Best

you will be able to experience a lot of flavors when you eat at Guelaguetza and all of them delightful.

Worst

The entertainment was good, but too loud to yell into the ear of the person sitting next to you. The food was good, but the staff was horrible. Waiting for every little thing ma...

Great food, decent ambience 2/4/2006

I can see how other reviewers might not love the decor, but it reminded me of a little Italian trattoria in the sense that the service was extremely friendly and wait staff highly knowledgeable (dare I say passionate!?) about their food, the tables were cute with loud checkerboard patterns, and the food was extraordinary. Now, obviously, this is Mexican and not Italian food, but you get the idea. The tamal in banana leaf (about $5.50 when I went - great value!)with black mole was extraordinary, the horchata was great (with little bits of nut and fruit in it), and even the chips and salsa with cheese and red mole was the best free appetizer I've had in LA! I definitely have to go back to try some other items on the menu, and I highly recommend the BYOB - no corkage fees, are you kidding? Where else will that happen? Pros: food, service, value more

Not THAT good 8/27/2005

The mole is quite good here but I don't think it's worth the drive to K town for the food. The ambience is really dismal, it's like a high school cafeteria. It's great if you have a huge crowd coming into town but that is the only time I would recommend this restaurant. more

Grasshoppers Please! 6/13/2005

Yes! without a doubt the Mole is da bomb. I've had many kinds of restaurant mole before and I've had the best home-made mole, but this place's mole rocks! Truly authentic flavors. They put a lot o' love in the food. Awesome ambiance, excellent live music and dancing, and just great authentic Mexican food. No grated cheddar chese here. Only the real deal. But what I don't understand is why hasn't anyone mentioned the roasted Grasshopper appertizer served with avacado, onion, and tomato? Or the roasted Grasshopper empanadas? I'm not really a fan of insect cuisine or anything but it was kind of an adventure to have them and they're tasty. Live life and eat like a Oaxacan. more

The service is excellent and you really only need a months worth of HS Spanish to get by. Quiero blank con blank y no blank. A cool place for special occasions. more

THIS PLACE ROCKS!!! 5/30/2005

Being a Latina, I am a devout crusader of authentic Mexican food and this place has garnered my highest praise for the best mole outside of Oaxaca. The chicken in mole coloradito is my absolute favorite. The sauce is at once unctuous yet delicate, comforting in its inherent richness of complex flavors. (If you are a true purist, you'll appreciate that they serve dark meat on the bone.) I come here often with friends, toting an igloo full of sangria (BYOB) and we always leave with a blissed out expression of utter appreciation and gratitude for yet another amazing meal. And don't forget to oder the taquitos too! Delicioso! Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly staff, Casual Atmosphere more

"AUTHENTIC MEXICAN" Restaurant 5/16/2005

Untainted by modern "fast food, overprocessed, americanization" , maintaining it's flavor of original mexican recipes. It is not for vegetarians, being that the majority of mexican recipes are not meant to be vegetarian. This is not a fast food restaurant, which is what gives it its HOME-LIKE feeling/ambiance, so prepare to actually wait for your meal to be COOKED! The owners and staff are mexican/oaxacan; therefore, brush up on your spanish. This is a place to sit down, RELAX , and TRULY enjoy your meal. Pros: AUTHENTIC, Prices are Reasonable more

Don't judge by the outside 3/19/2005

This restaurant doesn't look great from the outside. It's a Mexican Restaurant with Chinese Architecture. The treasure is inside, when they serve the food! I know a good number of Mexican restaurants nationwide. I can tell you they have the BEST MOLE in al U.S.!! They have both styles (Brown/Red). Tip, order water of Horchata. They add some concentrate from other Mexican fruit and pieces of pecans. Very unique flavors! Pros: Taste, Quality more

Amazing Mole 7/23/2004

I read the reviews and thought I'd be in for a good meal. It was amazing. I have had different versions of the mole negro, but this mole negro was fantastic. There was just a hint of sweetness and a very rich taste of a blend of spices. Now I have to go back and try all the different moles on the menu! I really enjoyed their horchata. Very different twist. Excellent, excellent. My only problem was the dessert. I ordered the fried plantains, and it wasn't very tasty. I could have done better at home. It tasted like oily bananas with strawberry pancake syrup with whipped cream on top. Better to stick with the mole instead. Forget dessert! Pros: fantastic mole, great horchata, friendly wait staff Cons: , limited parking, must speak Spanish more

This is some FANTASTIC oaxacan food. Moles and more. In a converted warehouse, with live music and a lively crowd, the food is authentic and incredibly tasty. Great homemade tortillas too. more

A Oaxacan Delight... 5/23/2004

La Gelaguetza, located in Mid-Wilshire/Koreatown just off of 8th and Irolo (Normandie), is a definite "diamond in the rough." The friendly restaurant staff and hearty atmosphere accompanied along with the rich aroma of authentic Oaxacan cuisine, this "diamond in the rough" is not to be missed. more

Mole! 7/5/2003

artha Stewart had Guelaguetza on her TV show as one of the best places to eat mole in Los Angeles, so I went expecting ""good"" mole, but nothing close to what I get at moms. What I got was awesome & came awfully close! Their moles are authentic & delicious, and they even have a small shop at the entrance where you can buy a variety of the food items they serve in the restaurant. If youre looking to try authentic Oaxacan food at really good prices I highly recommend this place. more
