Bad Service, Decent Food 2/17/2012

Similar to the last review, I was very turned off by the ticky-tack price add-ons and attitude of the owner. I went in with a $20, hand written gift certificate, to pay for an order of $13.40. She then said that I had to buy another item, that she had no other gift certificates to write one (again, just a printout that was written on with pen) and could not sell me a new gift certificate. She then said, ok starting with a total of $14.40 (added on $1.00), you must order something worth $5.25. I ordered an additional order of nachos to take with me, and ended up having to pay $1.04 over the gift certificate and have an extra order I didn't want. The food is decent, the owner is either singing which can be ""fun"" in theory but not in practice, or pulling sleazy moves. Her daughters serve, ranging from very polite to extreme teenage angst and apathy. I don't think this place is going to stay around with it's attitude towards customers. more

so so 7/11/2011

honestly i expected more. It says BYOB outside but they force you to order two servings each if you bring in alcohol. We asked for a glass of water and they charged us $2/bottle of water. The food was really so so ...and in the end dinner was ~$30 each, about twice what it should have been given location, quality and taste. I cannot comprehend how this place is still in business. more

Great Mole Poblano 3/30/2011

My Mom and I had a great experience. Hidalgo is now located in Clifton Heights, on Baltimore Pike. Cozy, the music festive but not overpowering, the decor charming. The chips are fantastic, crispy with a subtle kind of sweetness to them, washed down with a Mexican mango soda. I ordered the Mole Poblano, and was delighted to have it served rather artfully and had an amazing taste, smooth and warming. No spoilers on what my Mom ordered, I expect she'll be posting review of her own. The service was friendly, our server (is she the owner?) was informative and obviously passionate about the food, a passion which certainly can't be bad for lovers of authentic Mexican food. I'm looking forward to my next visit. OH, and the desert! I can't remember the exact name, a pair of empanadas stuffed with apple, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with vanilla ice cream. Very good! more

Wow! Unbelievably offensive owner! 6/5/2009

My girlfriend and I eat out rather frequently, try to support local businesses and generally avoid the chain restaurants. But the owner/waitress of Hidalgo needs to get a clue. We ordered two of the pricier entrees (one of them a ""special"") and an order of chips and pico de gallo to start. Then she informs us that we ""have to order appetizers too"" because we brought our own beer. Let's see - we've just ordered $45 of food, and would surely have given them the opportunity to gouge us on a second order of chips, but this disgusting woman felt the need to tell my girlfriend and I what we had to order to ""cover her expensive rent"" (her words). Appalled, we left, at my girlfriend's insistence. I fully believe some of the other reviews that rave about the food, but can't believe that in a weak economy a restaurant would chase customers away like that. Considering that all that rent pays for their spot in an otherwise-empty strip mall in Delaware County, you'd think they would be a bit more welcoming to new customers. Oh yeah - the owner also followed us outside with my half-finished bottle of Sierra Nevada that I had to leave on the table. ""YOU need to throw this out!!!"" she said, and left it on the ground in front of her own restaurant. Really classy! more

Real Mexican food, BYOB 5/17/2009

Pasted from my Yelp review : My family is very keen on authentic Latin American food, to put it mildly, and so we were beyond thrilled to find this restaurant in our backyard. This is a family-owned joint, NOT a chain, and features food from the region where they are from (Hildalgo, Mexico), in the central part of the country. We were also beyond thrilled that it's a BYOB, which to us is usually BYOW (wine); they also have margarita mix on hand if you BYOT (tequila). Food has been consistently very good to great. Service is is consistently slow to very slow because there are only two people waiting tables (the mom and one of her daughters), and mom is often busy explaining to tables that service _will_ be slow ""because this is not fast food place"". So don't rush her if you don't want to get lectured...just relax and enjoy the very good house salsa that is served with freshly deep-fried tortilla chips. We _always_ get at least one of ceviches, and often go for the entree specials that they clearly fuss over. But the normal menu is great, too -- I'll try to get a photograph of that someday and post it. Check out photos (above) for views of a recent meal we had. This restaurant is really good for kids and groups. OK to be loud and have a good time. If business is slow, the mom will sing for you. Really. Hours are 4:30-10:00pm except on Sunday when they close at 9:00pm. [Note: they have lots of American Express stickers around the room, and even American Express check holders -- but they don't TAKE American Express (Visa and Mastercard OK).] Go often and tell your friends -- I'd hate for this place to go under for lack of business. Authentic Mexican Food 3/27/2009

If you want excellent, authentic Mexican food, this is the place! Everything my husband and I have tried has been just wonderful, and you can have it ""hot"" or not. If you're lucky the owner will treat you with a song or two; she has a beautiful, powerful voice. Don't miss this place--it's a real find! Pros: BYOB Cons: What are the drawbacks? more
