WHAT A SHAME! NICE VENUE BUT.... 2/14/2011

As said by mynewtown below, we too are new in town from a larger city up north and were very much interested in finding a jazz venue. We thought the House Of Jazz would be it! Unfortunately, we were very disappointed and sadly mistaken. Where do I start? When entering the ""House"" there was no love felt. The young lady at the courtesy desk was not friendly nor seemed happy to be there. There was a $10 cover charge, 5th & York was performing. Not bad for a live performance. We found our seating and our menus were slapped on the table by a waitress that did not want to serve us. We were rushed to order from both the wine and food menus due to them being shared by all the waitresses in the ""House"" since there were none on each table as well as salt & pepper shakers, they were being shifted from one table to another too. The wine & food menus were over priced and did not offer a great selection. After ordering a soft drink , to receive a refill the waitress said that she would need to take my glass for the refill because they did not have any more glasses. WHAT! I noticed that there were many paying customers drinking from 8oz plastic cups from Walmart. What else could be so wrong? Why not fabric napkins instead of paper? Over time due to the poor service another couple sitting next to us left and in passing said ""it would be there 1st and last time coming there they were going to McDonalds"". We stayed to get our monies worth and attempted to enjoy 5th & York until a Manager and the young lady at the courtesy desk got into an argument. Poor customer service, inexperienced and unprofessional staff. An unbelievable experience I would never wish on anyone. Get it together ""House Of Jazz"" we are starving for this venue in this area. more

so disappointed, poor service, never go there 12/12/2010

never in my life have i had an experience like this. I took my mother there for her 60Th birthday and it was awful. the service was slow, and the menu was just okay. one member of our party didn't even receive here meal. we paid to get in and paid too much for mixed drinks. that is all after the waiter dropped wine glasses on us, then spilled a mixed drink on my mother and aunt! she apologized and said she was having a bad night. the bill was a total disaster because the waitress had no clue who ordered what. lucky for us it was the first and last time we will visit. more

Nice Setting, but needs work 5/18/2010

As a newcomer from a much larger city, I wanted to check out what the city has to offer in Jazz. So, along with a few friends, we ventured to the House of Jazz. To our dismay, we had to pay a cover charge to get in even though we were planning to dine there. The tables are very close together and food prices are a little high, especially after paying a cover charge ($10 per person). My advise to the management is that if customers are dining at the establishment, then they should not be charged a cover charge. Now sure who the target market is but it seems as if they are not catering to those over 40. Four women (in their 50's with money) came as we were leaving who wanted to dine there; but, when told they had to pay an additional $10 per person, they left. Also, the Riesling and Moscato wines were terrible, especially for the price of $7 and up per glass. Barefoot, seriously?? The martini's aren't bad though (~$11). Personally, I will not be frequenting this venue until the management has made some changes. Pros: Nice Atmosphere, parking lot Cons: Cover charge, menu prices, awful wines more

Don't Waste Your $10 cover 1/10/2010

This was hands down a terrible experience. After a certain time, there is a $10 cover, which I wouldn't mind if I could have heard the person sitting across from me without the need of a megaphone. The music was so obnoxiously loud that I could't think. Our service was atrocious because we were a part of a larger party that obviously annoyed our server. She was very slow and full of attitude. I grew ill after eating the too-salty oysters and trying a very strong drink and had to leave, but my party remained. A member of my party was threatened with police because she escorted me out and they assumed she was skipping the bill even though she told them she would return and that I was ill. Regardless, 6 other ppl from the party were still there so there was no need for the threats. Ater requesting management, my friend was denied because the manager said she wasn't dressed appropriately to come out on the floor. \r \r A word of advice to The House of Jazz, if you wish to have poor attitudes amongst staff and service, at least have top notch food and music that doesn't deafen the patrons. Cons: Service, Menu, Management more

Needs Revamping 8/25/2009

I have given this place a shot a couple of times. The entertainment is always good. I have read reviews on other sites and the universal complaint is the $10 cover. You can avoid this by arriving before 7p, yet the band does not perform until 9pm/so. I would suggest they adopt a cover for after 9pm or reduce it. They could do better by having a 2 item minimum like The Comedy Theatre in Columbia, SC. They have variety& pretty good food unlike House of Jazz. The variety is not there, I say revamp the menu. Maybe add more bar foods/appetizers&salads, and you can still keep the pasta/seafood dishes(pricey). It is a nice steup, but needs a little more polishing. Pros: Live Music Cons: Menu, $10 cover more
