Needs to try harder 8/6/2006

My girlfriend and I both ordered the Chef's menu and wine pairing and settled down for a relaxing Friday evening. Unfortunately, the evening felt rushed as the first course arrived ten seconds after the complimentary appetizers. The waitress simlpy placed the food on the table and walked away with no explaination of the dishes or a simple 'enjoy'. The second coures arrived half way through the first course and it was time to say 'slow down'. The whole evening was about to be over in half an hour. The food however tasted very fresh and the white wine well chosen. The main courses were prepared almost identical in presentation except for the salmon replaced the pork loin on my girlfriends plate. My girlfriends Tiramisu included strawberry slices on the side. My peach cobbler also unfortunately included strawberry slices on the side; an odd comination. We both felt the food and service lacked what it takes to bring us back. It has the potential to be very good but needs to try harder. Pros: fresh ingredients Cons: Lacks true style and sophistication more

Needs more creativity 8/6/2006

My girlfriend and I both ordered the Chef's choice dinner menu with the wine pairing hoping for a leisurely Friday evening dinner. We were given complimentary hummus syle spread and chick pea appitizers which would have been a nice to enjoy but the first course arrived ten seconds later. The waitress then brought the second course less than halfway through the first course and our dinner started to feel like we were going to be out of the place in less than half an hour. We requested that things slow down a little. There was also no explaination of the food itself when it was brought to the table and it all felt a little impersonal. The food however was very fresh and well presented. So far we had both enjoyed the salad followed by the ravioli. The white wine pairing was also a nice choice. My girlfriend ordered the pork loin and I ordered the salmon. Both meals arrived looking identical in presentation except for the fish was in the place of the pork on my girlfriends plate. There needs to be more creativity in the main courses to feel like you are not getting a production line dinner. The red wine pairing was good for the pork but not the salmon. Finally, the dessert arrived and once again the dissapointment of seeing strawberries on one plate accompanying a tiramisu and strawberries on the other plate accompanying a peach cobbler! It stared to feel like a big chain restaurant trying to be a small family restaurant. Needs to try harder to bring me back. Pros: Could be excellent Cons: Needs to rethink itself more

Lacking pizzazz 7/29/2006

I wanted so much to love this restaurant. Gorgeous building, windows, wood floors. Could there really be good Italian on lower Hawthorne? Unfortunatly, the food was slightly above average, the staff was competant at best (aside from the owner who kindly shared stories about the history of the building and the creation of his business) and the decor fell short. I wanted a place to come back to but the search for a place for a romantic Italian dinner on the eastside will instead continue. more

Take no substitutes - the best Italian restaurant in Portland. 7/21/2006

Iorio's food is hands-down the best restaurant in portland that specialises in Italian cuisine. The menu has all the staples that you expect but with a creative bent that makes it truly special. New on the menu is a duck breast that is accompanied by a barley risotto, a touch that makes the dish unique and exemplifies the imaginative bent of the restaurant. The pizza there, large enough to split but light enought to share among friends as an appetizer if you're hungry, is exceptional and competes in flavor and texture with Pizzicato and Hot Lips and is far superior to the limp and flavor-challenged pies at Nostrana. The service was extremely friendly and all of the recommendations that were made proved excellent. This resaurant really has what it takes, that special something that makes the difference from a place to get a good meal to a place to have a fantastic food experience. The best. Pros: Great Italian food, original menu, friendly service and intimate but relaxed atmosphere. Cons: cons? I can't think of any more
