Best

LOVE this place! It is by far the BEST burgers I have had in the Portland/Hillsboro area! Great prices, always great service and food.

Worst

Helvetia tavern is okay, but not as special as Portlanders make it out to be. The burgers are plain as plain can be, the restuarant is small, and service is so so. I know its ...

cheap but not the best hamburger 1/2/2005

Hamburger was huge for the price but the meat wasn't that great in quality (lumpy ground beef). I didn't think it was that different from the fast food chains. French fries are made of fresh cut potatoes which I like but they were soggy and not cripsy outside. Pros: value, view more

The Definitive Burger 9/14/2004

We made it out to Hillsboro based on word of mouth and we were certainly not disappointed. Arrive just before the lunch rush or you will wait. Extremely limited choices and no credit cards, but once you get over that, just go with it and enjoy the burgers. Outstanding! We like the special sauce and grilled onions. French fries were a bit heavy on the oil but very tasty. Pros: food, prices, cute building more

YUM 7/6/2004

I have been going to Helvetia Tavern since I was a baby. I believe it has had about two different owners in the past 20-30 years or so, the previous to the current one being my great aunt. I have simply never had a better burger. Family owned, quality ingredients, and a fun, enjoyable atmosphere. There's nothing like eating your favorite burger and having a beer with some friends on a warm summer evening in their tree-shaded back yard. You're not paying for the service here (which is usually friendly but busy), you're paying for a delicious burger and a good beer. Bring cash, because in order to keep their prices down, they don't pay Visa a percentage of every sale, which I think is great. Family owned, you don't have to worry about supporting a huge multi-million dollar chain. I usually get the jumbo burger and split it with my husband. My advice is to avoid the oily, soggy fries- if you want something fried on the side, I say go for the onion rings. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Pros: delicious food, fun atmosphere, good prices, no extra charge for VISA more

Definitely a good burger 4/9/2004

Have read about this place for a long time. Visited today for the first time. The parking lot was full on a sunny Saturday but we quickly grabbed a table outside. As promised the burgers are huge served in buns a little more like a platter at 8"". We had doubles which were tasty with the right proportions of mixed sauce, shredded lettuce. We added swiss cheese and bacon. The fries are definitely fresh cut, though ours were served just a little cool and not crisp. The onion rings are unremarkable. You'll love the setting though, and if you come on a sunny day sit outside to enjoy the rural countryside. Pros: very cute, good burgers, reasonable cost more

Burger wars 5/20/2003

Stanich's burger is tops, but this was a good burger. Their fries are probably the best in Portland. For those who haven't been, it's quite a drive. Service was not at a snailspace as with Stanich's, but slow nevertheless. I would definitely go back. Pros: fries more

Awesome ""Hole-In-The-Wall"" 2/17/2003

In the middle of nowhere, with the best biggest burger. ""Hole-In-The-Wall"" atmosphere. The food is so good, we had our wedding rehearsal dinner here. We always bring out-of-town friends, and everytime they come back to town, they want to eat here. Even our friends from England. Family seating, and non-family seating. Pool table and sport TV's. Check it out! more

Mmm...Mmm 1/6/2003

Took the family there last week, and it was the best decision I've made the whole week. The juicy burger with mushroom and onions with sharp cheddar was better than most steak dinners I've had at some lesser restaurants. The kids had the bacon burger, and pronounced it the best food they ever had :-) If there is a down side to this, it's that they want to go there all the time. This is the first time they were able to distinctively differentiate the Big Mac from another burger. Pros: superior burgers more

burger face 12/25/2002

one of the top two burgers in p-land,great place but is out of the way, well worth the trip........ Pros: lots of parking, great atmosphere, awesome food Cons: out of town, can be crowded more

Burger Taster 12/19/2002

Great place but the Carver Hanger gives you more burger for the money and the sauce is nearly identical. more

really missing portland 12/13/2002

After living away from Portland for a number of years, it is always nice to back to a restaurant like this one. Casual dining at it's best!! more

the best burgers in Portland 12/13/2002

The burgers with the ""goop"" are great. Use someof the ""goop"" with the french fries and you couldn't get a meal any better. Pros: Inexpensive, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

huge 11/1/2002

great burgers, good locations, ok service, good beer, overall worth going to more

Nirvana in a burger 10/26/2002

It just doesn't get any better than the Helvetia. What a great hang-out to ride your bike to, relax with friends, and enjoy the most mouth-watering burger you've ever had in your life! more

Great burger 10/25/2002

The Burgers are great. If you are very hungry, you get get the deluxe hamburger and it is about twice the size of the regular burger. The best part is the homemade fries and onion rings, you can order a large half-and-half. There is one downfall, they only serve RC for soft drinks. One last thing, it is a great place to bring your kids because they have a big screen tv in the dining room. more

Bigger burgers 10/17/2002

These burgers are BIG. And Fresh, and tasty. The service is friendly, the surroundings relaxing and pleasantly non-urban and non-suburban. Burgers and a brew were a treat here twenty years ago for my wife and I, and still are. If there is a better place to have a better burger, we have not found it. The only drawback is deciding whether to split a cheeseburger or indulge in two and pay later. Pros: great BIG burgers, inexpensive, pastoral Cons: not health food, limited menu more

What a bargain 9/24/2002

Great for Summer. Eating out in the back yard or on the deck is quite enjoyable. Great burger for under $4. Pros: Great Food, Good Parking, No minors on deck Cons: Small, rest. get crowded, No minors on deck more

YUMMY!!! Great Burgers! 9/18/2002

I think that Portland is lacking service and food that is worth the price. Go to Helvetia Tavern and you get a AWESOME burger for a GREAT price, with SUPER FRIES and SUPER service. It is worth the drive. Pros: Great burgers, Good Service more

mouth watering 9/17/2002

this is the best place, it hit's the spot. any time I want a great burger I will drive how ever long it takes me to get what I want. This is where we go when we want a mom and dad burger not the mcdonalds that the kids want. check it out..... more

Worth the trip! 9/14/2002

We travel 45 minutes one way just for these burgers- get them with bacon and grilled onions, and it will compare with the Double-Double from In-N-Out that we former Californians miss! Excellent fries and onion rings- usually need to add salt, but great with Ranch. They also have a veggie burger, chicken sandwich, and some turkey or ham (I cant recall now) sandwich that smaller kids might prefer. And they serve RC Cola- my fave! Service can be spotty at times, but we've had good luck the last few times we went out there. It's a fun place to watch sports on TV, too. Give it a try- you won't be sorry! Pros: Great burgers, perfect fries, serves RC Cola! Cons: limited menu, service so-so more

Worth the drive 7/31/2002

Take a scenic drive to get a REAL homemade burger. Big and juicy like they should be so arrive hungry. Outside seating is nice too. more
