Indian Food At Its Best 2/10/2010

I been several times ant the food is always fresh, not to mention very good. Service is always top notch and the staff always friendly. The place looks much better since the fire next door forced them to remodel. Pros: Small & Cozy more

favorite indian food in Texas 10/28/2009

I have been eating at India oven since 95 or 96. It is by far the best Indian food in Texas. I know because I have lived in every major city in Texas, and I have a favourite Indian restaurant in each one. My entire family loves India oven too. Whenever they come to visit me in San Antonio, we have to eat here. The buffet is always fresh and delicious. Since moving back here four months ago, my finance and I have eaten there at least two times a week. But as far as service goes, their wait staff is less than exceptional. Drink refills have to be asked for a lot of the time, even though a server will look at the half empty glass as he removes an empty plate. And when the server does notice, he tends to refill my glass only and forget my fiancés. It is almost uncomfortable going in there nowadays. One server in particular seems to go out of his way to be passive aggressive and I have no idea why. I tip based on performance and have worked in the service industry almost exclusively, so tips are above average in most places we frequent. I once waited through half my meal before my waiter brought a side item. Management should be looking after the front of the house considering the attitude of some of his employees. And I will be on the lookout for another favourite in San Antonio. I am not sure that we will ever eat here again. Pros: the food Cons: the service more

First time eating Indian food 12/11/2008

I rated this place as average because I really can't compare it to anything. I decided on my lunch break to try Indian food since I had never had it before. The place is small, but cozy. Lunch is a buffet style. I'm assuming so inexperienced customers can come sample. San Antonio isn't the most diverse city. We love our Mexican food. However the buffet is different from an buffet you will experience. IT IS FRESH. All homemade. And very delicious. The only problem I had with this place, is that my server (drinks), stood in the corner staring at me. He looked at me as if he wanted to hurt me. Other then that the food was awesome! more

Great for those seeking something new a different! 6/3/2007

Being as afraid to try new and different cuisines, trying Indian food for the first time was a scary experience but I soon found that I loved it! India Oven is small, cozy and makes you feel like you're spending time with family. The atmos is quiet with mostly small tables with candles on them which promotes a feeling of intimacy. The food is excellent and well prepared, full of flavor and I haven't found anything on the menu that I don't like. The menu offers a wide variety of chicken, lamb, beef, seafood and vegetarian dishes that will appeal to even the most discriminating of palates. You can choose to have your dish extra, extra mild or extra, extra spicy. The flavors are varied and each bite is a new experience. I would recommend that first timers do not try the vindaloo though! It's the most spicy dish on the menu and not for the faint of heart! Also, always have something good to drink (lager is the preferred to take the heat away) and order the nan bread, be it the regular or garlic or the variety basket. I guarantee you'll enjoy this! Pros: Food Cons: Service (a little slow) more

A refreshing change! 12/17/2006

I once got my wife to try Indian food in the Dallas area and she hated it. I thought ""oh well at least she tried"" and figured we'd never go out for indian again. When we moved to San Antonio, our new neighbors recommended this restaurant and my wife agreed to try it. She ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! She is hooked on their chicken tikka masalla with rice and naan bread. Not to mention, our 13 year old daughter is also hooked on this food now - something which I never thought would happen in a million years considering the looks she always gave me when I'd order chicken curry at the local chinese. \r Anyways, the atmosphere, food and service is great. The owners/management like to chat and have conversations. They also have a liquor license - for me that's a ""must have"" with any kind of indian food.\r The only criticisms I have of this restaurant is that sometimes it can take a while for them to ask you what you want to drink and I once went to the lunch buffet and there wasn't a great deal of choice. Otherwise, this is by far the best indian food in town!! Pros: Belly dancers occasionally. Fantastic indian food. Serve beer!! Cons: Small lunch buffet. Sometimes wait too long before being asked for drinks after being seated. more

AWESOME!!! 9/13/2006

My family and I have been going to this restaurant for years and we think it is the best!! I've tried other Indian restaurants, but no more! I keep coming back here! Hands down, this is my fave restaurant. Even my kids like the food!!! Great buffet at lunch, lots of choices-if you dont see what you want on the buffet, just ask-they will bring it to you. I love the chicken makhani, tomato coconut soup and the navratan korma! I have a friend from India and she says that this is the best she has tasted in San Antonio. Not toooo spicy, but loaded with flavor. I cant recommend this place enough!! You won't be disappointed! Pros: great buffet, wonderful flavors Cons: cost at dinner, but I'm a cheapskate!! more

Sunday Buffet 5/10/2003

Friendly service, good value for a large variety, quality and quantity of food during the buffet. We had a family group of 15 and everyone found something to eat. Pros: Value, Variety, Fast more

The Usual 11/27/2002

We went for the Sunday buffet and were not dissapointed. It offered the usual northern India cuisine, tandoori based, like nan and tandoori chicken with the usual sag paneer, etc. etc....items which you will see in 90% of all Indian restaurants. The food was fresh and the bins were full. I suppose this is the place to get your fill of Indian food at a reasonable price and not expect anything more. No complaints. more

The Nan was tolerable, other than that, everything was a big dissapointment. The sauces were bland, tasting more like canned soup than the sort of flare you would expect from a well prepared Indian dish. Can't comment on the service, I had take out but I won't be back to find out. You're better off buying a frozen version of your favorite Indian dish than paying to eat here. more
