Food decent, snobby server and hostess, exceptional food run 1/8/2010

On Jan 8th, 2010 my wife and I finally had time to take a night out alone. We both work opposite hours and when we do go out it is a special occasion. When we went in to Fred and Steve's we were properly greeted by a gentleman at the host stand. He politly asked if we had reservations, we told him no, he replied about 10-15 minutes for a wait. Not a problem. We were looking at the menu outside of the retaurant for a few and decided to go in and sit in the lounge. When we did so a woman was now at the hostess stand and approached us with the following phrase,""Can I help you?"", what I thought should have happened is,"" Hi, welcome to Fred and Steves, your table will be ready shortly."" We waited a little longer than stated, no biggie. However the bus boy was the o ne to tell us out table was ready, and when we walked over to our table, the hostess stopped us again and told us to wait. She seemed very unpleasant to my wife and I. After sitting, the food runner did everything perfect, from watering the table and bringing us some bread with a very nice trio of dips. After 10 or 15 minutes, the waitress finally appeared, took our drink and app order and was off. Now call me crazy but we were seated in the lounge next to the bar, yet our apps were at our table before our drinks. David, the food runner came over and apologized for this, not his responsability. Our drinks came a few minutes later. We finished our apps well before our server came back over to the table to ask how they were or if we were ready to order. She eventually did come over, we ordered and yet again David had everything under controll. My steak was well overcooked, but I dare not send it back for fear that it would take 30 more minutes to get a new one. Now I was a Sous Chef for many years and I know how to please the customers from the food aspect, my wife is a restaurant manager for Darden Enterprise. Anyway, no table visit from our server while eating, only the food runner, David. After dinner, he then sold me on a wonderful white chocolate dessert with fresh berries. When that arrived at the table is when our server decided to stop to see if we needed anything else. We told her no, and that is because David had already taken care of us. Now in my opinion and I said this to my wife, I have no problem paying the prices in which are on the menu, but for the price you pay, trust me it doesn't reflect the lack of service or attention you get as a paying patron. I would highly recomend David for a promotion, however I would not recomend this establishment if you are looking for a well deserved pampered experience. Pros: Exceptional food runner/table assistant Cons: snobish waitstaff more

Best Steak in RI 1/14/2009

I had the stuffed lobster and I have to say it was the best I have ever had, my wife had the cowboy and she loved it. Sides are not included with your entree but well worth the price! Pros: Free valet parking Cons: smoking more

Great Customer Service and Atmosphere 4/26/2008

We received immediate service, were seated promptly. The waiter took our order promptly as well. I had plenty of refills as the waiter was very conscientious. The seating was very comfortable and sat by window. While waiting for food we watched people dance in the casino and could slightly hear the band from outside the restaurant. The food was good and the portions of steak were great. I have had better food at another upscale steakhouse however I felt much more comfortable at this steakhouse. Dress is casual which is a plus for me. Pros: Service, Booth seats, Window view, and Casual dress allowed Cons: Could add a little more flavor to the food more

TERRIBLE!! 2/23/2008

Between the directions online being inaccurate, to waiting a half hour to be seated even with a reservation, to waiting at least 15 minutes just for someone to take our order, to getting our food over an HOUR later,(who wants dinner at 10:40pm?? We almost walked out before then) to the food being HORRIBLE (all overcooked, one steak was so salty it was almost inedible, the other 3 had no flavor at all.. the barrel cut filet was the same size as the petite which were burned, the lobster bisque tasted like straight up butter with TWO pieces of lobster in it).. the table next to us were complaining about the same things! I cant believe they have the nerve to overcharge for this garbage food and horrible service. We expressed our concerns to the waitress and she sent the manager over. He said he would send us desserts and never did, we never even recieved the birthday attention we requested at reservation time! Horrible, dont even bother trying it. Pros: It was pretty Cons: Food, service, etc. more

FIRST TIME GREAT!, SECOND TIME HORRIBLE 1/6/2008

WE VISITED THE STEAKHOUSE ON DECEMBER 21ST AND IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING EXPERIENCE, THE FOOD, THE ATMOSPHERE, THE SERVICE. WE COULDN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. WHEN WE WENT BACK TWO WEEKS LATER IT WAS THE WORSE SERVICE, TERRIBLE FOOD AND HORRIBLE ATMOSPHERE. THE EMPLOYEES WERE ARGUING WITH EACH OTHER, THE WAITRESS NEVER RETURNED TO THE TABLE, THE FOOD WASN'T COOKED PROPERLY AND IT WAS SERVED ON PLATES THAT WAY TOO HOT TO EVEN TOUCH!! WE WERE WARNED NOT TO TOUCH THEM, BECAUSE THEY WERE 350 DEGREE PLATES!! WHAT?? I SET UP RESERVATIONS THROUGH THE WEBSITE AND IT ASKED FOR ANYTHING SPECIAL, IT WAS MY HUSBANDS BIRTHDAY AND I WANTED A CAKE WITH A CANDLE, NO SINGING, NOTHING SPECIAL...IT WAS NEVER DONE, THEY DIDN'T EVEN ASK! IT COSTS US A $228.00 FOR A MEAL THAT TOOK OVER AN HOUR TO GET!! IT WASN'T COOKED RIGHT AND THE SERVICE WASN'T ANYTHING BETTER THAN YOU WOULD GET AT BURGER KING!\r DEFINATELY A DISAPPOINTMENT FROM OUR FIRST EXPERIENCE!!! more

Great place for.....a salad! 12/9/2007

I've worked in restaurants my whole young adult life....and I have never felt the need to warn people about a dining experience before (and I have dined out at a lot of places) but a dinner at Fred and Steve's changed everything. If you like a tasty Ceasar salad, or house.....this is the place......but that's about as far as the compliments go. The prices are comparable to an upscale steakhouse, but the quality is no where near comparable...there is no difference between what Fred and Steve serves and a $9.00 Porterhouse from Stop n' Shop. No Joking! It pained me to pay $40 for it. The place is a rip off, they add insult to injury by charging $6 to $9 for mediocre sides (a la carte menu). The salads are huge, I guess they are hoping you fill up on those and don't notice that the rest of your dinner stinks. The wine and drinks are very expensive and the service is slower than the speed of smell. My husband's steak was served to us ice cold, and everyone's side sauce was sitting for so long, a skin had developed over them. We all asked for new sides and sent my husband's steak back, only to be served the same steak again, this time it was not medium/rare as requested, it was well done. We had no appietizers and an average of 1 drink per person and it ended up being $65 per person. Normally, I wouldn't blink at spending $65 per person at a steak house, but Fred and Steve aren't even close trying to pass this one off as a steakhouse. Fred and Steve, don't quit your day jobs. more

Best Steaks in New England 9/22/2007

Went to Fred & Steve's with a party of 6 celebrating our anniversarys on Sept 16th 2007. The steaks were the best I've had in New England. The Kansas City Dry Aged Prime Steak was fantastic and was the size of something Fred Flinstone would be served. Steve De Ossie was on site and was as gracious as a host could be. We had some in depth football discussions, photos with him and loved hearing some of his Belichek stories. Though the price was high the steaks were worth every penny. I highly recommend Fred & Steve's.\r \r No sign of Fred though.\r Pros: Food, Host Cons: Parking more

Service was terrible, Food was good, watch your bill closely 9/16/2007

What a dissappointment. I rated 1-star because it wouldn't let me rate 0-stars. I had much higher expectations for Fred and Steves. The service was atrocious. We arrived 15-mins before our reservation - checked in with the Maitre de and decided to have some drinks. We eventually had to remind them that we were there. We finally got seated in the back most room. The room had 5 waitresses buzzing around the tables. You'd think one would come over and greet us - after like 15mins of just sitting there I had to ask for a waitress as one cruised by. She apologized and offered to take our order - we had to ask for the specials. I ordered the 14oz filet, cooked medium, butterflied with au poive sauce, my wife got the filet special, medium well. It took another 20-mins before we saw our server again. She apologized again and said its coming. Food arrives - wifes dish is great, my dish is undercooked (nearly raw), not butterflied and no au poive. The waitress apologizes and takes it back. 5-mins later it re-arrives - cooked as I like, but still no butterfly and no au poive sauce. I get the au poive sauce on the side but elect not to ask for a cut worried it'll take forever. The food was excellent. Nice tender steak. When we finish, too full to get dessert, so we ask for the bill. It comes with an $8.00 chocolate cake on the charge. The waitress removes it. Bill was $130. I leave what I believe is a $15 tip and a note explaining Service Needs Improvement. The next day I look at my receipt and notice another $22.00 service / tip that had been included in the price before my tip. I think she mixed up the bills from another table.\r \r As I said, food was really good once we got it, but service was terrible.\r I will never go back. Too bad - it had so much potential.\r \r Pros: Good food Cons: Absolutely terrible service more

The King of Steak 7/2/2007

Greater Providence has gone from a one steak town to a burgeoning beef capital. The best of the lot isn't the big name chains. Move over Capital Grille, Ruth's Chris and Shula's. Make room for Fred & Steve's Steakhouse. This new restaurant opened in the spring at the recently renovated Twin Rivers casino in Lincoln. We joined a diverse group for Father's Day (actually the night before). Bottom line: this was the best steak we've had in years, if not ever. Everything was cooked to perfection; personal favorites include the Kansas City and Cowboy steaks, the lobster bisque (in a delightful presentation), the shaved corn, creamed spinach, potato wedges and shrimp scampi. Over the years, our group has gathered at some of the best restaurants in Providence and Boston. None was better than Fred & Steve's. In fact, we're already planning to meet again later this month. Also worth mentioning is the staff, very attentative and well prepared. Finally a steakhouse worthy of five stars. Better service than the pretenious Capital Grill, better steaks than the ridiculously over prices, over-hyped Ruth's Chris and better surroundings than the sports bar Shula's. The owners, former football stars Fred Smerlas and Steve Deossie, were also at the restaurant and smozed with the customers. We've been to Michael Jordan's in Connecticut a couple of dozen times and have never once seen the namesake. Pros: Excellent steaks, great service, inviting atmosphere Cons: Couldn't get reservations until after 9p despite calling two weeks in advance more

Good steak, decent prices, great servings. 6/30/2007

The old Lincoln Park is certainly making a go at being a true destination. Still, knowing the previous clientele for which what is now Twin River was known, namely those who are 9.5 million years old and those to whom dental hygiene means little, I did not enter with high hopes. Aside from the same old clientele, Twin River and its selection of restaurants impresses.\r \r As was the case with Fred & Steve's. A very good restaurant that offers decent prices ($20-$35 for a steak) on excellent meat in e-freakin'-normous portions. I had what I do not consider the best filet I've ever had, but it was far and away the largest. It was larger than my fist. It was perfectly cooked and was a very good cut. Certainly worth the money.\r \r Passed around my party were a number of a appetizers and meats. The asparagus was well-cooked but a bit too peppery. I like it when they let me season my own veggies. The oysters were very tasty but were nothing special. The corn was good, as was the broccoli and the cheese souffle. Still, none of it was amazing. It's obvious the stars of the meal were the meats. Filets, rib-eyes, they were all perfectly cooked examples of good cuts. Very good all around. And, again, the servings are bleedin' enormous.\r \r The ambiance is very good. Well decorated and lit. The sits are so cushy I was afraid I was going to sink into them and drown. Plenty of room at our booth and the service was VERY friendly and attentive. And on a lighter note, my girlfriend thought they had the best Midori Sour she's ever had. So if you wanted a drink recommendation, there it is. The wine list is adequate, but it's obvious that wine snobs.are not being catered to. This is a place for meat lovers.\r \r I recommend Fred & Steve's if it's somewhat nearby. For me, it's about 40 minutes away and I don't really feel motivated to seek it out. If I was in the neighborhood, though, I would never hesitate to go and get what is, even at these prices, a good value for good steak. Pros: Excellent steak and cuts, ambiance, and service. Good variety. Enormous servings. Cons: A bit pricey, and some things are merely ""good."" more

Best Steak I have ever had!! 6/28/2007

Being a very picky eater and not a big steak eater, I was very skeptical about this restaurant. However, after I tried the fabulous sides and then bit into the juicy steak, I was a true believer. Fred & Steve's Steakhouse has ultra modern style decor which makes the restaurant perfect for a date as well as hanging out with friends. It is one of the top dining destinations in RI! Pros: Ambience, service, menu choices, food quality more
