Best Central Austin Sandwiches 2/22/2012

Love everything I've tried: chicken and eggplant sandwich is delicious with the side of homemade pickles. Get there early to beat the crowd. more

I love, Love, LOVE this place 8/2/2009

I first discovered this little house while working off a shop on 35th street several years ago. Year after year i just keep coming back for more, Their slaw and potato salad are amazing and just wait until you sink your teeth into the gypsy grove. However, the best thing on the menu is by far the tortilla soup. I am a huge soup connoisseur and experiment with everything from coconut curry and menudo to pho and down home baked potato soup. Needless to say, growing up in south Texas, i've had some good tortilla soup but this is by far the best. It has a clear broth base like in traditional mexican caldo (I hate those thick tomato bases other places like Chilies and Trudys serve)and the spices are just right. They only draw back is that they close mid afternoon so lunch is the only option here. \r Pros: Food quality, service, delivery Cons: small location so it can get crowded during lunch rush more

Definitely go here!!! 2/14/2009

Wow. I ordered the half Chicken and Eggplant sandwich with half Greek salad. And wow. Firstly, the greek salad was the best I've ever had. Greens, cucumber, olives, croutons, feta cheese, tomatoes, red onion, delicious dressing, not too tangy, not too much -- just perfect. It was incredible. The sandwich though was the best part. Grilled chicken, eggplant, basil pesto, blackberry balsamic vinaigrette and goat cheese (enough to put me into goat cheese heaven!) all on multigrain bread. It was absolutely incredible. Not only was the food amazing but the place is SO adorable. They brew Republic of Tea, they have fresh flowers all over the place, it's so homey and cosy and adorable. I also shared an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (my favorite kind!), the flavor was delicious but it was crunchy instead of chewy, I prefer them chewy. They're baked fresh from scratch with all real ingredients - butter, sugar, eggs - yum! All their other ingredients are fresh also. No frozen meat, no frozen egg patties. Real eggs used all around. Their bread is delivered fresh daily from Mandolo's (at the Triangle on 45th and Guadalupe). In sum, go here, try it, it's delicious! Adorable and all real, natural food. Ditch the food chains and go to Food Heads! Pros: Food, service, location, ambience Cons: Parking more

Awesome sandwiches! 1/26/2009

I've heard of this place and luckily stumbled across it for lunch. I had the Leg of Lamb sandwich and my friend had the Chicken and Eggplant sandwich. We split each other's selections. All I can say is Awesome!!! Fantastic sandwich and a lot of sandwich too for an incredible price. I would have given it 5 stars but the counter help wasn't very helpful. The hipster girl with the nose piercing was downright rude. Nonetheless, definately worth the visit. Just tip according to the service and all is good. Pros: Awesome sandwiches, great price, high value Cons: lacking on service more

great lunch menu and local biz 11/16/2008

fresh, well-prepared lunch offering that beats any corp joint hands down. If you are in a lunch funk, this is your place. \r \r Spicy Apple Pork Tenderloin Sandwich - is my favorite. Pros: Great, diverse lunch menu Cons: It's a busy place more

Don't Expect Good Service or Courtesy from the Staff 8/24/2008

I didn't have an opportunity actually eat food at Food Heads although I have heard good things about the menu. I showed up at 7 minutes till closing and they told me that they were closed. I looked at my watch and said ""You guys closing early today""? The young lady behind the counter rudely stated ""we're not closing that early, its 6 minutes till 4:00 and we close at 4:00"". \r \r Again, I've heard great things about the food but I've also heard that the service is pretty bad. The latter was confirmed upon my first and last visit to Food Heads. \r \r Pros: Great Location Cons: Incredibly Rude Staff more

Not worth it 6/10/2008

I have given FoodHeads several tries & always end up with the same result: HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! I also just waited 45 minutes for a simple sandwich which they screwed up- as usual. I have called & complained in the past but now I simply refuse to go there. Although the menu sounds enticing the cons just make it a sucky place. more

horrible customer service 2/18/2008

I ate lunch here the other day and ordered a sandwich with pickles. The cashier said we are out of the pickles how about the potato salad. I said sure but i got cole slaw instead ( which was disgusting). I went and told them i ordered potato salad and they said they ran out. Instead of telling me that they just assumed i would have cole slaw instead. I asked them if i could have a bag of chips b/c they didn't have anything else i order and the said no ( they were only .75). So instead of giving me a side i liked or chips they lost a customer and i will definetily spread the word. What a waste of $20. A $9 sandwich that wasn't even good wasn't worth it. Pros: cute house Cons: everything else. Food, price and service all sucked more

always a delight! 8/30/2007

foodheads has been pleasing me for years. hidden for a long time, they recently received much press and were having to adjust to more business. it's silly to think that places don't have off days. but overall, i feel the same great vibe, same huge portions, and constantly innovative tastes. also, the catering is competitively priced and delicious. love it and recommend it all the time. Pros: huge portions, friendly people, casual environment Cons: inside seating limited more

Used to be good - But now bad food and bad service 4/27/2007

Foodheads used to be a great sandwich shop. My husband and I would go once a week at least. On our last two visits the food has been noticeably bad and the service not nearly as friendly. The Chicken Special sandwich was my favorite, with the Lami a close second. Today, both of these sandwiches came out of the kitchen cold (they used to be warm and fresh), the bread tasted stale, and the sandwich seemed like it had been thrown together with no care or skill. I am really disappointed as this used to be a great shop. I think Foodheads has gotten popular and in trying to produce more quantity the quality has drastically declined. I wont be going back to Foodheads anymore - I am sad to lose a good sandwich shop, but for $7 for a sandwich I rather go elsewhere. more

Best Sandwhich in Town 7/13/2006

Very unique, great atmosphere, and terrific food. Wish it was open later and more often but well worth it. Pros: Great Sandwhiches, cool atmosphere Cons: Not open long enough and only for lunch. more

great catering ! 5/24/2006

Foodheads catered my wedding reception and the food and service were fabulous. Guests raved about the food and everyone--including vegetarians, and even two vegans--had plenty to eat. They went above and beyond. Great experience. would happily hire them again. Pros: Great Value, Awesome Food, Superb Service more

AMAZING. 4/18/2006

The decor is funky, laidback and fun, but without a complete lack of sophistication. The food is scrumptious... They do things seasonally and change there menu accordingly. The chicken tortilla soup is spectacular, as is just about everything else there. The Pork loin sandwich with bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, and their own chipotle mayo is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time (although the meat can be a bit over cooked at times). The staff is friendly and the food is great... what's not to love? Pros: Low prices, Comfortable setting, friendly staff more

Best Kept Secret in Central Austin!! 5/14/2005

This amazing little restaurant packs a powerful punch the first time you bite into one of their succulent sandwiches or sip one of their amazing soups!! Nothing else like it in Austin. You can pick up a sample of what they offer in the sandwiches section of Whole Foods, but only let that tide you over until you experience the real thing - hot, fresh, awesome combinations you'd never think of that literally melt in your mouth. Try every sandwich on the board and especially don't miss the daily specials - this place is the BEST!! Pros: Best Sandwiches, Gourmet Soups, Comfortable&Friendly more

Best sandwiches in town! 5/10/2005

Tasy & unique sandwiches 8/2/2003

I'd driven by this place for a year but when I read that it got the Austin Chronicle's Critics Choice for sandwiches, I gave it a try and understood their praise. Food Heads does have the best sandwiches I've in Austin. The funky, casual house is the perfect atmosphere for the food. I got one of their specials: grilled pork tenderloin with avocado, chiptole ""slaw,"" and a fried egg. Weird and declious (they also have more standard sandwiches, too). Pros: interesting sandwiche, tasty Cons: odd hours more
