The pasta dishes are excellent. We'll be going back there often, especially on nights when there's live entertainment, such a Gregory B or Dorian Castle. If you're looking for a nice evening, put Joey T's at the top of your list. Pros: Good Food in a Romantic Setting Cons: Bar dining can be loud more

Good food, atmosphere...kinda expensive. 6/1/2007

I am eating a delicious cannoli as I write this review...\r \r Paige777 had an unfortunate experience, that I read about here, just hours before I headed to the restaraunt.\r \r For my experience, it was overall good...however, I believe Paige777 and I may have crossed paths with the same manager.\r \r I agree, that he gives off a ""rude"" demeanor...not very ""personable."" \r \r It started after being seated at my table, waiting for the rest of the group to arrive.\r \r I decided to pass the time, and headed for the bar, where the manager was cutting some limes.\r \r I asked him if I may order a glass of wine...\r His response was one question after another, ....asking if I had a reservation,.... if I had been seated, ....where is the rest of my group... do you plan to go outside, etc.etc.\r \r All I wanted is to purchase a glass of wine! \r \r I started to feel as though I've commited some sort of crime, in front of a hanging judge, ready to dole out a harsh sentence!\r \r After that moment...things went well...\r \r The waiter was generally attentive...and did not keep us waiting too long.\r \r I had a nice appetizer of Artichoke Fritters, very unique. We also had baked potato skins....which were okay, but needed more balance with the saltiness.\r \r For my meal, I ordered the Beef Tenderloin with Shrimp on a skewer. Very good, and portioned just right.\r \r A word of caution...portion sizes for the pasta dishes are huge...\r \r Italian places overload pasta all the time, and skimp on the shrimp, chicken, etc that is added with it...\r \r Anyway, back to Joey T's...\r \r The meal included a choice of soups: chicken soup, minestrone, or chilled tomato basil. I chose the tomato basil...it was refreshing choice, very nice alternative to a hot soup.\r \r Ah, yes...I recall when this location in McHenry had the Dobyn's House Restaraunt Our family had fond memories of dining there...we thought we'd try Joey Ts...not bad at all....but could use some improvement in feeling welcomed. \r \r \r \r Pros: Good food... Cons: Avoid the manager...seems to be a bit of a cranky grouch! more

TERRIBLE SERVICE - DON'T BOTHER 5/13/2007

I went to this restaurant with some friends for a nice dinner. We asked the waitress for a few minutes more to decide what we wanted to eat. She came back after 25 minutes. We placed our order, and the waitress then told us that it would be a little longer than expected for our food to arrive. It ended up taking 2 hours to get our entrees! The food was just ok. When we spoke to the manager, he was extremely rude to us and unforgiving for the wait that we had. This was our first and last time at Joey T's! We will never go back there again! more
