Best

I have spent the past 3 1/2 years trying salon after salon all over the greater Boston area... Newbury Street, Wellesley, Concord, you name it, trying to find someone, anyone, who...

Worst

This is the worst salon experience I've ever had. Truly horrid service. I bought a Groupon and made an appointment. When I checked in, the tacky receptionist asked me to pre-pa...

genius... 1/11/2009

My stylist Matt, was a genius. His technique was artful and classy, and I left looking completely reinvented. Pros: complete satisfaction in a tranquil environment more

Never go to another salon again... 1/11/2009

Having course, curly hair, the right cut and technique is truly vital to an outstanding hair do. I have NEVER had anybody successfully cut, style, and straighten my unruly hair, as Matt did/does. Hair can truly make or break somebody..in the business world, as well as personal life, and I felt my best when I left the salon. I was very impressed with his expertise and product knowledge- I went home with a Moroccan Oil hair product that I can never do without now. Pros: Never disatisfied with my cut. more

Great stylists, awesome cuts...I wouldn't go anywhere else!!! 10/19/2008

ID is _the_ place to go when in/near Boston. I wouldn't even think of going any place else. The staff is friendly and the stylists are amazingly talented. I always go in there and just sit down and let the stylists do what _they_ think will look good with my face; I come out looking amazing. Pros: talented staff, luxe experience Cons: none! more

A Lifesaver 10/13/2008

After having a horrific haircut about two blocks away, I made an appointment for the same day in despair. I was greeted by a smiley receptionist and soft lighting when I walked in. There was a five-minute wait, during which I was brought coffee and chose reading material from about 15 kinds of magazines.\r \r My stylist, Sarah, calmed me down immediately by reassuring me that we could and would work with what hair I had left to create something fresh and different, and most of all, purposeful, so no one would be able to tell my haircut had been a mistake. We spent a good 15 minutes doing the consultation, and she assessed both of the photos of the styles I had brought in. She then made her own recommendation, but in the end let me choose what we would go for. I felt very comfortable going in to have my hair washed-- I knew exactly what we were going to do.\r \r The shampoo in itself was divine-- a relaxing head massage topped off the lovely Bumble & Bumble products that the salon uses. \r \r Sarah then got straight to work, and I couldn't have been made to feel more confident and comforted. She worked carefully and attentively, but still struck up an engaging conversation with me. She told me about her own past hair disasters, and talked about ways in which I could style my new hair. She spent about 45 minutes cutting my hair all in all, and checked the length once it was dry, too. She recommended two kinds of product, but wasn't pushy, and even encouraged me to try other products and see what worked best for me.\r \r The finished product? Unbeatable. Sarah transformed a wedgey bowl cut into a flirty, Rihanna-style pixie/bob-- and I've found myself a new style that I never would've dreamed would look so good on me!\r \r This salon is pricey-- $80 per cut for master stylists-- but in my opinion, totally worth it. It's not very often that you find a place you trust completely-- and now that I've finally found that place, I will definitely be going back. more

Best Salon outside of N.Y. 10/12/2008

I'm new to citysearch, so for kicks I looked up my new place of worship, id. Salon. Well, I felt compelled to write my 2cents to ""lindacal""......I think she was on something!!!!!!! So, readers, this is my experience with this little gem in Wellesley. I am a hair snob...thank you, mom!!!! I brought my children up in Wellesley, however, I always went in town for my hair etc. I had one glitch and went to a very high profiled salon in Wellesley next to Breuggers and then went back to Boston....From Mario Russo to Sassoon, Eccocentrics to Beaucage, you name it I went!!!!!! A few months ago I bumped into an old friend who also had big hair issues and she looked better than ever....where was she going but this place id.Salon! Well, all I can say is they gave me my own identity . After going through a divorce I needed a boost ....Helen, for color and wonderful Shirley for cut gave me a fabulous look. I get stopped all the time...I was given a short layered platinum cut...very cool and very different from everyone else...It's mine and they made it happen! That being said, ""lindacal"" is way off base....I since have sent so many friends, women who I get stopped by to id....I can't rave enough!!!! Pros: talent from all the stylists Cons: people think parking....but park behind Whole Foods...ample parking more

great salon 10/11/2008

I have never written an online review in my life, but felt compelled after reading the negative review of ID Salon, and specifically, Shirley, from ""lindacal"" . To put things in perspective: I have known Shirley for four years, both personally and professionally. Let's start first with the service and the cut: simply put, I feel like I have finally found someone who understands my hair and how to cut it. My hair could not be more different from Shirley's: long, curly, with a tendency to frizz. So I find the assertion that she manufactures the same haircut for everyone to be simply ridiculous. Furthermore, Shirley is one of the most thoughtful and intelligent hairdressers I have met. If you bother to ask her questions about why she is cutting the way she is, she carefully explains things about your hair that you never even noticed yourself! Sometimes I feel she knows my hair better than I do! Finally, you don't get to be where Shirley is without being exceptional. As one reviewer noted, SHE TRAINS BUMBLE AND BUMBLE HAIRDRESSERS IN NYC. She is in the top tier of her profession. Regarding the salon and its atmosphere, I find it to be professional, friendly, and UNPRETENTIOUS, and as has been said, the people who work there respect each other and are kind to each other. (Speaking of pretentious, I got the worst haircut of my life on Newbury Street). The stylists are comfortable discussing the serious and the mundane (or the inane--life is difficult enough--relax!). I agree with the other reviewers--when I go to get my hair done, I don't feel the need to discuss the latest medical journals I am reading. But if I wanted to, Shirley would be up for it: she's quite smart, insightful and curious. She's a person who is easy to spend time with, and we are lucky she decided to set up shop in the suburbs. Thanks Shirley--you're the best. Pros: highly skilled staff, relaxed and fun Cons: none! more

BEST HAIRCUT OF MY LIFE thanks Shirley & BEST MANI/PEDI EVER thanks Galina 10/11/2008

I wanted to cut my hair short for 3 years but was CHICKEN!I have been working with Shirley for about a year and we both decided it was time. She was AMAZING and booked extra time so that we would not be RUSHED! I walked out with the most breathtaking cut ever. Many stylist can not master both short & long cuts well Shirley can. She gets into a zen like quite state when she cuts, you are watching an artist at work. Co-workers, family, friends want a transformation like mine. I have been told I look like a model (this NEVER happened before). My other half told the valet don't just love her soft hair?!?If you want change your life start with a great cut-- book SHIRLEY and get a mani/pedi with GALINA! Your head, hand & feet will thank you. Pros: SHIRLEY & GALINA Cons: You must be CRAZY to find a con at this PLACE more

ID SALON is Top Notch 10/10/2008

I live 20 miles from ID Salon but it is worth the trip. Matt is fantastic and he really makes sure your cut will work for you. My cut looks great weeks later. Nice low key atmosphere and super nice staff. \r I recommend this salon you'll love it! Pros: Service, Parking more

Amazing Salon 10/9/2008

id Salon is an amazing salon. Shirley Ching, stylist and co-owner is humble, kind and hardworking. Shirley is a key trainer at the famed Bumble & Bumble in NY, put another way, SHE TRAINS THE BEST STYLISTS IN NY. Shirley has an impressive resume, extensive editorial background and has styled numerous celebrities. The nasty review that hurled personal insults at Shirley is mean spirited and frankly classless. Last time I checked, clients go to salons to escape and relax...not to read the Economist. It is one thing to dislike an experience, it is quite another to attack someone. But lets be honest, the reviewer is deeply unhappy, bored and base. P.S. Before you post a review in writing and comment on intelligence...LEARN TO SPELL! Scary doesn't have an ""E""! Rock on Shirley! Pros: Shirley, Helen and Matt more

Great salon! 5/28/2008

Talented stylists, talented colorists, Galina for pedicures and manicures...no need to trek to newbury st, fun atmosphere, whatever that previous disgruntled review said(there's always one, right?) I had a great experience and believe me I have been EVERYWHERE!...Warning ,...call ahead as these guys are booked, for a reason...personally, I like that..says alot, you know? more

salon id not recommended 3/20/2008

\r I went to salon Id b/c it was supposed to be the ""best kept secret"" salon in Wellesley. Well , it was not . I got some hippie chick stylist cutting my hair very poorly. She did a horrible job. I actually went to a different salon to get an opinion and they said she bearly cut my hair and left it uneven. Horrible Horrible DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SALON TO ANYONE!!!! THANK YOU more

Friendly and helpful front desk receptionist 3/12/2007

id.salon has a great support staff: from the front desk receptionist, Judy, who was very accommodating to my requests for make four future appointments in succession while helping me select the right products. She is friendly and very good at what she does. Also, the girl who shampooed my hair, Juni, did an incredible job: she even gave me a scalp massage. The atmosphere of the shop is relaxed: there is an extensive magazine selection and I have used two of the three owners for my hair services, Helen, gave me a beautiful partial foil and the haircut Matt gave me was amazing, especially since my hair is thick and wavy and can be difficult to manage. I would recommend this salon to anyone who lives in the Wellesley, Needham, Newton area. You will not be dissapointed. Pros: friendly staff and talented stylists Cons: none other than parking can be a challenge at times more

Great Manicures and Pedicures (only reason to go) 1/24/2007

\r Overall experience is NOT ""big city"" and certainly not a NYC salon but a comfortable place. \r Staff could be more friendly which would greatly enhance experience Pros: manicures and pedicures Cons: not very ""warm"" atmosphere more

I went elsewhere... 1/11/2007

The receptionist (Judy) was rude when I called to make my first appointment at ID Salon. She acted annoyed when I asked her for a recommendation for a stylist, and she sighed in disgust when I asked her how much my haircut would cost. I was so upset with how she treated me that I called back the next day to cancel the appointment. Ironically, she was also rude to me the next day too! ID Salon *might* be a fabulous salon... But I'm going to give my business to one of the many friendly salons in Wellesley. It pays to be nice to customers! Pros: I'm sure there are good things to say about the stylists Cons: Poor customer service! No website with helpful info. more

great find, cutting edge, talented stylists 11/15/2006

having been frustrated with ""newbury st"" I was recommended by a friend to try this ""best kept secret"" salon in wellesley .The location was easy to find and there is parking available! I then was welcomed warmly and got the BEST color and haircut ever! The atmosphere was friendly and the stylists there were beyond talented. Every client I saw left happy and looking fabulous, including me! i have since sent all my friends ( they all had different stylists by the way) all happy...every one.....I would advise anyone to check them out...It seems to be getting very popular.....I am not surprised...... Pros: educated stylists ,friendly atmosphere, parking more

poor colorists 9/25/2006

Two family members have gone to the i.d. salon for highlights, using two different colorists - one is the part owner. Neither one listened to our requests for highlight color and density. Instead they did what they thought would be ""good for"" us. In my case the result was an unatural brassy gold color, with dense and sparce patches of color. They offered to recolor and so I took the time to return and the recolor is no improvement. I think they just went throught the motions with no real attempt to fix their work. more

Superb -- Amazing find 8/22/2006

id. Salon opened in November 2005, very quietly and humbly, by three of Boston's best from Umi salon on Newb. Street. Fanfare was in order because this is THE BEST salon in New England. The work at id. salon is New York City good yet the salon has a relaxed atmosphere that is intelligent and never pretentious. The combination is wonderful. I've been to salons in Beverly Hills, NYC, Vienna, London, Paris, Rome (enough about me) and this is my favorite. Ask for Helen (color) or Shirley (cut) or Matthew (cut). Pros: Staff highly skilled; relaxed atmosphere; free parking!!! more
