Far away but great 9/6/2006

If you live downtown this bar is kind of a pain to get to unless you have a car or know someone with one. It does have one of the biggest selections of beer I have ever seen and the ambiance is great, very low key and laid back. The food is just ok, I had the lentil sandwich which was a bit dry and the service was slow in the back but I'd definitely go back to try more of the beer! more

When Can I Move In 5/18/2006

Seriously folks, I could live here. The seating areas (front and back) are cozy and friendly; I never mind bumping elbows because all the patrons are so interesting! If you go for one reason, go for the beer. If you go for two reasons, go for the beer, and the mussels. The mussels are the best I have ever had. The only negative I have experienced so far has been the wait. How many people need to eat dinner at 5PM on Saturday anyway? (of course, I'm only going at that time to drink!) more

Belgian Beer 5/2/2006

I have a buddy who is Belgian and he swears by this place, saying that no other place in Chicago can provide a good Belgian beer like this place can. I really can't vouch for that, but I can tell you that the beer selection here is unsurpassed by any other bar I have ever been too. It's good beer too. The place has a very crowded atmosphere and it always seems happening in here. The food here is great too and not a waste like many other bars in the area. I like the crowd here and enjoy trying out different types of beers at this place. more

The Hopleaf 4/27/2006

Disclaimer: I have only been to the Hopleaf twice, and people who I trust say that they like it and that I should give it a third chance. However... The Hopleaf has somehow managed to build a reputation as the foremost beer bar in Chicago. It's true that they have many good beers, but when I look at their menu, I see nothing that I can't get cheaper somewhere else in Chicago (Notably the Maproom, Smallbar, and the University of Chicago Pub.) Frankly, I have never seen such a long menu of beers that don't really excite me. Add to that a prevailing air of pretension, bartenders who didn't seem to give a crap that I was there, and the fact that they wouldn't even let me sit down because I wasn't willing to order expensive food, and it adds up to a place that I pretty much despise. So there you have it. Forget the Hopleaf. Go to the Maproom. more

My Belgian Boss LOVES this place! 4/15/2006

I'm not a beer drinker, but my boss is. He grew up in Belgium, and swears it has the best beer in the world. HE LOVES THE HOPLEAF. They've got the beer selection, they've got good food, and they've got the dark wood atmosphere going of a real good pub. I would highly recommend this place! more

A taste of Europe 3/14/2006

I originally came to Hopleaf after hearing that they have Delirium Tremmens on tap. By one rating, this is supposed to be the number on beer in the world, and I'm sure near the top in other ratings. They have a huge selection of Belgian (and otherwise) beers that you would never find, or even hear of anywhere else. Just recently I took my Dad here (which shows that this place is a good stop for any one, despite age/status, etc) and he discovered another beer they have on tap is Leffe Brune. He said he has never seen that beer in the States before and according to the bartenders, they only just got it in about 2 months ago. What a find! It actually is a very good beer. The bartenders are friendly and helpful, and the only drawback to this place is that it gets very busy, even on weeknights, and unless you sit in the back in the restaurant section to get something to eat, you have to wait quite a while usually to get a spot near or at the bar. more

Hopleaf Bar 3/9/2006

I think this bar has the biggest beer menu I have yet to have seen at any other place. They have lots of cool choices and a few that you won't really find anywhere else. It has a nice atmosphere here and it is always fun. I've never tried the food here but they do have some restaurant style seating here and also a food menu. Also there is a cool jukebox you can try out while you are enjoying your great beer! more

Most European Bar in Chicago 3/8/2006

I love the Hopleaf and I will make any excuse to go. In fact, I don't even need it an excuse, it's the Hopleaf! The beer selection is stupendous, especially in relation to Belgium beers. Apparently they've added Rodenbach to the list, although I haven't been in to order it yet. It is a must try. The mussels are divine as are the fries served with aioli mayonnaise. I've never had a bad or even mediocre meal here; although I haven't exhausted the menu, I'm convinced everything is delicious. Week nights are better if you go. I went last Saturday at 5:30 PM and the wait for a table was over an hour. I'm told it clears up after 8PM or so, but need to verify. more

The Hopleaf 2/28/2006

The Hopleaf is a great place to go when you want to splurge on dinner and libations with fellow discerning beer and food snobs. You can order a MGD here, but why? They're most known for their impressive selection of Belgian beer here in addition to a fantastic menu of gourmet food. I've heard the scallops are great, but I can't seem to get past some of their traditional and very meaty dishes. Make sure you try the fries-- you'll never accept McDonald's fries again. more

Fantastic Belgian Beer 2/8/2006

The Hopleaf is everything I could ask for in a bar/restaurant-- an upscale atmosphere with a separated dining room, urban decor, good music, a great food selection including delicious mussels, and of course, amazing beer. Belgians are their favorites here, and they go quite well with the fare. Hopleaf doesn't have your traditional burgers and fries fare, though; instead, they've take an innovative spin on comfort food and added a little gourmet touch. Try Hopleaf; I guarantee you'll like the food AND the beer! more

My Favorite Bar/Restaurant in the Windy City 12/16/2005

I don't know why this is. Perhaps it was the cold snowy night I first walked into the warm, inviting confines of the Hopleaf or maybe it was the Flemish stew paired with a delightful Chamay Triple. In any event, I love this place and recommend it to anyone that's looking for a fun, laid-back night out on Chicago's northside. Since it's in Andersonville, it can be a bit of a trek to get there if you're coming from LP but it's an easy cab ride from Evanston or Lakeview. Simply put, Hopleaf rocks!!! more

Hopleaf - Great Beer Variety 9/14/2005

Hopleaf has been in the Andersonville neighborhood before Andersonville became trendy. The bar is small and cozy. The variety of beers is incredible. They offer beers from all over the world. I would recommend eating before going to Hopleaf. The atomosphere is very laid back. The service is a bit slow but it's fitting for the atmosphere. Order your refills early. more
