Excellent Buffet, with a few tiny corrections 5/15/2012

We visited Bernardo's for the "Mother's Day" buffet, and found it to be "over-the-top" excellent. The variety of seafood, beef, turkey, vegetables, omelettes, pastas, and desserts was almost overwhelming. There are two things that do need improving; the boiled, peeled shrimp had no flavor, and were not cooked enough. They need to boil them with some crab boil seasoning and cook them a tad bit longer. However, I loved the snow crab claws and legs; they were fantastic. Also, our table was very wobbly. The atmosphere was wonderful, but a few of the tables need to be replaced. (We sat at table #128, a round table.) But for the atmoshpere, service, and huge variety of food offerings, Bernardo's gains my vote for Best of the Best Sunday Brunches. Gazing at the Gulf while dining in a historic landmark with excellent food, is very hard to beat. Pros: null Cons: null more

Very Nice 3/17/2010

Very nice. I would go back to Galvez but if I could change those big beautiful windows into ones that opened that would be great. Also rooms are just okay for the money; not spectacular. Pool area, lounge and staff are all great. Pros: Location, pool area, staff Cons: Nothing special rooms, windows do not open more

love this hotel! 7/15/2008

I loved this hotel! Galveston is one of my favorite getaway spots, and the Hotel Galvez is one of the nicest hotels in the area. I would definitely come back to this hotel- the spa was incredible! My room was clean, and it was nice to have wireless internet access. The pool area was where I spent most of my time though. The bartender?s were friendly and it was nice to have a swim-up bar. I will be going back to the Hotel Galvez soon! Pros: Beautiful, clean, great location in Galveston more

Check your bill carefully 5/24/2008

The architectural splendors of the Galvez Hotel are fabulous. Unfortunately one can't eat the architecture. My waiter's appearance and demeanor almost made me mistake him for a busboy. Service was glacial even though there were only two tables occupied in the entire restaurant. The food was OK but not outstanding. Tea was served with a teacup but no saucer. I'm not talking about a mug here, but a teacup that usually comes with a saucer as standard equipment. I pressed my (used) breadplate into service as a saucer. Note that this tea for one costs $4.50. For that one would expect a saucer. When the bill came I was overcharged $3.00 for my entree. Naturally the waiter had totally disappeared. Rather than track him down I deducted the $3.00 from his tip... not that he deserved one. Galveston has other 3-diamond restaurants. Bypass this one. Pros: Historic architecture Cons: Unprofessional service more

Beautiful Historic Hotel 3/22/2008

This is a beautiful upscale hotel with a fantastic view of the gulf. At the end of the day you can lounge in the lobby and get a soothing drink to help you relax. Our room was a little on the small side but this is no surprise since it was built back in 1911. The bed was very comfortable and the Concierge was extremely helpful in helping us figure out what to do while we were there. We had a small problem with our room service order but the manager on duty took care of us as soon as we brought it to his attention. I?d love to go back soon. more

A must stay! 3/21/2008

My boyfriend and I just got back from a weekend at Hotel Galvez, and it is truly the best place to stay in Galveston. It is directly on the beach with the best pool I've ever seen, including a swim up bar!. It is such a romantic & charming hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly, they seemed to really take pride in the hotel, which is hard to find these days. The grounds are beautiful, very tropical. All in all it was a great getaway. more

Loved this hotel! 2/15/2008

My stay at the Hotel Galvez was great! It?s charming and well kept with a beautiful view of the water from our room. The pool area is probably the best part of the hotel and had a great swim up style bar. I would definitely recommend eating at Bernardo?s while you?re there, the food was great. The staff was extremely accommodating and had that true Southern hospitality feel. I really loved this hotel, and would stay again. more

Disappointing 1/11/2008

Our party of 7 decided to try Bernardo's for dinner. We're sorry about that decision. more

Less than expected 6/12/2007

My first stay at The Galvez, expected a lot more. The room size was OK; furnishings were nice; TV not of current model, had limited channels; nice touch with the coffee maker and water; expected a mini-fridge in the room..not there; had only ONE bathrobe hanging in the closet; appreciated the safe in the room. Pros: Historical Hotel, Location, Dining Cons: Smokers all over Pool Area; Cleanliness; Parking more

A great place to eat and stay 8/18/2005

Although costly, the Hotel Galvez is one of the best hotels that I have stayed. It is directly across from the beach, and it has a mystique appearence even from the outside. The hotel room itself is beautifully funished, and the restaraunt, although somewhat costly, has great food. PROS: restaraunt and amenities CONS: cost more

A Step Back in Time in this hotel 7/28/2005

Hotel Galvez provides a historic backdrop with great views of the ocean. It's like stepping back in time with all the modern amenities. This is a great place for a wedding - they even have on-site coordinators! Food and staff are great. I just got one tiny complaint - the rooms run a bit small. It's a bit pricey, but going to one of the online places to book a room gets you great bargains! more

Not Worth The Extra $$$ 7/11/2005

Our room, with taxes, came to $200 per night. It had a great view, but was otherwise ordinary and small. Restaurant is overpriced and has no kids menu - or at least we weren't offered one. Great pool and friendly staff. Sign up for a free Wyndham By Request Membership before you go. One of the perks is free Internet access, otherwise it will cost you $9.95 per day. On the beach in front of the hotel we found chairs and umbrellas with the hotel's logo, which we assumed belonged to the Galvez (they did) and were available gratis to its guests (they weren't). The man who came by to collect the rent ($20 for the day or $10 for one hour) told us to move our things ""10 feet away"" if we weren't going to pay up. Pretty cheeky, considering that it's a public beach. Pros: Great Pool, Good Service, Wonderful Location Cons: Very Costly, Small Rooms, Flat Pillows more

Hotel Galvez 5/19/2005

This hotel opened in 1911,snce then it has been redone. The guestrooms have marble bathrooms and, hand decorated walls and a breathtaking view of the gulf. The rooms are very elegant. You can relax in their whirlpool or jacuzzi,or have a mixed drink at their swim up bar. PROS: They have high speed internet access to. CONS: Elegance is not cheap! more

Overrated, Go to NOLA instead 8/20/2003

I concur with some of the other reviews posted so far. Not the worst hotel, but definitely not worth the $150/night paid to stay there. Walls are indeed thin. Service disappointing - no bellhops to unload luggage or open front door, not enough valets. I've stayed in nicer, more elegant historic hotels in New Orleans for much less. Don't expect much - I did and was greatly disappointed. More $ needs to be spent to bring this hotel up to par with other fine hotels. THIS IS NOT A ROMANTIC HOTEL. Pros: Sunday Brunch, Proximity to Beach Cons: Service more

Way overrated 11/16/2002

I stay at the Hotel Galvez a while back, and I must admit. It was one of the worst hotels I've ever een in. The walls were so thin we could not sleep. We constantly can hear the elevator door bell and we can hear the conversations of people in the hall clearly. The room itself was adequate. The view was horrible (when facing the opposite side of the beach), not a pretty site to see the ghetto of Galveston. Overly priced I think I spent like $120 a one night stay. Pros: pool was nice, some elegant areas more

George Mitchell 8/13/2002

Mr. Mitchell has done a wonderful job renovating this historic hotel on Galveston Island. Mr. Mitchell has done so much for Galveston. The Sunday Brunch at the Galvez is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! Great cuisine and all the champaine you can drink. Made-to order omlets are out of this world. more

A Question of Value 8/12/2002

Our stay over the weekend was probably nearing the end of the school holiday season, and the reservation folks would not budge off the $199 fare for a standard king. When considering the New Orleans Ritz-Carlton's standard king rate was $135 for the same weekend, you have to raise the value question. I don't pinch pennies, and I realize hotels have to make hay when they can. The hotel service and food at Bernardo's were excellent, but the small rooms and flat pillows just wouldn't let me forget about the rate ! Maybe I'm getting old. Pros: Historic, Romantic, Great Service Cons: Small rooms, average furnishings more

Beautiful Historic Hotel 6/2/2002

We loved historic Hotel Galvez!! It was built in 1911! The rooms are a bit small but are lovely. The pool is one of the best I've ever seen-gorgeously landscaped, kid-friendly baby pool with mushroom fountain and kiddie pool furniture, and a swim-up Pool Bar for Mom & Dad! Bernardo's Restaurant was excellent! Try the fresh shrimp & spinach omelettes for brunch! Hotel Galvez is close to everything on the island and the service was outstanding! I was impressed with all of the history in the hotel and Galveston Island in general- much more than just a beach destination! Our family would highly recommend Hotel Galvez!!! Pros: Beauty, Restaurants, Location Cons: small rooms more

Stay along the Seawall 5/16/2002

One of the most spectacular structures on Galveston island since its makeover, the Galvez is the place to stay when you're visiting this Gulf Coast getaway. more
