Gomer's Midtown 6/26/2008

I echo everything said in the comments section. I am mostly a beer drinker. I like many, many different good beers. New Castle is one of my favorites, and Gomer's frequently has 12-pk bottles for $11.48 plus tax, which nigh unbeatable. While I like what I consider "good" beers such as Breckenridge, O'Dell's, New Belgium, Anchor, Blvd., I'm also a bargain shopper. That's what's great about Gomer's. You don't have to resort to buying 18-packs of Schwag from Milwaukee. I can always find a six pack I'll like on sale for $5.99 or $6.49 maximum. And Flying Monkey (Amber Ale is my personal favorite) right out of Olathe let's you keep it local for only $5.99 regular price. I'm picking up a 5.5 gallon (44 pints) torpedo a keg of the stuff tomorrow for $29.99 plus tax and tap (that's a special). Gomer's also has an cray to the Z wide and good wine selection, with a wine cellar in the basement for the rare and high $ stuff. A few weeks ago I was in there and Geddy Lee was was buying 8 bottles for around 8K + tax. Not being a high roller, I'm not interested in wines in that price range. But you can tell them, "I want a bottle of spanish tempranillo for under $21.50 including, just get me what you would get if that's all you could spend and you wanted the best you could get for that." And they will happily do it for you and not try to make you feel like a schmuck or even say, "well, if I HAD to do that, I guess I'd get this, but for only $28.79 + tax this one is SO much better." This place rocks. I started going in there when it was the closest lickey sto to my crib and I still go there even though I don't live quite as close by any more. War Gomers!!! more

Midtown's Best Liquor Store 5/3/2006

With a sound system that rivals most record stores, Gomer's is not your typical liquor store. Sitting at the bustling corner of 39th and Broadway, its ugly, ugly white building is as distinctive as its selection. When I walk in, I walk past all the wines, of which there seem to be many, and head straight for the refrigerated case filled with American craft brews. Gomer's is tiny, but it's a wonderful liquor store. Most of the staff are extremely knowledgeable, and are eager to help you find what you're looking for, or make recommendations. The beer selection here is just as good, or better than in the supermarket-sized liquor stores in the parking seas farther south, so I'm glad it saves me the drive. more

Gomer's Fine Wine and Spirits 2/28/2006

While Gomer's might not look all that impressive from the outside, it houses one of the best selections of beer and wine in the city. If you're looking for an upscale atmosphere in a swanky part of town, look elsewhere. However, if you're in search of a great beer selection and an impressive array of wine arranged by country, look no further. They could really use some work on the exterior of their store, but I guess it's the inside that matters most. more
