Worst

First, don't order the J*rk Shrimp Skewers to go. I paid $9.00 and received 1 Skewer containing 4 Shrimp! What was even more insulting was the large container they placed it in!...

Not very good Jamaican food, Plantains were over fried and dry, patties were underdone, and the cabbage was sub par. I would not recommend this place. more

Jamicn Soul - Lansdowne - should know better 10/4/2009

considering the new branch in Lansdowne is associated with this established resteraunt they should have some idea how to run their business - two attempts to get food were succesful but each time the wait was unbearable. The first we waked in for take out and had to wait 35 minutes because they had no rice (this was in the middle of their service time -no rice?) the 2nd time we called ahead and was told pick was in 15 minutes - we arrived on time and waited over an hour with every ten minutes the staff telling us it would be another ten minutes. How could they be so clueless on how long it takes to prepare food and how could they be so disrespectful to customers to make them wait so long - never again . Pros: small but tasty portions Cons: not professional , poor service insulting long wait for food more

Terrible Service, Mediocre Food 8/9/2009

My first experience at the J3rk Hut was a great one - outdoor dining, live music, good service and great food. We decided to visit the Hut again since it was a beautiful evening and it would have been great to enjoy the band and food outdoors. Upon arriving we were disappointed to find out that due to ""zoning issues"" the outside was closed and there would be no entertainment. We took a table in the veranda which was nice enough. As a side note, you must order a minimum of $12 per person to sit in the veranda. Not sure why this is.. From here it was downhill. Service was awful! Our server seemed clueless and had to come back at least a few times to tell us that food we ordered was ""out."" This included a few key J3rk items despite their specialty being J3rk. My husband tried to order a red snapper prepared without J3rk (since they were out) and it was clearly not a snapper that arrived. I think one of the main draws of the J3rk Hut was the outdoor atmosphere, which can almost make you forget about the bad service. There are too many great restaurants in Philly to waste your time and money here. Pros: coconut shrimp, BYOB Cons: service, lack of items on menu, no outside dining more

Wonderful Changes 6/16/2009

I have not been to the Jamaican J Hut in over three years. Why? When I last dined there in 2006 food was HORRIBLE and the service was TERRIBLE. Last Saturday I had out-of-town company and we decided to South Street. As we drove by The JJH we could hear the band playing and my company wanted to check it out (he is a big Reggae fan). We parked in adjoining parking lot $8. not bad, and walked over to The JJH. To my SUPRISE there was a greeter at the gate who welcomed us in and motioned for a waiter to help us get seated and take our orders. HUGE CHANGES from the last time I was there. My friend ordered the Jrk Chicken and I got the Brown Stewed Fish. Our waiter informed us that the wait would be 45mins but the band was great so time went by rather quickly. The Jrk Chicken was excellent but the fish was burnt, dried out, bitter and had enough salt for 3 servings, but that was my only problem. Pumpkin Soup Appetizer was wonderful; our waiter Sam was very efficient. My advice; go; enjoy Happiness Reggae Band on a Saturday evening, BYOB and DO NOT order Brown Stewed Fish. Pros: Happiness Reggae Band Cons: Can't cook Brown Stewed Fish more

horrendous 4/26/2009

My friends and I waited patiently and quietly after being told it was a 90 minute wait for a party of 10. We enjoyed the live band, sat on the grass, and had a friendly bit of kickaround w/ a soccer ball and some of the other guests. 90 minutes passed, and shortly after that, the hostess told us our table was being prepared now. Just over another 30 minutes passed, and we were not shown to a table. The hostess and another member of the wait staff behaved rudely to politely offered inquiries about when we would be seated. We were finally shown to a table, and then did not have a waitress for about another 20 minutes. She finally identified herself, and promptly took another 15 minutes or so to get us menus. We saw her engaged in casual conversation and smoking w/ another person, while we continued to wait for her to come back and take our order, or at least provide us w/ glasses of water (by the way, we never even got waters. we were given a half-full dirty bucket of ice). She returned finally while the band was taking a break, and informed the band she could not get them anything to eat b/c it would take too long (we were seated next to them and could hear the discussion). I had enough at this point, but other members of my party apparently are much more tolerant of B-S than me, and were still willing to place an order. We asked the waitress for an estimate on getting food -- even just the appetizers -- and she said at least another hour b/c there were so many other orders that hadn't even been sent to the kitchen yet. Well, that was it for us. We left, tipped the band b/c they were the only good part of the experience, walked across the street to Pico de Gallo, got seated immediately and had great Mexican food. It was outrageous to be made to wait for so long while staff there were repeatedly rude to us. Also, there seemed to be a sense of total disorganization among the staff, and a trip inside from the patio where we were seated revealed an even more chaotic scene as we passed by the kitchen. I will never go there again. I can somewhat understand a long wait on a nice night on a weekend in the spring. But almost 3 hours after we had been told 90 minutes? Not acceptable. Also not acceptable was the rudeness, disorganization, and seeming disdain for the guests (in particular the band!). We waited patiently and politely, noting that some guests were not so reserved as we were about expressing their frustration w/ their wait-times. I don't care how good the food is, that place is a disaster. I only gave them one star b/c of the music, otherwise I would give it Zero stars. Pros: the band and the soccer kick-around Cons: service, disorganization, rudeness of staff more

Be Prepared 3/30/2009

First, don't order the J*rk Shrimp Skewers to go. I paid $9.00 and received 1 Skewer containing 4 Shrimp! What was even more insulting was the large container they placed it in! Second, the Dunn's River BBQ Wings ($6.00) were EXCELLENT. You get 4 wings, which I thought was adequate. Third, if you place a take-out order over the phone, ask point blank if they have run out of plantains. This happened to me once and to a friend once or twice. He believes that they withhold this information intentionally. My friend is Trini. He ordered the Oxtail and Vegetable Pattie, and he did not complain, and believe me, he is a complainer. I would order from there again, keeping in mind the issue with the shrimp skewers and the plantain. Pros: Some Great Food Cons: Service more

Will Never Go There Again 2/3/2009

Long wait to order and to receive the food, not to mention once we received it, it was cold, cabbage was salty, the rice was hard, and the chicken taste like it was a baked version. They only thing that was full was my trash can. If you want to waste your time and your money...by all means stop by the Jamaican Hut!!! Pros: Parking Cons: Service more

Overpriced, underfooded 1/31/2009

I ordered the Roti Curry Chicken. Cons: Poor value more

Best Caribbean food and bargain- but service totally inconsistent 12/20/2008

the place has lunch specials now and delivers. I am a regular at this place. All i get is the jrk and curry platters. The food is ALWAYS good. But this place always seems to ruin a good food experience with terrible service. Pros: excellent all around food Cons: service and juice drink pricing more

Good Jamaican Food....no major complaints here 12/13/2008

Walked in, no wait, placed an order, customer service was adequate, received our food in less then ten minutes. The oxtails were good, came with a few sides which was nice; plantains, cabbage, and red beans and rice. The plantains were a bit tough but the rest of the meal was good. The cabbage wasn't over or under seasoned, the oxtail sauce to the stew was good. The beef patties were warm not hot but tasted very good, although a bit spicy if expecting a mild flavor..Do recommend trying some of the the homemade juices as they were very fresh and rich in nature, watch out for the sugar rush though..Overall for a first time visit service and food weren't dissapointing more

Good food, good people 9/6/2008

To all the people complaining about the bones in the chicken, it is apparent that you have never been to Jamaica. The food is authentic and they are keeping it that way. They just chop it up with a meat cleaver in Jamaica the same as they do at the Hut. If you are looking for a boneless breast go to Applebees and stop complaining. Pros: Everything Cons: The people complaining about the bones more

very disappointing, AGAIN 9/2/2008

I feel very foolish for returning to the ""Hut"" for yet another disappointing dinner. I like to try a place at least twice before I completely write them off. This establishment tricked me three times. The first visit was for takeout jurk chicken that was actually semi frozen in the center, though cooked through. It had obviously been reheated perhaps from the day before. The second was a Sunday where we waited for over an hour for our appetizers of overly dressed BQ wings, soggy coconut shrimp, and an incompetent server. Entrees followed 30 min. later with bony chicken, hard, not-so-sweet-plaintains and tasteless rice. On our third visit, Labor day nite, we enjoyed the music, but again waited for an hour for our appetizers. There were three servers running around like chickens with their heads cut off, inefficient to say the least. They were working too hard for the 30 guests or so in the outside area. Appetizers arrived of ceviche(almost completely devoid of seafood), soggy wings. Sir may we have some forks at the very least?? Napkins...please? Jurk chicken for dinner was just as disappointing as the other visits, lukewarm, very bony. The Hut chops up the chicken, bone and all, which causes the multiple bone fragments. I was seriously afraid of chomping/swallowing the splintery bones. We paid, after we finally were able to chase down our server, and left without finishing our meals. The server tried really hard to take care of everyone, but just didnt have the forethought to bring what was needed from the kitchen and save himself a trip before food is served. I attribute this to lack of experience and planning. Why not have utensils/napkins/water pitchers outside where the guests are? I LOVE jurk chicken, and this is a far cry from what I have sampled in the Islands. We love the idea of the Hut; outside, live music, casual setting, bucket of beers shared with friends, but the food really is terrible, and the service needs some serious work. Pros: Great for a casual outdoor evening with a bucket of beer Cons: FOOD, Service, FOOD, Service! more

Just Understand What You're Getting Into 8/12/2008

Here's the thing about the j-hut-- Pros: Ambience, johnny cakes, being outside Cons: long wait, insects more

Don't even bother, this place SUX. 8/10/2008

This place really doesn't even deserve a single star. Talk about poor service. We were left completely incredulous after sitting for over an hour with absolutely NO SIGN of a waiter. When a waiter finally appeared, we were informed that they had run out of the j5rk (intentional typo) sauce. RUN OUT??? The name of the ""restaurant"" is Jamaica J5RK (intentional typo) Hut; How do you run out of your flagship ingredient? Do yourself a favor, don't even consider this pathetically managed clip joint. more

Had Potential 8/8/2008

We were anxious to try this place for a while, but were disappointed. The atmosphere was great, but the service was very slow (apps took > 1 hour). The food was a bit cold, and we were overcharged the posted fee for entertainment and corkage. more

If you are Jamaican, AVOID this ""trendy"" imitation. 8/3/2008

Caribbean Delight (on 11th and South, I believe) offers much better food and service for LITERALLY a quarter for the price. Cons: No Jamaican presence, poor service, poor food more

Please Make Reservations!!! 7/22/2008

I have been frequenting JJH for a few years now...mostly in the summer. The food of JJH truly brings back my memories of Jamaica...The j*rk is extra hot, the oxtails are devine, and the curry shrimp is simply delicious. They get very busy on weekends, so if your going with a larger party MAKE RESERVATIONS. Surprisingly, the service is ALWAYS up to par-if you can handle waiting a VERY long time for your food. So in short, servers are EXCELLENT, food is GREAT, very, very, very long WAIT for food. Pros: Great Food, Great Service Cons: Parking, Food takes too long to make, extremely busy on weekends, Prices more

Great Jamaican food at a great price! 7/15/2008

I am a regular traveller to the Caribbean, and before my last trip to Jamaica in May my husband and I went to the Jamaican J Hut to get our taste buds ready for our vacation! more
