Great casual, authentic Japanese tapas spot 7/11/2009

We love Haru Ulala. They have great ""tapas:"" Japanese style, the coldest draft beer in town, and fresh ingredients. Order the baked potato, the Spanish mackrel, the uni, the grilled garlic, tempura lotus root, and the fried squid lips. We have visited numerous times and we consider it a sure thing. Better Izakaya Restaurants Out There 5/23/2008

Not impressed at all. You're better off at Musha and even Honda-ya. The fact that they have alot of rolls on their menu shows that they cater to crowd that well, isn't really there for true Japanese bar food. Don't bother trying this place unless you really like to eat california rolls along with yakitori. Pros: WIde selection of food Cons: Quality not so great more

They have a nice quality of small appitizer that can be very tasty that will match with any kinds of beer(s) you drink. Just try it and you will know the difference between a meal and tapas. more

Great Japanese tapas! 9/21/2007

I've gone to this place with large groups many times, and the only talking we do is ""mmm""s between sake sips and food bites. If you have problems choosing what to eat, this is the place to go. You can get anything fried garlic, fried camembert, sushi, ribs, miso. It's all good! The best dish isn't even on the menu--okonomyaki. It's almost like a little pie, very rich, and they'll even make it vegetarian for you! The only danger is getting too many little dishes and spending a lot of money. Pros: Okonomyaki, everything Cons: Can accidentally spend a lot more

We went to Haru Ulala and just started ordering random things off the menu. Half the time we we're even sure which item we were eating, but it was all delicious! The highlight of the meal was the potato in miso ... and the fried cheese was a nice suprise too. It was great to eat Japanese cuisine that WAS NOT sushi; though they also have the sushi for all you sushi obsessed! Pros: Service, price, variety more

If you think Japanese food only means sushi, think again! Izakaya is a great alternative. Don't get me wrong, I love good sushi (and I eat it all) but these little plates are to die for. This is a really nice, down to earth place to meet up with friends too. Lots of fried and steamed veggies, seafood (like marinated black cod and tuna collar, king crab, etc.), and other fun things to try. more

Excellent choice for small group gathering 5/9/2006

It was Mon. night in Little Tokyo and Hamakawa was closed, so our group of six went around the corner to Izakaya Haru Ulala based on a few good reviews here on CitySearch. We loved it! The sushi and sashimi were very good -- maguro and salmon were fresh and in generous portions. Salmon in miso, grilled hamachi, grilled short rib, and steamed clams were outstanding small plates. A couple of pitchers of Kirin draft ($10 each) and a few bottles of sake and we were in heaven. Service was fast and friendly. One person in our group ended up liking this place better than Hamakawa, which is quite a testament. We will definitely return in the future! Great authentic Izakaya! 10/26/2005

Haru Ulala is just like the Izakayas I've been to in Japan. So many different small dishes to choose from. The grilled oysters are tasty. Fresh sashimi. I love the skewered items. went here for the first time tonight and was very pleasantly surprised. the food was great. the menu was really extensive and had something for everyone. my mother is japanese and very picky about her food-- she loved this place! we agreed that we had to take my dad here, too, for the great draft beer. the service was really friendly as well. portions are small (as one would expect with tapas-style food) so don't be shy about ordering lots of stuff. the price is very reasonable. the atmosphere is nothing special, but a great place to bring friends and family for a casual night out.
