The entertainment was good, but too loud to yell into the ear of the person sitting next to you. The food was good, but the staff was horrible. Waiting for every little thing ma...

Holy Mole! 5/20/2002

One bite and I'm hooked. I tried the black mole chicken and it was absolutely delicious. My friend ordered the pork in the red mole sauce. Again, very delicious. Even the chips they serve before the meal have a special twist (they're topped with light sauce and bits of cheese). It's a good mix of people: singles, couples, families, everyone. They speak minimal English, but I found it a fun place to practice my minimal Spanish. I heard a rumor that they had fried grasshoppers of some sort, but I didn't see any on the menu. My only regret is that I didn't know you could BYOB. Next time. Pros: incredible food, great service Cons: parking problematic, not the best area more

i love the food here. the sweet/spicey red mole sauce is the surprise of the year for me. i'm familiar with the black moles of ""traditional"" mexican food and was surprised with the twist that this southern mexican joint puts on it. the closest thing i can compare it to is jerk spice of jamaican fare, but with a south of the border inflection. don't go expecting burritos and tacos. you'll have to like at least chicken to eat anything of substance here as they specialize in all things meat. the chicken in red mole is excellent. order their version of horchata or their version of orange juice. very tasty all around and quite surprising. Pros: red mole, orange drink Cons: slow service smtimes more

Holy Mole 5/16/2002

Guelaguetza is the Zapotec word for ""offering,"" and the mole sauces could only be the result of culinary devotion. The sauces are authentic -- especially the classic (chocolate) mole negro. These are good: the corn tortilla with bean paste and cheese, the salted beef rounds with mushrooms and onion, the tamales, and the cactus salad. Pros: selection Cons: no cons more

The real thing 5/13/2002

Don't go expecting more than just a great meal. If you do, you're guaranteed to be impressed. But be warned -- no alcohol is served though you are welcomed to bring your own. And if your Spanish speaking skills aren't polished -- requests beyond basic ordering may be a problem. But if you know this and come prepared, be ready to enjoy some of the best, true Oaxacan dishes in LA. Pros: great food, great prices Cons: no alcohol served more

REAL Mexican Food 5/8/2002

Forget Taco Bell, El Cholo and all those other places that serve Tex Mex. Guelaguetza serves real Mexican food; Moles, Pasole, Tamales, etc. Be sure to get the Horchata, they top the regular rice milk with cactus fruit, crushed nuts, and sweet juice. Delicious! Pros: Excellent Food Cons: So-So Neighborhood more
