Very disappointed 11/26/2007

I have no idea what people see in this restaurant. We made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner and were asked to confirm twice. We were told we got one of the last reservations. What a joke. There were tables everywhere, people walking in off the street. Very loud, very expensive, poor food. Pros: Can not find one Cons: Too many to list more

Best Service in Portland 10/16/2007

The Heathman has the best breakfast and service in Portland. The staff is amazingly attentive, always keeps your coffee full (and it's fantastic coffee), and is willing to accommodate all requests. This is one of the few restaurants that will let me order 1/2 an order of a menu item since I can never finish an entire one by myself. If you want to sit back, relax, and be pampered, this is the place to eat. Pros: Excellent Service, Delicious Food more

Okay, but there are MANY other places I'd rather go 10/15/2007

Going into the Heathman I had heard zero reviews from friends or acquaintances, though I'd heard about their well-above-average reputation here and there over the years. Upon being seated, we oohed and aaahed over the menu. EVERYTHING sounded amazing. Round One: the beet salad with green beans and blue cheese was the best of our first courses - I will mimic this one at home. My seafood chowder was heavy on the salt and cream, light on the seafood. My boyfriend's fig, cheese, and proscuitto appetizer, while sounding simple and spectacular, was so dull... and very light on the cheese (teeny tiny shreds). Round Two: My sturgeon (recommended by our server) was great, though somewhat overly fishy tasting. Our guest's spinish and chanterelle pasta was fantastic. The boyfriend's elk steak, requested medium to medium rare, was practically still alive when it was served. We would have let our server know had she checked on us... but she didn't.... after 10 minutes, we flagged down a busser to come to our rescue. Round Three: the flourless chocolate cake was typical, the caramel bread pudding was basically an ordinary flan. In summary - everything was okay...... but collectively, I wouldn't call it a memorable evening, aside from my company, of course. I won't be suggesting a follow-up visit anytime soon. Pros: Prompt seating, delicious beet salad Cons: The experience as a whole as incredibly average more

Paid for business lunch 10/4/2007

The Heathman is a little above my palate and pocketbook Take that into consideration with my comments. Pros: Decor, service Cons: Minor items that didn't infringe upon the meal or the occasion more

Overpriced, not veggie-friendly, good desserts 3/14/2007

I'd really been looking forward to eating at the Heathman, but was a little let down. There were basically no vegetarian options and not even that many fish options. Not impressed with the salad I got - the blue cheese was salty (probably Stilton) and just ok. I've had far better for half the price. The fish I got was very salty and the veggies were not identifiable and too buttery. However, their desserts were good (our table ordered a few and shared). I'd go back for maybe a glass of wine and dessert if we could find room in the back with the fireplace, but would probably not return for dinner. Overall not worth the money. Pros: Good desserts Cons: Not vegetarian friendly more

Remember: They aren't fast food, you know? 3/4/2007

People want to complain that they don't get their food promptly, that is because The Heathman is one of the last restaurants standing that actually takes their time to cook for you. The Heathman is also is focusing on giving the best service that you can have. Notice that everytime they clear your appetizer plates they clear your silverware as well. Notice that they wait to bus the whole table at once so that no one is eating alone. I get sick of all of these old folks who are used to eating in the 50's when service was different. Granted, the prices are somewhat high, but they buy the most expensive ingredients that they can find. Maybe there are certain nights that a certain cook or server are not at their best, and it is a shame that can ruin an overall perspective. The Heathman is different than any other restaurant in Portland, and is worth a try, and perhaps a second chance. Pros: New Generation of Great service Cons: not a ""turn and burn"" restaurant more

THE place to take that new lover the morning after ... 2/22/2007

Portland's best (and *exy and almost formal) breakfast. Try the eggs benedict with salmon or the hangtown fry. And don't forget the fresh orange juice. Super service and romantic atmosphere. Your new lover will want to check in ... more

Duck Foie Gras Cappacino in a word: YUM 11/13/2006

I'm happy with the Heathman choice. My friend made a comment about it not being romantic as the usual places we've been. I tend to agree. The lighting is bright, the seating arrangement can accomodate big groups, etc. But the food was exceptional. I can't say anything bad about the taste. The price, ehh..maybe a little high. So what did we eat? To start: Duck Liver Cappacino, Lamb Tongue, Syrah 2003 -Dragon (Australia), Entrees: Venison, Duck Confit, Dessert: Chocolate covered Cream Puffs, and a Tropical Dessert. This was one of those times when conversation made the evening. The food/tastes were secondary. Not very loud . Excellent place to talk. more

Fantastic Service 11/10/2006

Where do I start. We were spending the night downtown for a romatic evening and to be around the hustle and bustle of election night. Since we were going to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall we decided to stop in the bar and grab a few quick bites and some good drinks. Thankfully a table opened up pretty quickly because the place was packed! When we order our drinks I asked for Jim Beam on the Rocks and my girlfriend ordered a fancy martini...can't remember which one but it was very good. The waiter came back and informed me that they were out of Jim Beam...shock...horror...what is a Jim Beam faithful to do? Go to the next best thing, and it isn't Jack Daniels...sorry folks Jack is not a BOURBON. I chose to go with Basil Haydens, one of Jim Beams top shelf bourobons. I mean it was a special night so why not splurge. When the waiter returned he informed that since they were out of Jim Beam, he would only charge the Jim Beam price for the Basil to make up for it. I couldn't believe it. Money wise I had not thought much about my choice. I wish I could remember our servers name, a true gentlemen and knows what customer service means. We decided to go with the seared Ahi tuna and the Fondu appitizers. i wanted to try the lamb tongue, but they were all out. Guess I will have to go back :-). Food was excellent, service was prompt, and the atmosphere was bar-none. We will be back. Oh yeah our server got a fat tip for the bourbon swap....this place has won me over!!!!! Pros: great food, good service, neat bar Cons: ran out of Jim Beam....but hey it happens :-) more

Let down for the ages 9/26/2006

Dinner before symphony, a beautiful evening, ""check out the Heathman--it won't let you down."" Pros: great wine Cons: poor food more

Their lounge is the best date spot in town 9/2/2006

I've been here twice now - both times were for after dinner dessert and coffee only in the lounge - and I must say that I have been very impressed. The ambience is to die for. Half or more of the seating options are made for cuddlers. Service is excellent, and not down your throat. Dessert is classic and reasonably priced (compared to other dessert spots in town, that is). The coffee, though, is peculiarly expensive. Our vanilla creme brulee was 6.50 and, with two coffees, our total bill was 12.00. Hmm... Pros: service, atmosphere, value Cons: expensive coffee, jazz musicians don't stay all day! more

Food great, service wonderful, but far too noisy. 7/27/2006

We had a nice Halibut dish, with an olive tampenade, with some veggies in sauce. Was supposed to have baby artichokes, but we got one tough ""adult"" choke 1/4 between us. Otherwise the food at the Heathman was great. A very interesting tasty cold boysenberry soup. Pros: Good food, great service Cons: Very noisy. more

Fantastic Fare 6/2/2006

The Heathman's restraunt and bar are fantastic... the staff are friendly, well informed, and helpful. The food is great though the portions are smaller than I'd like, but that means that you can sample a couple appetizers before your meal and not feel over full after you're done. The seard Ahi Tuna is superb. The Drinks are great and not weak like those found in other places. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Parking, Expensive more

Very Pleased 4/16/2006

A few nights after Thanksgiving we'd attended the Oregon Symphony with the new conductor- he was great. Afterwards we decided to walk through to the Heathman and grab a late supper and drinks. I hadn't been in over a year and was truly surprised with how great it was. The food was excellent and the service fantastic. We had a great time and got 11 people seated in almost no time at all. A bit pricey, but we did sample a big array of the appetizers and everyone loved the bread pudding- truly outstanding. I look forward to more evingins of the Symphony if we end up at the Heathman! more

Outstanding 3/19/2006

After many dining experiences...breakfast,lunch and dinner....we have only had one poor server experience.....we just asked to not be seated in her station and all was well from then on.We love the Heathman experience and will continue to return often. Pros: Food and $$$, Value, service Cons: Parking/issue more

Great Place, resonable price 2/16/2006

Where I take guests because I am sure that the food and service will be great. Love having no pressure to leave because we have a reservation coming. Listed as $$$, I would say more $$. Four for brunch with drinks, dessert, and tip for less than $100. My wife loves their eggs benedict (any of many styles), I the dungenes crab and cheese omlete. The lamb (in season) is excellent. Pros: Food, Service, Abiance Cons: Parking more

Sunday Breakfast-fabulous! 1/13/2006

My husband and I went for Sunday breakfast, what a treat! The waitstaff were friendly, with just the perfect mix of being there and not in the way. The food was excellent and we would defiinitely go back. Well done in Portland! more

Love the Heathman 11/16/2005

Every time I come to the Heathman, my palate is delighted throughout the entire time I am there. My friends are impressed as we dine on incredibly inventive (and delicious)food, great service and what an extensive wine selection! Thanks again the cheers to the Heathman restaurant. Pros: menu, wine, stmosphere to impress more

Rude Staff and Not Worth the Money 10/16/2005

I have been here several times over several years, and each time I try to remind myself NOT to come back (writing this review should seal the deal!)--the food is OK, but not worth the prices, the staff has repeatedly been inattentive and on more than one occasion I've had a surly wait-person. More than once I have left disappointed. Recently, I brought my 3 year old daughter (who is extremely quiet and well-behaved in restaurants) and before we were even seated the hostess ushered us into the ""cafe"" section and made us feel like second-class citizens. For a restaurant that charges so much, the experience should be pleasant. I would go to any equivalent restaurant downtown rather than visit the Heathman again. Pros: good crabcakes Cons: waitstaff/hostess, noisy more

Often Overlooked by Portland Locals 8/20/2005

After meeting the Food and Beverage manager at Taste of the Nation in Utah, I had to visit this place. When I asked my Portland friends to join me, they were reluctant because the Heathman was an ""old"" place not the newest and hippest happening. Well they were surprised and I was both pleased and impressed. It reminded me that a newcomer will venture where locals fear to tread and not to be swayed by the buzz. Pros: Elegant and pleasant, Excellent wine list, Great Cuisine more
