Even though,Hunan Spring is rather hidden from the busy areas in Evanston and it feels like a little dump when you walk in, we can not express enough how much we love the food. Always fresh and always good, if not better than the last time we ate there. more

Growing up in San Francisco, you take good Chinese food for granted. After hunting all over town for a good replacement, I was afraid that I would have to give-up my favorite cuisine. These guys do it right. more

Food came on time, lo mein was a little dry but not bad overall. I was sick of eating "pan-asian" food so this was more authentic Chinese. more

The General Tso Tofu was very good - the right amount of spice and sweet. I will certainly order from them again. more

Ordered shrimp egg food young, shrimp fried rice, and general tso's chicken. It was all delicious, and they gave large shrimp in the rice instead of the tiny shrimp most places give. This is definitely my new go-to spot when I'm in the mood for chinese food! more

I don't write reviews.... Ever. But this place was so awesome I needed to write this. Amazingly freshly cooked. Delicious. Just ordered again. If you like good Chinese food, this is the place. My gf is not on par with Chinese food- she suggested we order from here again three days after we did the first time.... She's had her taste change all because of This place. YOU ORDER NOW!!!! more

Awful. I didn't get my food until two hours after I ordered, even though I live ten minutes away. The sesame chicken is way, way too sweet. Not worth it. Don't do it! more

FINALLY! I've found a Chinese restaurant on the north side of Chicago that makes Chinese food! Every other place seems to do some kind of weird Thai/Chinese fusion thing, which never ends well. This is the first time in ages that I've actually gotten lo mein made with lo mein noodles, no joke. And the best part? It's all delicious. I will definitely be ordering from here next time I get the yen for some Chinese chow. more

Delicious! Well worth the price and such a variety of things to order that I can get anything I'm craving! more

Good, cheap carry-out Chinese 9/2/2006

I've been going to Hunan Spring for lunch for years now and they consistently have good, inexpensive Chinese food. Make no mistake, this place is not Mei Shung, or even Pineyard. However, as long as you're not expecting the best Chinese in Chicago, you'll be very happy with their food. As the editorial says, it's located in a strip mall, and the ambience reflects that. We've gone there for lunch with as many as 8 but there are only about 8 tables so you need to be careful when you get there if going with a big group. They have a large menu, though I typically order either a lunch special or a combination plate. Both of these bundle one of about 20 entrees with your choice of soup or an egg roll and white or fried rice. I'm probably the wrong person to give a recommendation between the two as I usually get my combination plate with hot and sour soup then add an egg roll a la cart (I typically end up with leftovers and this is just enough food for two meals, plus then I don't have to choose between the two). Evanston has a lot of dining options and it's easy to overlook a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall but don't sell Hunan Spring short. They're a great, inexpensive option when you're in the mood for Chinese, for lunch or dinner. Pros: Excellent value Cons: As carry-out Chinese goes, none more
