Worst

Hama needs to get real with its prices. Seriously. Some sushi, a beer, and a glass of wine = $85. That's nuts. I mean it's not like we are dining on the french riveria over l...

A hidden gem in plain site!! 7/9/2007

Hama's, as my entire family refers to it as - is the best sushi around. I'm not sure how others have been able to comment that the sushi wasn't great, because I've been to many - many sushi restaurants from Downtown to Santa Monica and up and down the coast...and this is where I wind up every time. I go about once a week to enjoy the sushi and the atmosphere. The chefs are prompt, courteous, funny as all heck and the 60s - 70s music adds the perfect touch to this ultimate Venice hot spot. Even though it's in plain site, it's a hidden gem. Never miss the yellowtail, peppered salmon, and red snapper with lemon juice, zest of lime and a hint of salt. You can be creative too and try the Venice Roll, or one of the other awesome creations they have to offer (Tuna Tartare on wonton crisps!). However, if you want the ultimate, sit at the sushi bar, tell the chef what you like and don't like - and then let them lead the way....you will not be disappointed. Don't forget to get some Sapporo and Sake too! The fish is fresh - always, the staff if at your service, and the atmosphere takes you to a decade you missed, or want to reminisce with. Nobu may compete...but Hama's will have you coming back for more - more often! Pros: Sushi!! Ambience - surfer movies in the bar, and service. more

Fun place with great food 6/12/2007

I have been coming to this place for about two years, and I really like this place. Hostesses, waitresses and guests are hot and friendly and they provide excellent services. Their food is great also. Try their chilean Sea Bass, Hamachi carpaccio, Spicy crunchy crab roll, and lobster dynamite. Their soju mix drink are good also. The atmosphere is very casual and just fun to be in this place. You should go to this place if you have not been yet. Pros: people, service, food more

Smokin' Good Sushi 6/11/2007

I love this place. I ate here for the first time back in December and now I'm a regular. The staff is smokin' hot and the sushi is smokin' good. I love the surf video's on the walls. From the outside it's a bit deceiving but once inside you find the place filled with surfers and business people alike. And the women . . . wow. (there are some goodlooking guys also for you ladies) Inside is like two completely different places . . . one side . . . what they call the inside . . . is traditional sushi bar and the outside (which is a covered patio with a long bar and plenty of heaters) is trendy and fun. If you live in Venice you already go to Hama . . . if you visit Venice I strongly recommend you go to Hama. It's the best Sushi with the most fun Atmosphere in all of Los Angeles. Pros: Service, sushi, atmosphere, people Cons: none more

Fantastic sashimi 4/24/2007

This place is seriously good, seriously good sashimi, sushi, soft shell crab. The beers are long and cold, and some great ambience as well. more

Wow, what a disappointment 4/19/2007

I'm not normally one to write a bad review. However, it's been a few years since I've been to Hama and decided to give it another try. Pros: It's by the beach Cons: Poor service, sushi isn't that good. more

SoCal Sushi Spot on 3/7/2007

The sushi is good, not great. The BBQ Tuna is amazing. The location can't be beat, but the best thing about this joint is the people. The waitstaff, hostess and guests are hothothot. Casual is definitely the callword, but this place is what Northeasterners dream that California is. The noise level could be controlled with a lowering of the music, but the vibe is definitely cool, with beautiful ladies, delicious food, a very nice sake selection and reasonable prices Hama is a place I'll be coming back to again and again. Pros: Gorgeous Girls, Good Food, Valet- but this IS LA Cons: Noisy, Too many tables more

best sushi around 1/12/2007

Great sushi, great surfing videos. Got some solid happy hour specials too. Check out the specials, I had the most wonderful lamb shanks in the world. Pros: great consistent food Cons: a bit pricey to do regularly more

by far the best sushi on the westside 12/11/2006

this place is perfect: it has a great casual vibe (venice style), the servers are all really cool, and the sushi is significantly better than any other place we've been in LA (nozawa aside). my wife and i eat here at least five times a month and i bring co-workers here often. more

Fun atmosphere 11/1/2006

This is an easy-going sushi place where you can get some good fish. A good date place where you can relax and talk about the videos playing on the walls and the unique decorations. They don't take reservations so you might have to wait a bit. more

Unassuming Outside But A Hotspot Inside! 10/2/2006

I found the layout a little weird, as when you walk in, it looks like a bar/club. If you turn left, though, you'll enter the main sushi room, which looks like the typical low-profile sushi joint. We requested the sushi bar, and the server asked to please not leave vacant seats between us and other patrons as the place fills up quickly--- he wasn't kidding. As soon as 8pm came, the place was filled to capacity (about 50), and it can get really loud (people chatting, piped in techno music, shouting sushi chefs), but it all makes for the fun atmosphere. I love uni and ikura, and theirs was just amazing! The uni was so creamy & sweet, while the ikura was just so delicious. I tried some of their more creative rolls (eel w/ strawberry?), but I suggest you stick to basics. Just a little surprised that it ain't as cheap as it looks. At other unpretentious sushi spots, what we usually spend $60 or $70 on, we spent $110 here. But it's all good since the chefs were nice, the food was good and the crowd was fun. Try looking for street parking as opposed to the $4 or $5 valet. Pros: perfect uni & ikura, fun atmosphere more

Freshest and Highest quality sushi in West LA!! 8/21/2006

Hama's a true local Venice restaurant. Cool ""outside"" patio which has new, and updated canopies. A great place to go alone, with friends or to meet new ones. The chefs are awesome and really know what they're doing. To go menu is extensive and so is the sake list! Had a huge dinner party there (over 50 people) and they accomodated us very well. If you want a taste of Venice Beach, CA then don't miss Hama. I think it's been there over 25 years. Pros: Top quality sushi, customer service, ambience more

Overpriced but open late 7/14/2006

Surfers and Venice professionals gather for sushi and drinks at this boisterious establishment. There's a wide menu to choose from and the sushi itself is quite good - not the best in the city, but certainly pleasant to consume. Bottom line though: overpriced. At the volume of business this place does, and with a bar as well, there's no need for prices this high. Pros: Open late (by LA standards) Cons: Loud, overpriced more

Professionalism behind a cool scene 5/19/2006

This place always welcoming you with smile and good sense of humor. The salmon sashimi always fresh and melting in your mouth, like a piece of butter. Try the amazing toro and asked the chefs for one more round of sake. Hama sushi is a cool, laid back place with energetic ambience and with quality food. The stuff is nice and helpful, owner walk around and asks what else he/she could do for you to make your visit more satisfied. That is why Hama Sushi is the place you will go back and back and backagain. Pros: always fresh fish, fun ambience, friendly Cons: hard to find more

Best overall sushi I've had in SM/Venice 5/7/2006

Good overall sushi in a lively place with an intersting crowd. Great place for a date or to meet up with friends. This place gets busy, which is great for sushi as it means things are turning over fast. If you live in the neighborhood, this will end up being your go-to sushi spot. Pros: Big menu, Lively atmosphere, Fun sushi bar Cons: Crowded more

Yum! 1/4/2005

I am not even a big sushi fan, but I like the tempura and the beef teriyaki the best of anyplace I've eaten, and most of my friends would eat sushi at least once a day, I spend a lot of time in sushi places. I always wind up trying some of the rolls here, and I have found them to be superior to almost anything I've had elsewhere. The staff is friendly, the wait can be long, but the bar is fun, and sitting outside is so relaxing! more

Best Atmosphere in LA 2/18/2003

Hang by the bar, wear some cutoffs, and enjoy some of the best sushi in LA. Not THE best, but fabulous value and great beach atmosphere. Wait until 10:30 to hear the chefs sing their closing song. Try the cold sake! Pros: atmosphere, location, sake more

great sushi 1 block from the beach 9/13/2002

Love it! Great food! Fun to stop by after work with a friend and relax in patio...not cheap though! more
