Hot Mess

I have been to Hotmess multiple times for coloring and cuts and have been completely satisfied every time. Missie takes the time to listen to my ideas then translates them beautifully into a look that embodies everything I asked for and more!! I constantly get complements how how great my hair color looks. I would recommend Hotmess to anyone looking for a quality hairstyle. Overall my experience was very good. Denise was my stylist. She was charming and accommodating. Every request that I had was fulfilled, my color choice, and my cut. I was their last appointment for the night and Gladys (the owner) came to chit-chat with me helping the time fly due to an almost double booking. This was a nice touch, from previous experience most salons would have let a first timer just sit there, assume they like the music their playing or want to listen a conversation. Also, my children stopped in for a quick minute and Nas (the dog) behaved himself well. I would go back, despite the 30 minute travel. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Price more

I went to Hot Mess for the first time a few weeks ago. I showed Missy a couple of pictures of a style that I liked and explained the look I wanted. She did a good job on the cut--she even made it a little funkier than what I had described which was cool. There was plenty of metered parking out front and it was easy to find. Well I chose this Salon because of all the great reveiws here on City Search. Now I know not to trust places like this because unless you know someone personally who has been there you never know why they are giving it such a good reveiw. I say that because I was offered a ""FREE"" service the next time I come in if I put a good reveiw on City Search for them. If people have to be bribed to say something good about your shop or your work then it must not be worth it. I went in for a Cut and Color and I was there for 4 1/2 hours. My hair is think and just past my shoulders so its not that long. I brought a picture with me, but left with something totally different. I went back to see what they could do because my hair started to turn GREEN. At that point they tried to say that it was something that my previous stylist had used....Nice try!!! After it was all said and done I received my total of $200.00. Are you kidding me??? Thank god I had a coupon which still only took off $20. I would never recommend this Salon to anyone. I desparately needed to get my hair cut and when I called the Aveda salon I had been going to, my stylist and colorist had left. That was not the first time that happened to me so I hung up and started looking for a new place to go. In searching salons in my area on citysearch, I saw a link for Hotmess along with a list of glowing reviews. I decided to make an appointment right away; I'm glad I did. The salon has a great ambience. It's warm and inviting and the staff was friendly and attentive. Missy was my stylist and she was great. She took the time to look through pictures with me and talk to me to make sure she knew what I wanted. I was going for a pretty drastic change, which can be scary if you've never previously worked with the person, especially when you have naturally curly hair like I do but want a versatile style. I took a risk though and was thrilled with the results. As a testament to the products they use too, I am pleased to say that after having my color done, none of it even washed out in my first shampoos at home - a first for me. I also appreciated having the same person do my cut and color which has not been the case at most of the places I've been before. While I do think this salon is pricier than others in its class, they did offer coupons for my next visit :) Either way, I've had nothing but compliments since I went and will definitely go back. Hotmess is a Fabulous place to get your hair done. My stylist is Denise and shes awesome. She has fun personality and she knows alot about hair. I am puerto rican, so I have natural super curly hair. Being so, I dont trust many people with my hair, because many stylists do not know how to work with it. However, I trust Denise and she hasnt let me down yet. She cuts my hair and styles it very nicely and time efficiently. The service is great. The environment is trendy, modern, and welcoming. Since I've found Hotmess, I haven't gone anywhere else. I highly recommend Hotmess to anyone. The staff are great. The prices are expensive but you are getting your money's worth. Pros: styling, ambience, welcoming, Cons: Prices are a little pricy more

i am a 23yr old nursing student of Peruvian parents. My hair is thick, wavy, and i have a lot of it! I have been going to school in the Caribbean for the last 4 months. When I got home my hair was A MESS. The sun had fried it out. It was always getting tangled. I had split ends every where! Add in the stress of school and my hair was starting to fall out. i'm very picky about my hairdressers, as are most women. I got to Hotmess and Denise took care of me. She has a great personallity and was giving me tips on what i should do to help my hair be healthy again. She conditioned, cut and styled my hair. The only downfall is the price. the washing, conditioning, cut and styling cost around 60, as a student it was a bit much but I was so happy with the results and the service that I believed it to be totally worth it. I am planning to go back everytime I'm in town. Pros: Ambience, Service, Knowledge Cons: price more

nifty decor. friendly service. denise did my hair yesterday and she's\r got a wonderful personality. however, i was in the shop for 5 hrs. i\r told her that i had all natural hair and that i wanted it washed,\r conditioned, and straightened. perhaps i should have told her the\r length, but then again, she could have asked beforehand when i made\r the appt. she told me that she assumed my hair was going to be short\r (i'm a black woman) which made me realize that she made a horrible\r overbooking error. i had no choice but to wait it out, because i have\r an occasion to attend later this week. also, i was surprised at the\r price for the service--$110. she politely implicated that it would be\r cheaper for me next time to have my hair washed and/or blowdried and\r then come in for just the straightening. i guess it was a lot of work!\r i was also outraged to find out that the b-drying alone was\r $60...that's the price of a chemical treatment! it was my first time\r there, and i was so ready to go after so long that i forgot to present\r her the citysearch coupon. i really got a good look at my hair when i\r got home--wasn't impressed. she used a ceramic flat iron and didn't\r get close to the roots as well as a marcel iron can. in the shop, i\r alluded to my edges being nappy and she told me that she would take\r care of it. did she? no. i wondered how she was going to do that with a \r flat iron, but hey, she's the professional. again, i was so ready to\r go; it was whatever by that point. so obviously i have to whip out my\r own trusty at home utensils and satisfy myself. the shop specializes\r in color and highlights and as far as my eye could tell, that's on\r target. can't say the same for non-chemical services, or perhaps even\r handling african american hair. the products are a\r wonder--shawrtzkopft, (european) i think. my hair is unbelievably\r moisturized. products? great. service? just okay....i'm on the hunt\r once again... Hot Mess is a great place for a haircut. My wife and I as well as our two daughters have been going there for a while now and have been very happy with their service everytime. The staff is extremely nice and friendly. My family and I will be customers for a long time. more

I love this salon and refuse to get my hair done anywhere else now-- be sure you ask for Melissa; she is fantastic with color and cuts and really tries to find out what you want done before getting started. I first came in after trying to do my own hair, first by cutting it and then by applying a hideous box dye, and Melissa fixed it and actually made it cute, no small feat. Now I go back to her for everything. She is super conscientous and will not let you leave the salon until your hair is perfect and you love it --I also love this salon because it has a great atmosphere is super laid-back and comfortable, and it has reasonable prices, even while having the best products, so it's really the best of both worlds (and cookies and lemonade don't hurt!) :) I'd recommend this to anyone. more

found hotmess on city search, saw all the great reviews so i gave it a try and i LOVED it !!!!! i saw denise and she did a GREAT job on my hair the color came out perfect . i will never go anywhere but hotmess, great place and great people couldnt ask for anything better in a salon !!!!! I have been to this Salon several times and each time i go in it gets better and better....never have i walked out unhappy....Denise is the stylist i see everytime and she clearly rocks!!! she does an ausome job and her personality is great!!....She takes her time to perfection and it is greatly appreciated everyone asks where did i go.....I will definetly keep coming back not only for the excellent sercvice the relaxed setting and the beautiful stylists but for the comfortness!!! Hotmess is by far the best salon I've been in. My 3rd visit is coming up which is a record for any salon with me. I've never been happy enough to go to the same place twice. I have had to go back to salons for them to fix their mistakes. I love everything about the salon. No pressure, everyone has a positive attitude and you don't walk in feeling intimidated...but you DO walk out feeling like a Rockstar! Pros: AMBIENCE, PARKING PRICE, AND FRIENDLY /TALENTED STYLISTS! Easy street parking; great decor. Denise did highlights and cut; really took her time to get it right; at first, I thought cut was a bit shorter than I wanted, but I have gotten so many compliments and people asking where I had it done. It's really great; will definitely go back! more

I really really loved Denise's work. I never thought I could be 'chic' but this woman changed my look with ease. She has true talent for picking what cut goes well with your face all that for a very affordable price!\r I also have brought some friends along and they loved her! more

Hotmess is good salon however i wouldn't call it excellent. i went there because the reviews were great and i expected the cuts to be the same. i recently learned that you really can't trust the reviews for this place. the stylists give you free cuts/discounts if you go to citysearch and rave about their salon. this sounds like cheating to me.\r don't get me wrong, Hotmess gives good haircuts but not the best. i'm back to serching for a better salon. ""You want great service and great prices"" I give HOTMESS a 10! They fixed one of my worse hair dyes and gave me great suggestions to give me exactly what I wanted. I highly recommend HOTMESS for not only the great job that they did but the prices are not too the extreme but well worth the work. The ladies at the salon are great when you walk in there they treat you and make you feel like your their number one priority and I am strict with customer service. I let my hair grow for the past 9 years or more. It grew past my butt and decided that I wanted a change for the new year (2007). I always said I was going to donate my hair to the Locks of Love the day I did cut it. I was very hesitant and picky in deciding whether I was going to follow through with it and where I should go. I was referred to Hotmess by a coworker and made the call. I made the appointment and Lina was my stylist. She did a great job! I had 12 inches or more cut, in layers, partially highlighted and straightened, THE WORKS!! I was very excited yet nervous because this was a drastic change for me. Lina went out of her way to make me feel at ease, reassured me that I was going to look beautiful and that I am going to love my new look. I trusted her, but continued to be a pest throughout the whole process :-) I told you I was picky.\r \r I received a lot of compliments from my family and peers. Several of my coworkers said that I looked like a totally different person, they had to do a double take.\r \r I would definitely go back to Hotmess and would like Lina to do be my stylist.\r \r I recommend those who are hesitant about where to go and who to trust with your hair, to visit Hotmess just once, that's all you need and you won't want to go anywhere else. Denise and Gladys are fantastic! The salon is clean, cute, and fresh: a gem in Portage Park. From the moment you walk in the door, you are treated as a special guest. Not only did Denise give me a hot new look, she made me feel comfortable and welcome. It is the attention to detail and high standard of customer service that sets HotMess above my previous Park Ridge salon. Amazing! My experience at Hotmess was most enjoyable and satisfied. I was greeted as soon as I came in by Glady?s and her amazing black Lab Notradamis. I felt welcomed and special. They offered me something to drink and sat me down as my stylist Denise introduced herself. I told my stylist to do something to my hair. Of course Denise looked at my hair and suggested a color and cut. Which was perfect. She gave me great tips and how to take care of it. The place is amazing and up beat.
