Best

I visited the Freight House in Stillwater, MN over the weekend. This restaurant/bar is located right on the St. Croix River. It hosts one of the largest decks around; it's huge!...

Worst

Friends and family have been visiting the Freight House for years. The setting is really quite charming: a converted riverside brick industrial building with rough-cut hardwood ...

What a shame! 9/25/2006

Stillwater is such a beautiful place and then this restaurant had to ruin it with terrible service. How can you enjoy a meal when you are served by people who need to undergo a basic course in customer service and just plain nice? Whoever screened and hired them should be fired!\r \r Our waitress spilled water all over me and my husband. we thought that would be the worst thing that could happen. No -- We moved to another table and had to wait a long time before we got served. Our waitress kept walking around and pretending not to notice her customers looking at her to get her attention. Worse, her colleagues were also walking around and not bothering to check anyone. Dad had to finally ask someone, ""Are you in charge of this table?""\r \r My mom ordered a large bowl of wild rice soup and asked her if it was possible to half it. Without even thinking, she said flat out (very rude), ""No,"" to which my mom frowned. I clarified and said if she can supply an extra bowl and then she agreed. Then My dad initially wanted the pork chop but she said that it would take 20 minutes, prompting my dad to order something else, thinking that the preparation would be faster.\r \r Alas, we waited for like half an hour. When the meals arrived, the waitress then asked, ""Is everything alright?"" She was pertaining to the food, TO WHICH WE HAVE YET TO EAT!!! Hello! \r \r Anyway, she was rude, slow and inefficient. You would think that she would at least be accommodating given that she inconvenienced us with her clumsiness. It's okay if she were clumsy but nice. She was neither. And it seems the rest of the of crew act that way. \r \r The food wasn't all that great either! \r Pros: Nice view of St. Croix, old-style dining Cons: bad service, had to wait long to be served, rude waitress more

A Dramatic Fall From Grace 8/10/2006

Friends and family have been visiting the Freight House for years. The setting is really quite charming: a converted riverside brick industrial building with rough-cut hardwood floors and high ceilings. They have a great outdoor patio that has an enjoyable St. Croix view. The service has historically been slow (and of varying quality) especially on the patio, but the food usually passable. Our most recent visit will probably be our last. \r \r Our server was pleasant but, again, slower than molasses in January. Took over 10 minutes to get our party of four WATER. The menu seems to have been ""streamlined"", leaving us with a few appetizers, burgers, salads, sandwiches, and about 8 entrees. We ordered 2 burgers and 2 salads. The food arrived 30+ minutes later. My burger was burned and my fries (which I paid extra for) were soggy. A major disappointment, especially for the price. I noticed that none of my companions finished their meals, and believe me, we're all members of the ""Clean Plate Club"". My wife said the next day her salad was dreadful, but we were both too embarrassed to ask our friends how their meals were. \r \r Total bill for 4 bad meals & non-alcoholic beverages = $70. Not a good equation. I'm not sure why this formerly enjoyable restaurant has allowed the kitchen to fall into such disrepair. All I know is I'm truly disappointed and won't return until they're under new management/ownership. Pros: Ambiance, Waterfront views Cons: Dreadful food (what more needs to be said?), SLOW service more

User review by krish 10/2/2005

It's hard to review considering we had the worst server ever here. She was obviously not happy to be there, or to be serving us. which meant no drink refills for us. The patio makes this place. The food is fine, nothing to set it apart from a million other restaurants. Still, it was fun to be out on the patio on a nice Saturday afternoon. Pros: patio Cons: everything else more

Do not eat here! 9/13/2004

The food is horrendous and the service worse. Most nights they run out of half of the menu which is already limited. I would absolutely recommend heading somewhere else at one of the many great restaurants Stillwater has to offer. If you like the club, party, single scene this place is good after the restaurant has closed. Pros: Atmosphere, Party scene afterhour Cons: , Service, Menu more

Stunning Disappointment 7/23/2004

It is extremely disappointing that it is so hard to find a good restaurant along the St. Croix, and this restaurant serves up disappointment in heaping portions. The Cajun Ribeye steak $20, was the most flat tired piece of meat I've ever tasted, with no trace of Cajun seasoning. Save your money for Ruth's Chris if you're going to pay these kinds of prices. The Chipotle Shrimp Salad arrived with only four shrimp that were clearly fresh from the freezer and had never been touched with a chipotle sauce as the title suggests. The Mushroom Swiss Burger had been cooked into submission, without any trace of beef flavor left. Clearly the management feels carte blanche to rip off patrons who are suckered into the restaurant by a nice patio and river view. With these prices and in this area they have an obligation to provide a higher quality product. Cons: , Quality, Unprofessional more

Never Coming Back 6/27/2004

So sad that such a unique and historical place is absolutely ruined by about the worst menu and service we've experienced in a while. Not a healthy thing to be found on the menu. However, if I'm going to eat junk food, I'd at least like it to taste good. C'mon, a burger with nothing but a lousy bun and a wilted piece of lettuce? I had to go ask our waitress for some tomatoes and onions because she was too busy chatting. I'm positive the rest of the food came right off the grocery store shelf. Stale chips, lousy cole slaw, etc. The kids menu is horrible too. My son ordered the kids pizza which I know for a fact was a frozen Totino's pizza. I would have rather gone to McDonald's for some decent tasting junk food and paid a fraction of the price. more
