Good coffee 4/12/2012

Gypsy Den is a very nice cafe in Costa Mesa that is great for coffee and some baked goods. I don?t recommend their food because it?s very average. They are usually understaffed and service is really slow so if you?re hungry and want something to eat you will be hungry for a while. You will have to seat yourself by the way. The best time to come here is during breakfast hours. more

Nice atmosphere, but... 4/27/2010

I've been here on a couple of occasions, mostly for the atmosphere. The coffee is good, and the food is okay, but there's not a lot of selection because the kitchen is small. The most recent time I went here, I found that my credit card was overcharged. After talking to them about it, I was told they'd look into it and get back from me. It's been a couple of months now, and I never did get my money back. If you really want to go here, I suggest paying cash. Pros: Decent food, good coffee, great atmosphere Cons: Limited menu, dishonest? more

Happy hippie haven. 1/25/2008

I like this place a lot, it's adorable. Very cozy with a bit of a hippie vibe. It's next to an Urban Outfitters (always a plus) and has great, healthy food for very reasonable prices. I have to be honest though - the service is pretty bad...they always seem short-staffed and therefore slow, which can be frustrating. Nevertheless though, the few employees there are very friendly. It's a great place to go for a cup of coffee or tea/dessert. more

Service? 3/4/2007

I honestly don't know why I go into Gypsy Den as often as I do. The service is atrocious; the baristas have a very uninterested attitude and tend to ignore anyone at the counter for several minutes at a time. They also don't seem to care very much about the quality of the food. It is all very average, almost as if it's come out of a box or can. I can admit that the coffee drinks are good though and that is probably the only reason I can think of to go in there. Well, the decor is interesting and the people watching is nice to, if you are going to shop at urban, on a quick lunch break or waiting for a table at one of the nice restaurants nearby it's cool to pop in for a coffee but expect to wait about thirty minutes for it. Pros: Coffee and people watching Cons: Sevice more

Great local hang out with yummy healthy food 12/21/2006

The Gypsy Den is one of my favorite restaurants in OC. I go several times a month for lunch/dinner and very often for their great Vanilla Chai Tea. The menu features mostly vegetarian cuisine, but my meat eater friends like it too! They usually have great service and good people watching out on the patio. Some kind of cutting edge mellow music is usually playing and there is sometimes performers or DJ's spinning melow music inside as well. The Chicken-Salad, Quiche, Baked Potato, Soups, and all salads are excellent. Did I mention the VANILLA CHAI??? Pros: great helathy foos and good people watching Cons: mostly vegetarian options more

Goof Sandwich/Salad Place 8/21/2006

Parking at the LAB is tough, but if you are lucky enough to get a spot, the Gypsey Den is a good, cheap place to go to grab a salad or sandwich. The inside is sort of Boho, but heck, all the folks there are too (or alternative, or emo, or whatever they call it these days) and frankly, I like the change of atmosphere and people. Service is slow because they usually only have two waiters for the whole place. To be more specific: the food comes out of the kitchen quick, but drink your water slowly, because you won't get more. That isnt to say our waiter wasnt amazingly nice, though--he was great, just had too many tables. My favorite thing there is the Cranberry-Apple Salad, served with candied walnuts and goat cheese--the salads are huge. They also have casserole sized dises full of apple crisp and peach cobler, which look amazing. A good place to go and get coffee or chai later in the evening, too. Pros: Good Food, Different Atmosphere, Friendly Service Cons: Slowish Service, Often Busy more

Best spot for lunch and people watching 8/2/2006

The Lab is a great people watching location and the Gypsy Den is a great perch to do it from. The sandwiches are incredible, served on their freshly baked bread (I think they bake it daily?) Also their vegetarian chili is by far the best I've ever tasted and I challenge any meat eater to dig into some and tell me that they can honestly tell there is no meat in it. Pros: Great sandwiches Cons: Kitschy interior is a little too bohemian for my taste... more

40 minutes for a sandwich? 3/23/2005

I've been to this place about once a month for the last year. The food is good and the prices are reasonable, but the service is atrocious. Every time I've been there it has taken at least 30 minutes to get my food after ordering. I'd understand if they were sauteeing filet mignon, but it's just sandwiches and salads! Maybe it's because the someone else other than the waitress always brings the food. Whatever it is, they need to fix it. I won't be going here again until they do. Pros: cheap, good food Cons: , lousy service more
