Its convioent location on Delmar and 170 is nice, but beside that it is a bust. The food is fairly expensive, the Chai is not very good, and the Gulabjamun is terrible. Most of th...

Horrible Attitude 1/1/2011

We went there on christmas day. Reached there at 2:05 pm. They were closing at 2:30 pm. They immediately told us to take whatever we wanted and after 5 minutes they started picking up the buffet. We requested them to wait at least we were finished. But they simply picked up the food. and made three rounds to our table pressuring us to quickly finish and go. This is the first time in my 20 years in the US, that a restaurant won't even wait for its customers to finish. Literally we had to run to get whatever we could.\r \r Left a very bad taste in mouth. I would never go to this restaurant and would not recommend it to any one. Food was okay but they didn't have a concept of customer service. Go there only if you want to feel unwanted.\r \r more

Excellent Restaurant 2/13/2009

The House of India is a great restaurant. The food is excellent and the service is excellent. The portions are good, I have always taken some home with me. We have tried all the Indian restaurants in the St. Louis area and this is our favorite. Our only complaint is that we don't live closer. If we did, we would go once a week! more

great food 2/7/2009

this was our first foray into Indion food. We were unsure what to try. we had the chicken tandoori and the lamb vindoo. we found the food and the service to be excellant. We were surprised by the many layers of flavor the food had. The vindoo was awesome. The flavors and the heat built up as you ate it but the spicy did not over power the many flavors in the sauce. we plan on eating there again and soon.\r Pros: atmosphere was great Cons: a little intimadating menu wise do not know anything about indian cuisine more

Make it take out 7/26/2007

The food at house of India is INCREDIBLE! I have never had a bad meal, however, the service can be a bit off putting. We avoid this and get our weekly fix of Chicken Mahkni (sooooo good) by ordering carry out. If you order carry out they give you a discount on any purchase over 25 dollars (like 10% or something) and as we found out one night that we ate in, you also get more food when you carry out. The portions are almost double when you carry out as when you eat in. I asked the owner about this when obviously I was disappointed that the entree my husband and I normally share wasn't even really enough to feed me and he basically said, yeah, we put more food in the carry out boxes. It seems to me that they want you to carry out or at least not linger in their restaurant. \r If you do decide that you would like to eat in the restaurant try going for lunch where they have a really good lunch buffet. The service is a little more relaxed and you definitely get a value. Pros: Good food, great carry out service Cons: service is iffy more

Wonderful Atomsphere 9/1/2006

This is my first time eating any India food. Excellent. Waiters were very kind and friendly. Never were our cups empty. The food was outstanding and I can't wait to go back for more. Will become one of my regulars. Definitely a place to try. Not into spice, just read their menus. I am not a spice type person... Enjoy! Pros: Service w/smiles. Friendly, excellent food. Cons: parking is tiny more

Taste India While Visiting The Loop 8/22/2005

If you have never experienced Indian food House Of India would be a great place to start. Indian food has a unique style and if you taste it once, you will find that all other food is bland and relatively tasteless in comparison. The ambience of the restaurant has a sophisticated touch yet most of the customers dress very casual. There is a lot of marinating involved in the food preparation here, so the meat is extremely tender and juicy when served. The spices used here not only makes the food look, smell and taste delicious, it also heals, soothes and rejuvenates the body. It is a well known fact that through out history India's spices was a much coveted commodity. It is said King Solomon sent Phoenician sailors to India to purchase spices. So you can experience great tasting food and be eating healthy. more

Best Indian Restaurant in St. Louis 5/18/2005

Easily the best Indian food we've had in St. Louis at reasonable prices. Definitely try the Chicken Tika Masala! Service is a little hit or miss, but they definitely try hard (unlike some other local Indian places that seem to strive to be rude or even "feel up" female patrons!) - for whatever the reason, Indian restaurants always seem to have a problem in this facet of the dining experience. The last time we went, they had expanded the restaurant, which greatly helps with the crowding issues they used to have. Parking is a little bit tight in the front of the restaurant, but going around the corner of the "mini strip mall" that they're in solves the problem. Pros: great food, good prices Cons: crowded, parking more

Great food 9/24/2004

House of India is one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis. The chicken biryani is the best I've found anywhere, and the lunch buffet is fantastic. They often have choices on the buffet that you can't order otherwise. I have always been seated promptly, and the waiters always seem to refill drinks in a timely manner. They also do take out (I think you actually get more food that way). Though it's usually pretty crowded, I haven't ever felt like the restaurant was too noisy. The waiters do rush you during the lunch buffet if you get there late. Pros: food, decent price, buffet more

An honest opinion 2/28/2004

I have a love-hate relationship with House of India. The quality of food vaires from good to below average depending on what you order. It is a good place to go for a weekend buffet specially if you are new to Indian food. However, focus of the establishement is to feed you and kick you out in the shortest time possible. Even if you had a great meal, their attitude can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Pros: Inexpensive, Good weekend buffet Cons: , mainly represents not more

waiters can be weird 7/10/2002

food is great--the only place i go for indian anymore. but be forewarned...the waiters are a bit eccentric. some are hard to hear, others not friendly, one has a very strange sense of humor...he has waited on me 2 times and each time he said something insulting to me. i know he was trying to joke but it came off...weird. shouldn't stop you from enjoying the food, though more
