Best sushi in Providence. Hands down. more

Great tasting fresh sushi! 9/7/2010

This is a nice little find. The food here is very fresh and the place is very clean! They give generous portions and have a pretty extensive menu, especially since the place is not overly large. The atmosphere is quaint and modern with a Japanese flair. The staff is nice and helpful and reliable. I never have to wait long for a server or a seat. The crowd is not overly young which is nice, it's a good combination of people. I really enjoy going there and go as ofren as I can.. their prices are also quite reasonable, especially considering their portion sizes. Go see for yourself, you won't be disappointed! more

High quality Japanese food 1/6/2010

Everyone seems to only review the sushi when they review Japanese food, which is a fatal flaw. Sushi is only so much of Japanese food. The sushi here is good, but if it's all you eat, you're really, really missing out. A lot of the entrees outside of the sushi bar are delicious; the bento boxes are some of the best I've had, the yakisoba is great, and all of the donburi (rice bowls) are delicious. With regards to sushi, they also offer chutoro and otoro, the two grades of fatty tuna, which is widely regarded as the best cut. These are pretty hard to find, especially otoro. Unfortunately, last time I went, they didn't have the otoro on hand, but I did get to try to chutoro and it was godlike... Melts in your mouth. more

Good choice for sushi 11/17/2009

I went for lunch when in town for a few days. It was a Monday, and not overly crowded. I was greeted immediately by what appeared to be the manager (He had been seated at the bar). The menu was not too extensive, but varied. The freshest fish were clearly noted (""arrived today"") on a board on the wall, which was a very nice touch. Unfortunately, no one offered a description of the special maki rolls that were listed as well. The service was very quick. I had the shrimp shumai, which was delicate and well balanced. The rolls were good (Boston and Rock & Roll), as were the nigiri that I orderd (scallop and yellowtail). The price was reasonable. Overall a very nice place, one to which I would return in the future. Pros: Nice staff, good sushi more

Best sushi in RI 6/2/2007

I've eaten sushi at many high-end restaurants in NYC, Boston and SF (as well as little holes-in-the-wall across the country). Haruki East is on par with some of the better, if not best, places I've been to. The sushi is always fresh. The service is decent to excellent depending on who serves you, of course. Shala is a doll. She also knows a lot about the menu and can recommend things that aren't even listed that the chefs are happy to prepare. The King Crab hand-roll is delicious and I love the Die Hard maki. They occassionally have tiny little fried crabs that taste like 'potato chips of the sea'. Eating them can feel a bit primal. If you are in the mood for it, they are surely worth it. I recently moved to Wayland Square and this restaurant was a godsend. I've tried many other sushi establishments in RI and this has been the best one I've been to so far. Pros: Clean dining room, fresh sushi, good service Cons: Probably parking (not for me since I live nearby) more

Decent Sushi-Substandard Service-Pricey 4/10/2007

I have been to Haruki East several times. Each time the service was abominal (I subscribe to the three strike rule and H.E. is OUT). Waitstaff as per my experiences there has no personality and appears to be too busy to give anyone personal attention. I have even had a full glass of hot tea spilled on me (and a client!) by a distracted waiter who came upon our table from behind and tried to manoever the cup between two people in conversation (who were using their hands to illustrate a point). The food is good but not spectactular. The prices are higher than comparable sushi restaurants in the state. New Japan, for instance, in downtown Providence is a far better Japanese restaurant with better prices and more friendly service. I will not be returning to H.E.... more

It's good. It's busy. The decor is glamous in an 80's style. 3/30/2007

Pretty good sushi. I was overwhelmed when I went there. It was packed. A lot of locals and students from Brown. I went with a party of 3 with out reservations. We waited for 20 minutes which wasn't bad. Obviosly a popular restaurant. A little chaotic. Waitress was young and a little distracted. She was busy though. The sushi was good, meaning edible but I think a little bit bland. I love sushi so much that when I find it edible at all it's hard to criticize. I do not consider Grocery store sushi edible by the way. Although maybe the ones at whole foods are barely edible. Pros: it's sushi that's a pro in itself Cons: ambience is a bit busy and distracting. it's noisy. good if you're with loud people. more

best sushi in providence 11/17/2006

this is everything you could want from a sushi place, short of going to japan. it has an elegent interior, nice seating with some little alcoves, larger tables and a sushi bar. the sushi itself is better than any i've had in RI. and the prices were very reasonable. we even watched a very rude couple complain about something that was cleary their fault, and the waitress didn't even blink, but apologized and brought out an entirely different meal. i was really impressed with the service. Pros: best sushi, great service, atmosphere more

Not as good as I hoped 4/13/2006

Don't trust the other reviews; this place is ok at best. I've tasted sushi in Japan, or in the U.S. at some of the best places in L.A., Seattle and Boston, and this place doesn't compare. The pieces were small and not very tasty/fresh. The spicy tuna rolls where just regular tuna rolls with some spicy mayo on top! Ridiculous... more

Best Sushi in the State 9/20/2004

This is hands down the best sushi place in Rhode Island and beats many of the restaurants in Boston (including the popular Mr.Sushi). The sushi pieces are huge and always fresh. It's not very innovative but there is a great selection. Sushi lovers will not be disappointed. more
