Oh What a Night(mare) 11/24/2009

Went in for routine back surgery at 11 am. First, the doctor forgot to put in a catheter. Then, the morphine drip machine was broken, so when I pushed "the button" to get some pain relief, nothing happened. They gave me several quarts of saline solution intravenously to keep my fluids up, but with no catheter, by 2 am, my bladder was the size of a cantaloupe and growing, but because on the nerve damage I had suffered from my back injury, I was having trouble going to the bathroom. I kept trying to tell the nurses, but none of the nurses could understand me because they did not speak English well enough. The pain was growing more and more unbearable every hour, and I kept hitting the call button and asking the nurses to help, but they could not understand me, and instead of calling in someone who did understand and getting me some help, they finally just stopped coming. Around 5 am, I figured out (in desperation) that if I pushed on my abdomen as hard as I could, I could force myself to urinate, which I did about every 20-40 minutes to get some relief. But, since the nurses would no longer come to my calls, I had no place to put the urine, so I began filling drinking cups with my urine, and by the time a doctor finally came in the check on me in the morning after my excruciatingly painful and sleepless night, I had 5 full drinking cups totally full of urine lined up on my bed side table. I told the doctor about my pain, and she discovered that the morphine machine was not working. What a miserable experience. I couldn't wait to get out of there! Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Nurses did not speak english and stopped responding to calls more

Disappointed with the Mother and baby Unit 1/8/2008

1) My wife's water broke at 12AM, so we had to go inside via the Emergency room. They ushered us in, good so far, but instead of atleast giving her a wheel-chair, made us walk all the way to the Labor Unit. 2) Once inside the Labor unit, despite the fact that we had pre-registered with the Hospital with all of our personal and insurance information, we were asked for all that information all over again, in a rather rude manner. (Letting us know who the boss was, obviously!) 3) The overall Labor and Delivery Unit experience was normal and average. 4) Then came the moment to transfer us over to the Mother and Baby Unit at which place the real 'service' was shown by the nurses. Once admitted, the nurses were really rude, sometimes not even responding when asked for pain medications on the help line. The 'help-line' front-desk attendant was rude to the point of hanging up without any response, when requested to call the nurse. 5) The lab technician that drew from my baby doesnt even bother that the baby is in intense pain, doesnt even offer some soothing words. Hey, you are drawing out of a one day old baby, not some inanimate thing!! Soothe and pacify the baby or get out of the unit and try drawing from animals!! 6) The paediatrician that comes the second day looks at the Vitamin K shot that is given to the baby the moment he is born and thinks that is Hep B shot and records the same, doesnt even inform us. Imagine our astonishment, when after a week, our paediatrician informs us that the Hep B shot is only given in front of us and followed up with a yellow-card that has all the info. Who exactly would have been responsible if the baby got infected somehow? The only good things are the Nursery which is excellent, the average-to-above-average Labor and the Delivery Unit. Overall, i would not go to this Hospital for my second baby. I have expressed my pain to our doctors and i am trying to lodge an official complaint to the Hospital also. Pros: Nursery, Labor/Delivery Unit, Cafetaria Cons: Really bad Mother/Baby Unit Nurses, bad resident Paediatricians, bad techs more

Avoid the ER - they don't diagnose 7/15/2007

The Good Samaritan ER can treat symptoms so that you feel comfortable and go home, but they don't care to look into the underlying problem, they just want you to go see your doctor when his office is open. I went in with a very serious chronic medical condition, they did not take a good history, glossed over my condition, "made me comfortable", asked how I felt, and when I told them I was feeling better, they discharged me. When I tried to explain that my symptoms were not under control, the nurse yelled at me and humiliated me. Try Los Gatos Hospital ER. I went there the next day and they were very professional, understood my condition, and gave me appropriate and excellent care. Pros: they will make your acute symptoms go away Cons: treating symptoms before the diagnosis is not good medicine ~ they can "practice" on someone else! more
