Great for the pretentious and there seems to be a lot of them buying at this place, just walk by a few of them when you visit. I though this would be different than the Chapel Hil...

German Bakery/Cafe at it's finest! 5/8/2008

Guglhupf's bakery is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! Gorgeous pastries, tempting breads, and tasty bretzels. \r \r If you can, go early in the day, by late afternoon, the selection is often very small, especially on Sundays after 2pm.\r \r In the cafe, they have yummy sandwiches and soups! check the LCD screen for daily specials. If you like cucumbers at all, get the cucumber salad. Another favorite is the bratwurst on bretzel sub with saurkraut.\r \r Be aware, it's very crowded at lunch, and around noon on weekends. \r \r Sunday brunch menu is tasty! if you've got more than 2 people, go ahead and get a brunch bread basket, as well, it'll get eaten! Pros: super tasty food, made by people who care Cons: sometimes difficult to get a seat, can be crowded when it's nice outside, inside seating is loud. more

Delicious! 4/7/2008

I cannot say enough good things about Guglhupf. Their breakfasts are great and so are their lunches. I don't even know where to start with the bakery items. I'm not a huge fan of pastries or breads, but when I walk in there, I can't help myself. I want to try one of everything. It's a great atmosphere and a beautiful space for lunch with some friends or colleagues. You won't be disappointed. Pros: Delicious food! Cons: Somewhat confusing ordering/cashier line. more

Had high hopes... 10/6/2007

I am new to the area and was really excited to try this place because I love good European style breads. I admit I am a total bread snob and I look for the best bakery everywhere I go. I thought Guglhupf was disappointing. I first tried a baguette and a croissant, thinking those should be good basic representations. The baguette was too fluffy - nothing special at all. The croissant tasted good, but was really greasy. Then, I figured, it's a German bakery, so why was I getting French stuff? So I went back and got brezels and rolls. Eh. Still not that exciting. It's a cute place, with a nice outdoor area, and maybe the food and pastries are good, but to me a good European style bakery's got to have a great baguette. Still searching.... more

Long lines, good food 10/2/2007

Be prepared to stand in line for a while, but it is almost always worth it. Guglhupf operates a cafeteria-style dining room with great sandwiches, salads, etc. I appreciate the fact that they serve reasonable portions, rather than dumping pounds of food on my plate, particularly because that means I usually have room for dessert. Their chocolate and apple tarts are wonderful. more

A positively wonderful / relaxing experience 3/29/2007

I took my father-in-law to this place. My mother-in-law heard about it in a magazine up in PA. My father-in-law was impressed as was I. The food was absolutely out of this world. The atmosphere is extremely comfortable and inviting. The kind of place you can just 'linger' in. Have some lunch... sit a while and finish up with some dessert. I will definately be back and can't wait to treat my husband to this 'rare' find! He has been looking for a good rueben and know I know just where to get it! My father-in-law had the schnitzel and found it to be of the best quality he has ever had. I had the BEST turkey sandwich ever. The bread was wonderful and the cucumbers were a nice touch to the sandwich. We also had dessert, I'm clueless as to what it was other than it was shaped like a shrimp (only larger) or half moon and covered by almonds. Each end was dipped in chocolate. It was very light yet sinfully good. I will definately be back and soon! Pros: The Ambience and food are well worth any of the Cons. Cons: Finding the place was a little difficult but well worth the hunt! more

Wonderful doesn't begin to describe this bakery! 9/10/2006

We love to have breakfast here. Come for a leisurely patio meal and read your paper over sumptious fruit tarts, fresh baked earthy, dense breads, and a delicious cup of coffee. Come early because the only negative about this delightful place is that all of the goodies run start running out by lunchtime! more

AWESOME 6/20/2006

After spending two years living in Germany it didn't take me long to start searching for a European bakery once I moved back to the Triangle. This place is awesome and takes me back to Europe with every taste. Everything is made fresh every morning, so it is best to arrive early before the selection is gone. There are few places... 2/10/2006

...That I insist on bringing out of towners. This is one of them. The pastries are immaculate. To be honest, I'm not as huge a fan of the breads (though their denser, whole grain varieties are very good). The service can be painfully slow at times, but that's about it. Delicious! 11/9/2005

After walking into the bakery I knew I was in for a great experience. The first time I went I bought a dozen different delicious treats and was happy with each and every one of them. So, when the time came for me to pick out a wedding cake they were at the top of my list. The wedding cake was a little untraditional, but the best wedding cake I have ever had. amazing quality for the money 10/26/2005

This has become our favorite place to grab lunch on the weekend. The quality of the food is extremely high for the money, and they have a great German beer (Franziskaner Weissbier) on tap along with a great selection of coffees and teas. Highly recommended! Go in person--don't order in advance 5/8/2005

We had been huge fans of Guglhupf until we ordered in advance. Twice, our orders were lost or forgotten. The first time, the item we ordered was in stock so it was no big deal. The second time, my wife's birthday cake simply wasn't made and the bakers had gone home for the day. Bad news! The third time, the cake we ordered tasted 3 days old. The man who always seems to be there when I've bought pastries has always been right on the money with his recommendations. Try the fruit tarts-they are fabulous. Definitely the best pastries in the triangle and worth the trip from Wake Forest. Pros: Great options, Very fresh, helpful staff more

Hidden Secret 2/15/2004

Once you finally find Guglhupf you'll never forget where it is! It's ""hidden"" off 15-501, and there is not much if any of a sit down atmosphere until the finish the outside cafe area. Try a variety of breads and pastries...you can't go wrong. I recommend the bretzels...yum! Pros: Unique, Very tasty!, Great food!!!!! Cons: , Tiny space, Hard to find more

Quite possibly the best pastries and breads this side of the Atlantic. The ciabatta with Kalamata olives is out of this world, and the croissants melt in your mouth. I have been consistently impressed with the quality and selection. I'm new to the Triangle area and was happy to find a slice of Europe so close to home....especially when that ""slice"" is from a fresh-baked baguette! Pros: friendly staff Cons: hard to find more

This premier German bakery has the freshest, most delicious pastries and breads in the Triangle. The staff is friendly and hospitable. This is North Carolina's best-kept secret...but perhaps not for long, as work is underway on a full sit-down cafe. Don't be fooled by tasteless so-called ""artisan breads"" at your local chain grocery store. This is the real thing! U don't know what bread is... 9/5/2002

..until you've had European-style baked goods. At least that was true for me. Until I traveled to Germany years ago, I had no idea what breads and pastries could be. Guglhupf creates incredible sweet pastries. The danish twist is my favorite, but I also love the interesting combinations of sweet, soft cheeses and fruits (kiwi even)! The croissants are exquisite - though a little too buttery (if that's possible) sometimes. Other breads are hearty, fresh, and melt in your mouth. **UPDATE - as of 8/26/02 they are adding on to the building. Prob. for inside seating! Pros: One word: pastries Cons: pastries disappear! more
