I've tried Houston Garden Center many times and the results seem to always be the same. Their plants are not guaranteed and once you leave the lot your on your own. Good luck geet...

worst place to shop for plants 4/2/2012

I swore I would never go back to this center for my plants but like a fool there I was again this spring. I had a coupon for $5. off of $50. After the woman rang up my purchase she said something is wrong, yes she was english speaking caucasian, she got the manager? spanish speaking woman. She tells me you saved .14 cents. well how can that be? she says you take off the coupon then add the tax but if you spend a lot you get more off. huh??? so i call corporate and she says yes that's right you take off the coupon then add the tax. Hmm Red lobster didnt do that she says we are not Red Lobster. I told her well i am looking at all your bad reviews I guess I will add mine. She says OK....Walmart, Home Depot guarantee their plants..Houston Garden Center does not and thats because they would go out of business. Most of the plants i have purchased there die after bringing them home. Even though they are just around the corner from my house I would drive out of town to avoid giving them any more of my money. more

Self service; better know your plants. 10/13/2008

I've been to the Rayford Sawdust store twice and found that a. no one there speaks very good English and b. they simply don't know plants. I see almost continuous ads for their plants at discounts up to 70%. What good is that if no one can help you pick out the plants? Also, a quick glance through their plants can tell even a beginning gardener like me that these are not A1 specimens. Home Depot might be a better bet if you're looking for pretty much run of the mill plants at a discount. You might even get some help there. Pros: Cheap plants Cons: No service more

Buy at your own risk! 5/14/2007

I've tried Houston Garden Center many times and the results seem to always be the same. Their plants are not guaranteed and once you leave the lot your on your own. Good luck geeting someone to help you. They're nothing more than a self-service garden retail. I've found that the survival rate of their plants is about 70%. Their prices are competitive, but not if you calculate that 30% will die. I even spoke with the manager to get a fair price on plants if I purchased 1000 asian ground cover plants...yes, that's right, 1000. She said that no discounts are given for quantity. I've been a retail manager for over 23 years and passing up a deal like this surprizes me. We're taking about a $2,500 single purchase here! If you just want a couple of plants for a flower bed and you already know what you want, then you'll be fine. If you need more then it would be wiser to look elsewhere. Pros: Decent variety. Cons: No service, No guarantee. more

They did not want my business apparently 3/6/2007

I have been in Houston 4 years and never bought plants. When it came time to get some for my balcony I naturally went to the place you see all over town; HOUSTON GARDEN CENTERS. I am bad with plants but wanted to get a few for my balcony with Spring almost here. I asked the manager if he could show me a few plants that would work for me, that would fit my sunlight situation and would be easy to maintain. He then had some guy who does not speak English assist me and of course this guy could not understand anything I said. So I went back to the manager, who was completely disinterested in helping me. I tried to tell him my sunlight situation and budget. He didn't really listen. Showed me two trees in the $60-100 range never even asking what kind of plants I might want or what my budget was (I didn't want trees, I wanted plants and herbs). The 3rd time I was speaking to the manager and he showed he wasn't interested I walked off and left. I will not go back to a place that treats its customers this way, especially a new customer. I can get plants just as easily at Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart or many other locations around Houston. I would recommend you do the same. more
