Quintessential Charleston Restaurant 5/1/2009

Hominy Grill has it all... great food, great atmosphere, great prices and a friendly staff. HG is off the beaten path which makes it feel more ""small town"" than tourist attraction like restaurants on Market/King/Broad. The food is an excellent, the banana /pumpkin bread is delicious and the biscuits and gravy was a nice departure from the normal. The coffee was better than you get at Starbucks and had a nice bold, rich flavor. Not normally a grits fan...I ate them without adding a single thing and I didn’t leave a single hominy in the cup! The staff was also friendly and completed the total dining experience. All this for the same/less than you would pay at an IHOP or Cracker Barrel. When I think of Charleston breakfast, Hominy Grill is the first on my list! Pros: Perfect Southern Breakfast more

Charleston Find 4/1/2009

Another restaurant that I have to go back to multiple times to enjoy the variety of choices on the menu. This is a great example of Charleston neighborhood dining. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Atmosphere is not plush, not romantic more

A Charleston hot-spot. 3/3/2009

I have only been here for breakfast but, the food is pretty good. You can choose from eggs to pancakes. Recommended by many locals. Get there early! Pros: A Charleston Gem. Cons: Sometimes the wait is long. more

Best Shrimp and Grits anywhere! 7/12/2008

Amazing shrimp and grits, a true charleston favorite, a little off the beaten path but well worth the drive over. It is the type of place you find yourself again and again. The cornbread is also amazing, as are the biscuits, the experiance as a whole is simply divine! more

Not all that, but pretty good 6/23/2008

Reading other reviews on this site and chowhound and roadfood, I thought that eating here would like going to heaven. It was good, but not 'five-star good.'\r \r It is a busy place popular with both locals and tourists. No waiting inside, so we got to wait in the 90 degree steamy Charleston heat. Once inside, it is fairly noisy due to the wood floors and stamped tin ceiling. Our food arrived fairly quickly after our order was taken. The service was very friendly, but could have been better (we were never offered refills on our drinks.)\r \r I had the juevos rancheros (we ate on a Saturday and ordered from the brunch menu.) They were quite tasty. Other folks at my table ordered the eggplant sandwich, smothered eggs and chicken salad sandwich. Everyone thought the food was good.\r \r I would suggest you go, but go at an off-hour to avoid the wait. Pros: good food Cons: wait outside, a little touristy more

Shrimp and grits and buttermilk pie 4/7/2008

Great Place, but really noisy on the inside. They have the best shrimp and grits (without gravy) in Charleston. My favorite dessert is the buttermilk pie. Pros: free but limited parking, great food Cons: noisy, small parking lot more

Great Low-Country food experience. 1/4/2008

Non-pretentious atmosphere on the edge of downtown Charleston. Server was perky, informed and very helpful. Food excellent, wine list good, service timely. A bit noisy, but a great value. Pros: Informed service and great food Cons: A bit noisy more
