Good, cheap carry-out Chinese 9/2/2006

I've been going to Hunan Spring for lunch for years now and they consistently have good, inexpensive Chinese food. Make no mistake, this place is not Mei Shung, or even Pineyard. However, as long as you're not expecting the best Chinese in Chicago, you'll be very happy with their food. As the editorial says, it's located in a strip mall, and the ambience reflects that. We've gone there for lunch with as many as 8 but there are only about 8 tables so you need to be careful when you get there if going with a big group. They have a large menu, though I typically order either a lunch special or a combination plate. Both of these bundle one of about 20 entrees with your choice of soup or an egg roll and white or fried rice. I'm probably the wrong person to give a recommendation between the two as I usually get my combination plate with hot and sour soup then add an egg roll a la cart (I typically end up with leftovers and this is just enough food for two meals, plus then I don't have to choose between the two). Evanston has a lot of dining options and it's easy to overlook a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall but don't sell Hunan Spring short. They're a great, inexpensive option when you're in the mood for Chinese, for lunch or dinner. Pros: Excellent value Cons: As carry-out Chinese goes, none more
