In my oppinion, unethical practices for a business. 5/15/2011

My lawnmower would not start this spring after I filled up the tank with new gas, so we decided to bring our mower to Jim's Repair Service to get it fixed. My wife dropped off the lawnmower and she called me to ask me if it was alright for Jim to fix the lawnmower if it was under $125. I told her no, if it was below $85 dollars he could repair the problem with the engine because a brand new engine was $165. I told her to tell him I just want him to get the mower running again and to tell him the mower was not getting a spark. I get a call two weeks later to pick up the mower and that the total would be $84.72. When I went to pick up the lawn mower he put in a new spark plug (it had a new one when I dropped it off), changed the oil (which had also been changed), new fuel (which was also new when I dropped it off), new air filter, and a new carburetor inlet needle. He also did not have an explanation for me why there was not a spark when I could not get it running. I knew it was getting fresh gas, so the carburetor was not the issue. I also sprayed starting fluid in the cylinder and it would not start, so I definitely knew their was not a spark at the plug. I asked Jim why he changed out everything (plug, oil, and gas) when it was new? He told me it all was junk, junk plug, junk oil, and junk gas. I am so glad that I did not authorize more than an $85 dollar repair without a call! The lawnmower is running, but there was no reason why he did the extra work. All of the things he changed out (spark plug, oil, and gas) was brand new and top of the line. To add to this I put fuel stabilizer in the gas every fall and run the mower out of gas before I put it away for the Winter to make sure it starts in the Spring. If I had to do this all over again I would take my mower to anther shop. I also will not be getting anything fixed, or buying anything from Jim's Repair Service in the future. more

Buyer Beware! 1/18/2011

My lawnmower stopped working and after reading the other review, I decided to try Jim's Repair Service to fix my lawnmower. I will say right up front, that Jim's does good work. My lawnmower is running right, however, he milked me out of about $65. When I brought in my lawnmower, I told Jim that I only needed him to get it running again. My husband is extremely handy and I didn't need an air filter or change of oil. He told me I would get it back in about 3 weeks and he would call me if the repair was over $125. After 5 weeks I called and was told they weren't fixing lawnmowers right now (it is winter), but they would look at it as I wanted mine back. Then they called me a week later and said that the total was $124.84 and that they fixed the ignition module and also changed the oil, changed the air filter, added a conditioner to my fuel tank, changed the spark plug, and adjusted my self-propelled system. In other words, the part that I asked them to install was only $60 so they decided to do $65 more in repairs that I did not authorize. My husband picked up the lawnmower and asked Jim why they did all that work that I specifically told them not to, and all he would say is that they did not go over the $125 initial estimate. Needless to say, I will not be going back. If you do go to Jim's, don't authorize any dollar amount--have him call you with a quote to do specific work. more

professional, knows what he is doing, fair, does not waste your time 11/9/2008

He knows what he is doing and has the certificates that show his training. Very professional. He will not waste your time, and consequently do not waste his. If you go there for parts and do not have the part number, then be sure to bring in the model, serial, and all other numbers you can find. It is a good idea to bring in the old part as well. I needed a part for my 20 year old tractor. I went to three other shops and the other shops either told me the part was no longer available or would not take the time to check on it. Jim's staff tried in vain to find the part number for me. They finally called Jim from the shop to the front counter. In less than 15 minutes Jim located the part I needed. Seems the tractor I have was made by a company that had been bought and sold several times. Jim was the only one that knew where and how to look up the parts. Pros: Small shop, knows customer, refers to them by name Cons: Closed on Wednesday and Sunday. No evening hours. Saturday open 9-2 more
