Ordered the steak. Food was cold upon arrival. Had to reheat which made it tough to eat. Also very expensive for what was was given. Only about 5 little strips of meat. I have no problem paying $20 for a piece of steak but I should getting the entire cut of meat. Worth more like $13. more

Need to do something about those glasses 7/11/2011

Sat at the bar for a long afternoon with a friend. Beer selection was impressive, but the glasses were filthy. Each and every one. I'm not a squeamish guy but when I can see what color lipstick the previous user was wearing I'd at least like to now if she was cute if we're to share an STD. I applaud the effort to serve each beer in the appropriate glass (although Kolsch should be about a 10oz pour to maintain it's refreshing coldness) there is no excuse for greasy streaks & spots. Food was a bit ahead of itself. Had the Duck Confit 'hash'. Billed as an appetizer it had WAY too much duck, (which was not a true confit as it wasn't rich enough), too few potatoes & too much over salted 'reduction'. My salad was drenched in dressing. (hint: it should shine not swim) I also found it disappointing that despite spending close to $100 on food & drink we were never offered a buy back. Most unusual for a draft oriented bar. If I were to go back, it would be for the beer & will probably bring my own glasses or at least wear an outfit that matched the lipstick on the glass. I deem this place salvageable with 4 stars for effort but only 1 for execution. Good Luck. more

Great Time!!! 6/15/2011

Few days ago my friend and I decided to grab dinner at the Iron Monkey. We got there around 9pm and decided to enjoy their rooftop. Our Table was available right away which made us very happy. Our server was great; he let us know about all the great beers as well as what specials they had that day. I had a frozen margarita which was perfect for a hot day, and may I add not at all expensive. The overall vibe on the roof was excellent. Good music and happy staff and pleased clientele. We eat our dinner and enjoyed the summer breeze. It was just what I needed after a long day of work. My friend and I already made plans to visit the Iron Monkey again on the weekend. Can’t wait !!! more

Unfriendly and dirty 3/28/2011

My husband and I came here with another couple who live in Jersey City. It was a Friday night and we were excited to check out a new place for the first time. We sat at the bar and our husbands ordered our cocktails. I asked for a menu, and the girl handed it to my husband. I asked to order an appetizer, and she asked my husband if he wanted to order anything else because it wouldn't be enough for the 4 of us. Now, I know my hubby is good looking, but she acted like I didn't even exist! IT WAS EXTREMELY INSULTING. She then served me THE WORST chocolate martini I ever had in a glass with lipstick all around the rim!!. When I pointed out the dirty glass, she took my martini, and poured its contents into a new glass after wiping the rim with a dirty bar rag! I was so grossed out, I just looked at her, not believing what I had just seen. She made eye contact with me and I asked what kind of vodka she used because it didn't taste right, hoping she would make me another one in a proper clean chilled glass.....she got really pissy with me and said ""what kind of vodka do you WANT in it?"" I said ""never mind."" We then proceeded to watch her tell the other little blond bartender over by the register, because she turned around to look at us and she, too gave us a dirty look. I wouldn't even drink the damn thing because it was gross and the glass smelled gross, and I thought I would gag. Our husbands finished their beer, and we left to go to an Irish bar up the block which is where my friends usually go, and had a wonderful time. Never again will we set foot in this dump. more

Stay at the Bar 3/1/2011

went to the Iron Monkey for lunch on a Thursday afternoon, the downstairs Bars was great, Good music, GREAT girl Bartending, Gina or Regina, she knew her Beer , gave us samples, helped us decide what to drink, offered us Menus...we should have eaten at the bar, our glass was never empty, she had my wife laughing and was real genuine friendly.....everything changed when we went upstaits to eat....service was slow, waitress was clueless and worse, she did not seem to care....food was average at best....when we stopped back at the bar on our way out, Regina remembered what we were drinking and my wifes name......if i go back, it will be to have lunch at the Bar, nothing else. more

Filthy and Rude 7/31/2009

I ate here on July 16th and it was awful. After treking up 3 FLIGHTS of tenement stairs, you pass through the steamy, disorganized kitchen, only to go up ANOTHER FLIGHT of creaky stairs to the stale beer stinking roof deck. We were served water in dirty glasses, and then a beer served in a dirty glass. (no beer list, just a sweet but clueless server trying to remember...) Beer goes back, water goes untouched. We get BURNT beef skewers, soggy fries (as if they were made yesterday and then stuck in the fridge and then microwaved), the fuii salad looked day-old and the cheese burger had a scorch mark on it. WE send back the salad, try to deal with the food, and then give up and ask to see the manager. (it's bad, over-priced and we're customers. Asking for the manager seemed perfectly appropriate.) The server is super nice and apologetic (Oh, the kitchen is backed up! - Sadly, it was 4pm and the place was empty.) She goes to this fat bald Jersey D-bag who listens to her and then waves her off. She comes back and offers to comp the fries. ""Is that the manager?"" I ask. 'No, that's the owner."", she says. We paid full price, tipped 20% and promised never to return. Sorry, our reasonable concern wasn't worth the OWNERS time. STAY AWAY. Pros: It's close to Lighthorse Tavern Cons: Dirty dining area, dirty glasses, bad food, rude manager more

Terrific Food & Great Service! 11/26/2008

This is by far my favorite place to go for a casual and delicious meal in Jersey City. I've followed their Chef from when he worked at Marco & Pepe and Lighthorse Tavern and am happy he's landed at The Iron Monkey.\r \r The menu is eclectic and pairs well with the neighborhood pub feel of the place. I recommend the heartier dishes like Pork Shank with white beans or Chicken Thighs with roasted squash and olives both of which are well worth the $18 price tag. Pros: Excellent Food, Great Service, Relaxed Ambiance more
