Geek Squad Alternative 8/5/2010

At one point or another we all need computer repair help and I am no different. I found myself in need at the worst possible moment. In the middle night, when everything is closed and the night before a report is due. I called Geek Squad online support for help and was charged for the $199 virus removal service. They connected to my pc and attempted to remove the problem. After a couple of hours and a whole lot of coffee and nail biting they call me back and say there is nothing they can do. This time, the guy I spoke to had a heavy accent and seemed to be calling from overseas. And long with this and the fact they said the virus is too embedded to be removed without causing further damage and system instability. I get off the disappointing phone call and am still sweating because this report is 35% of my overall grade in this course and I absolutely had to have this done in the morning. I run a quick Google search for a solution when I find SecureRemoteSupport[dot]com who provides online services and have a “No Fix No Pay” guarantee. Wow that would be nice if Geek Squad offered the same promise. Within an hour they had diagnosed the virus and had removed it completely for $105. And best of all, I didn’t lose any of my work and my operating system was completely repaired. Apparently the Geek Squad isn’t as good at their job as secureremotesupport[dot]com is. I really appreciate their diligence on fixing my issue and suggest others think twice before contacting Geek Squad to fix their computer. more

Expensive Geeks 3/29/2010

My cat Morris has long since loved to lay on top of my computer tower while I am online. It’s warm and cozy and probably has a great view of the room as far as a cats point of view goes. So it was no surprise when I started noticing a funny noise coming from the inside of my computer when I started it up. The noise finally got so bad that Morris refused to venture on top any longer. It was quite a frightening sound. And then out of the blue the computer would no longer load Windows. Sadly I took my injured computer into the Geek Squad ER and prayed that they could perform some life saving procedure that miraculously reunites us like in Soap Operas. They took the computer and within a few days my diagnosis was complete. Death by Hard Drive Failure.”O say it ain’t so!” “It was so young… etc.” Then the technician mentioned that they could install a new hard drive, do data recovery and reinstall the Windows operating system. He then quoted me a price that almost sent me to the REAL ER. It was almost $500! I could almost buy a whole new computer for that amount. Feeling like I should probably do some “shopping around” I took my computer home. At work the next day I looked up a few other businesses that could help me but would be me within my budget. I selected Secure Remote Support because they offered me the very best deal on parts and labor. I had my computer back up and running later that day and had all of my pictures, music and files back too. Geek Squad was going to take about 1 week to get it back and cost 5X the amount. I was afraid I might have lost some very important honeymoon photos. It was less than half of what Geek Squad was wanting and I felt like I was dealing with an experienced technician not a high school kid in his first job. more

geek squad altnerative 1/31/2010

Ive used two different geek squad locations in search of a decent group of guys that can repair my machine on time, punctually and decently. I dont think they exist. The 'geeks' at this location were a bit more knowledgable but they still managed to screw up my computer. I needed them to install an anti virus program and remove the crap that came on the machine. They didnt properly do this and I ended up consulting an outside company that I found on the internet. \r \r Secure Remote Support was the company I found on google that was able to properly diagnose the issue with the anti virus stuff. Apparently the geek squad guys werent disabling my current antivirus and removing it first before installing the new software. \r \r The tech at secureremotesupport (dot) com got this on the first try and had the machine up and running within an hour. They were affordable, reasonable, and very friendly. \r \r Couldnt have asked for a better experience from these guys. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more
