mmm..German pastries 4/15/2006

The first time I came here was for German class in high school (we had to order in German), and am glad of it. They have very unique pastries and food - good for anyone with a sweet tooth. Everything is very fresh, including their coffees. It's definitely a place you want to check out...if only to figure out how to pronounce the name correctly! more

Unique Gem 4/11/2006

Guglhupf is a very unique place. The bakery is excellent, especially the bretzels. The restaurant part is nice also. My favorite thing is soup with a bretzel. I haven't tried their made to order pies or cakes, but I hear they are just as delicious as the rest of the food! more

Gugawhat 4/6/2006

Guglhupf is a wonderful cafe in Durham. The food is always great, and the coffee and chai are top notch. I love how they give you a little shortbread biscuit with your hot drinks. The bakery produces some amazing stuff. Unfortunately, there are a few downsides -- the staff is not always as friendly or as quick as they could be and they don't have free refills on coffee (just a pet peeve of mine that you have to pay extra for refills). But sitting outside on the patio enjoying the $2 bread basket on a weekend morning is fantastic...we actually head here instead of Foster's some mornings... more

delicious 3/17/2006

great food, baked goods and coffee. Also a nice space to study, I love their pretzels (but you might want to get there earlier in the day for these; I've been disappointed a few times when they've run out) and linzer cookies (regular and chocolate-coated)! The only drawback is that the parking lot is sometimes quite crowded, and the asian market next door doesn't seem to like bakery patrons using their (large and empty) lot. more

Delectable 12/1/2005

I love this bakery! Their breads are incredible. There are many different types to choose from ranging from simple breads to artisan types. It's always busy during the holidays as orders pour in. I always forget to so I wait in a long line. As I wait in line there are people from Raleigh and Cary that travel there to get their baked goods. Besides their breads, they have great pastries and cakes. As their namesake cake, it is a great cake to serve during the holidays. Not too sweet and not to heavy. All their other little pastries and goodies are wonderful. I can't remember all the names of them but whether fruity or chocolaty they have what you are craving for. They also have a cafe they've added to their bakery. Great place to meet with someone and shoot the breeze. Nice outdoor area (on the nice days) to eat your lunch or sip on cafe's or tea. Oh, the breads..regardless of which one you get, can make great bread pudding and is healthier since they use whole grains and seeds and nuts. Tasty! more

Go early! 9/11/2005

I love Guglhupf, and I usually force myself out of bed early a couple of Saturdays a month in order to go there. You have to get up early to get your pick of their delicious items their on Saturdays--if you wait too late, they've sold out of the best stuff and the lines are unbelievable! The best cakes and cream puffs I've ever had, and the doughnuts are awesome! Go there today! more

Guglhupf 9/4/2005

Great everything. The cakes around Christmas are fantastic. Also, the jelly doughnuts they have are the best I've ever had, with real sugar and real bread, instead of the fake Krispy-Kreme kind. They were once on Food Network for their... fruit stollen, I think. An awesome bakery. Authentic to Durham, NC. more

Bakery Nirvana 9/3/2005

You have not lived until you eat a Guglhupf cream puff. Light as a feather, crispy and sweet, filled with the most delicious whipped cream that smooshes out the side when you take a bite. It truly is the closest to heaven one can find on earth! Whether you're looking for fresh-baked breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, or a nice place to have lunch, there is nowhere else but Guglhupf. Steeped in old-world traditions, you'll feel like you're back in Germany at a small local bakery. The name may be intimidating for first-timers (say GOO-gull-hoopf), but once you taste their delicious food, you'll definitely come back. If you go on a Saturday, make sure to arrive early and be prepared to stand in line - by early afternoon they've often sold-out of most items. more

The best bakery around! 9/2/2005

The first time that I passed this bakery I stopped just because I was intrigued by the name. I consider that day very lucky, for now I make many intentional visits here. This bakery is superb and the café is great as well. I personally prefer the baked goods over the soups and sandwiches, but that could be due to my sweet tooth as well. A definite must if you like baked goods! more

Hidden Treat off Business 15-501 8/25/2005

Blink and you'll pass by this inauspicious bakery on highway 15-501 south (it's next to the Asian Market). After tasting the pastries that my co-workers brought in, I vowed to visit the place myself. Wow, bakery display cases are sooooo pretty and filled with tempting treats. My friend and I decided on the fruit tart and some sort of pudding dish. They were giving out samples of their "bretzels" (pretzel-like bread) and they were delicious. As we were taking our goodies back to the car, we noticed there was another building adjacent, which turned out to be a full service cafe. How wonderful! We ordered coffees as well. Then we went and sat outside. The desserts were great and not too sweet (my personal preference). Guglhupf has been likened to an "old world" bakery. I wouldn't know the difference, as long as there is fresh bread and pastries for me to devour. Give it a try; that is, if you can find it. more

Guglhupf 8/23/2005

Great pastries, probably the best in the Triangle. The chocolate and almond croissants are melt-in-your-mouth delicious, while the regular ones can be a little too buttery at times. Fantastic filled pastries (cherry and cheese is especially tasty!) and breads, muffins, tarts... Come early for the best selection. They also operate a little café right next to the bakery with a lovely--and light--breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu and great espresso drinks. more

A bakery and so much more 8/23/2005

For a long time no one knew much about Guglhupf except it had a crazy name. Slowly it has evolved from being a tucked away bakery to a full service cafe and bakery. Their baked goods are hands down the best in the area. Their cafe that opened up this past year is even better than expected. The menu has a wide variety of offerings to satisfy everyone. There are light meals such as a bread basket or warm sandwiches and soup. The cafe and the bakery are separate, which is great so you don't have to wait in one line for the other. more

great bakery 8/17/2005

My wife and I used Guglhupf for our wedding cake last month. It was absolutely delicious (raspberry mousse) and all the guests loved it. It was also much cheaper than any other wedding cake quote we'd seen. This place is popular in Durham for brunch and dessert - lots of people there on weekends. Plenty of excellent pastries to be had. more

U don't know what bread is... 8/4/2005

..until you've had European-style baked goods. At least that was true for me. Until I traveled to Germany years ago, I had no idea what breads and pastries could be. Guglhupf creates incredible sweet pastries. The danish twist is my favorite, but I also love the interesting combinations of sweet, soft cheeses and fruits (kiwi even)! The croissants are exquisite - though a little too buttery (if that's possible) sometimes. Other breads are hearty, fresh, and melt in your mouth. more
