This place has really gone DOWN over the years. I had bad shrimp served to me at Five Happiness and the manager didn't even offer an apology...she just asked me to replace the dish with something else. I was not impressed. Years ago this place was good...not anymore. more

Good Chinese food 8/12/2009

Five Happiness has great Chinese food! The servers are helpful and nice. They food is always fresh. They have a great minced shrimp dish that is served in lettuce leaves. more

Best Chinese in New Orleans 9/22/2008

I am surprised at negative reviews of this place. I've never had a bad meal there. The service has always been fine. The food has always been high quality and fresh. Unlike some places, the chicken is all white meat without paying extra and having to ask for it. The wonton soup is not just some bland broth with a couple of noodles - it is flavorful, full of pork wontons and even has chinese BBQ pork in it. The lunch specials are a good value - a wonton, soup of your choice, fried rice and an entree - plenty of food for the price. I cannot speak the other reviewer's problem with the delivery since I always pick up my orders but I've never gotten a wrong order or even had to wait. And the food was hot and fresh. I've not found any other Chinese (well, the American version of it anyway) place that was as good in the New Orleans area. Pros: Good food, good service Cons: Area not so great at night more

Not what it used to be 2/12/2008

Five Happiness is not what it used to be. I'm not sure what has gone wrong, but the service is worse than ever as well as the food tasting average. I used to enjoy going to this restaurant for the experience, excellent service, and fantastic food... now it's not worth the price. If you haven't gone here, try it once. I much prefer China Orchid further down Carrollton, almost to St. Charles. Pros: Wide variety of food, can seat large groups Cons: Service has gone done, food is certainly not above average more

Horrible Restaurant and Customer Service 11/12/2007

I used to love Five Happiness, I thought that it was the best and most authentic chinese food in the city. Of late, their service has completely gone down the tubes. Not only do they not get my phone number right (and insist that I have given them an incorrect phone number), they claim that they gone out to deliver my food two or three times. Also, they claim that the address I gave them was incorrect, and that there was no such address. This has happened twice now, the first time, I had to wait nearly two hours for my order. When the delivery boy finally arrived, I watched as he ran to deliver someone else's food first, and then came back to deliver mine, which they gave me the food that they had sent out the first time, which at that point was not fresh and tasted horrible. That they did not offer any discount or some sort of compensation for the terrible quality of their food is inexcusable. The second time, I never even received my food. I will not ever order from them again, and I recommend the same from all persons who ask me. more

Alright if you really need Chinese food 10/19/2007

For the area and a quick bite, this place is okay. I've definitely had better, but with New Orleans not having a large Chinese population, you can't really expect much from this place. Service is barely with a smile and prices are overpriced for what you get. But it's close to where we live and feeds the craving when you want Chinese food. I will say that the new renovations since the hurricane makes the new ambiance of the restaurant appealing, but the waitstaff makes you feel like they're doing you a favor for waiting on your table. Pros: Nice interior Cons: Unfriendly waitstaff, food isn't the greatest more

Terrible service and Food 5/2/2005

I have only been there once, but i have to admit that the food is terrible and the service was bad as well. They managed to mess up my order and bring me something completely different and then when i actually got what i ordered it tasted terrible. This was one of the rare times that I actually didnt touch my meal even though I was hungry. more

Best Chinese in N.O. 7/25/2004

I'd rate this as the best Chinese food in the N.O. area (a step above Trey Yuen), but you have to know what to order. Order a specialty, not the cheap stuff (which is only mediocre). The shrimp with pecans and sesame seeds is out of this world. Hot and sour / wonton soups are great. Crab rangoons are some of the best you'll find. General's Chicken is excellent. Service is usally very good also. more

American style Chinese food 1/6/2003

If you are into American Style Chinese Food, this is the place to go. No where near Chinese Food you get in Southern Cal. more

If this is the best, eat thai or creole 10/26/2002

Everyone I've met recommended 5 Happiness as the best Chinese in town. If that is true, I will wait until I take a trip elsewhere to eat Chinese food again. New Orleans has so many great places to eat but this is not one of them. The chicken was dry, the hot and sour soup was bland, and the vegetarian egg rolls contained unidentifiable (meat?) items. If you are craving asian food, go for Thai. There are plenty of better (and cheaper) places for Thai. more

Happiness indeed 5/20/2002

Don't even bother with other Chinese restaurants in town -- Five Happiness IS the best, whether you eat there or order take-out. The service is always congenial and accommodating, from hostess (who doubles, with equal grace, as the order-taker for phone-ins) to servers, and you never feel rushed, even when all the dining rooms are packed. The food is unmatched in the area, as far as traditional Chinese food goes. I dream about Five Happiness' pot stickers, crab ragoons and kung pao chicken. more

Food fit for an emperor 5/16/2002

Pish-tosh to the naysayers who disparage Five Happiness in comparison to some Asian food Shangri-Las up north. This is one of the very best restaurants in town, and hands-down the very best place for Chinese food within your average nuclear blast radius. I especially recommend the General's chicken, spicy and sweet-sour, as well as the chicken-fried rice, the best you can get in New Orleans. The atmosphere is just short of fancy, which is perfect for the hordes of Birkenstock-clad professionals with no sense of style who crowd the place most nights and weekends. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Pricey more
