My family was in from Texas and wanted to walk across the bridge. We were going for lunch someplace else but it was closing so they recommended Five Front. What a great surprise...

Unless you sit in the backyard the views are horrible (you can see the on ramp to the brooklyn queens expressway all night). The food is small in portions, and the servers were ho...

What a nice surprise! 7/4/2009

My family was in from Texas and wanted to walk across the bridge. We were going for lunch someplace else but it was closing so they recommended Five Front. What a great surprise!! We sat in the garden and could not have had a nicer lunch. My nieces both had the kids burgers and they loved them. We also had the salmon sandwich and it was delicious too. I would love to try dinner at night, in fact, I may walk across the bridge again this week just to come back. The service was great, very friendly atmosphere, and very cute inside too. \r Pros: Garden, Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Have to walk across the bridge to get there! more

Every neighborhood needs a bistro this great! 6/28/2009

Food is delicious and fresh. The chef is in touch with the seasons of the year and what food his diners will crave during those seasons, as each seasonal menu fills you with the ""tastes"" of that season. Savory lamb stew; light, flaky fish; and beautifully roasted chicken breast are a few highlights of the frequently changing menu. The menu-staple burger and fries are incredible. I've been hesitant to publicize this fact (b/c I don't want to give up my coveted seat at the bar), but dining at the bar at 5 Front is phenomenal. Comfy seats, loads of attention from the bartender and an impressive wine list make this bar tough to beat. Bartenders will either engage you in conversation or let you eat in peace, depending on your mood. Either way, you are always made to feel like an appreciated local. Plus, the big, spacious garden with lots of trees and landscaping is spectacular. It is a relaxing place to unwind after a long, stressful day. Pros: Fantastic food, great vibe/atmosphere, terrific bar &garden. more

Great DUMBO Dining 7/16/2008

Went with a party of six out to an early Saturday evening dinner. We were seated immediately outside in their really nice and open outdoor garden. Entrees ordered included the Duck, Steak, Salmon, Muscles, and a few others...but basically everybody seemed very pleased with what they chose for appetizers, main course, and desserts. On a perfect summer evening you couldn't ask for a better place to hang out for a few hours with friends. Pros: Outdoor Garden, Overall quality of perpared menu items. Cons: Not cheap...but what is these days? more

A Keeper for Sure! 9/28/2007

Went to 5 Front last night for the first time and dined in the park-like setting outside. Had fine food - calamari salad and a scallop entree all cooked perfectly , endive salad with pecans and grapes, all super fresh and lightly dressed so it remained crispy, and a hearty crab cake that was ALL crab, with just enough ""stuff"" to keep it together. The chef has a light and deft hand--nothing oversauced or underseasoned . We will go back for sure, and look forward to dining indoors during colder weather, as the space was appealing--very low key and intimate. Wish the outdoor chairs were higher and more comfortable, but that is easy to fix. Hope they share their crab cake recipe! Pros: wonderful food, service on the mark Cons: outdoor chairs too low for table height more

great food and ambiance. Outstanding service 7/23/2007

Met a friend for dinner after a long day- was seated immediately at a table outside which was beautiful, and quite a pleasant surprise for Brooklyn. There was live music which was good and not too loud- the area is cozy and lush with foliage. Service was outstanding and staff very knowledgable. I ordered a burger which I rarely do and was not disappointed. Great flavor and accompanied by outstanding shoestring fries. \r Early dinner on Friday night does not disappoint. It is a quick walk to the river after dinner with spectacular view of Manhattan. Pros: Food, Spirits, Ambience more

Fabulous Food in a Twinkling Garden.... 7/16/2007

I live in South Florida, where garden and outdoor dining is in abundance, so I was beyond impressed to find this lovely little urban oasis in Brooklyn. . The menu is impressive, from delectable salads all the way to the mind-blowing desserts and extensive wine menu. I've had lunch and dinner at Five Front on two separate trips and they are consistent. The specials are phenomenal, the staples equally delectable and the service is impeccable. No matter what your food preferances, there are more than ample choices on their menu to please to please every palate. The last time my friends and I were there, we went crazy trying numerous appetizers, our main course, several different desserts and I don't know how much wine. We ate like we were going to the chair. This is a lovely garden dining experience I highly recommend. more

Great food, Great atmosphere, Awsome garden 7/16/2007

Dont miss out, this place is great. If you are going out and are looking for the right place to go and have a nice evening under the stars, this is it. The service is impecable, the chef's menu is always fantastic, and the owner's are really special and down to earth. Here, anything is possible. Keep up the good work. Pros: Food, service, atmosphere more

great outdoor area; delicious menu 5/18/2007

i've tried almost everthing here, their crab cakes and their burgers are my comfort food ; nice atmosphere (the outdoor space is wonderful at night) & attentive waitstaff. love the location- looks great for parties, too Pros: table outside was great, family friendly more

Great Saturday Night Dinner 5/6/2007

I just tried this place for the first time last time night and I really loved it. I ate outside in the garden, which was both a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. I ordered the zuchinni flowers and the pei mussels in a curry sauce. The curry sauce was recommended by my waitress and I don't usually like curry but I could not get enough of it. I would definately order it again and recommend it to anyone . For my entree I had short ribs with cous cous, which was very tender and a nice large serving. My friend had the oven- roasted Lake Victorian perch, which was refreshing and light. We also had the drink special, pomegranate martini, which was a great summer drink to enjoy outside. In addition, the service was great. I would highly recommend it to anyone and I will definately be returning to try the weekend brunch. more

Disappointed - Experience Far From Other Reviews 5/5/2007

After reading all of the the reviews here and elsewhere, we were excited to finally try Five Front, but the experience went progressively down hill from the start. Dinner for 4 started with a late comer basket of 6 pieces of thinly sliced bread, which was removed from the table without our consent prior to entrees being served. Pulled pork shoulder in guajillo (server could not explain what this was at the time of order) not only lacked any kind of interesting flavor, but taste overall. Zucchini blooms stuffed with Manchego were tasty. Genovese style pistachio-basel pesto was flavorless (not sure how that is possible with pistachio and basel as main ingredients). Short ribs, while tasty, were literally submerged in a bowl of sauce and the meat was very fatty, but the accompanying couscous was good. Striped bass was good, but nothing to write home about. Main waitress was subpar and appreared very stressed, though we were at the first service of the evening and the place was half full. We had to refill our wine glasses several times as she was not on top of the table service. The restaurant's atmosphere was very nice but the $230 bill (dinner for 4 with average bottle of wine, without dessert and coffee) did not reflect the experience, service or food. For those prices, one should expect more from the kitchen and the servers. With all that said, we are still interested in giving their brunch a try as this menu and the brunch reviews are what initially piqued our interest. Maybe they'll be better at brunch than they are at dinner. To be continued..... \r \r Pros: atmosphere Cons: service, average food more

Excellent Dining in DUMBO 5/3/2007

Went last night to Five Front with a couple of friends. We recieved amazing service to start, and the food made our night even better. Highly recommend the outside patio, but even the interior bar is a great place to grab a drink and some apps. Food is outstanding!!!!! more

Nice neighborhood restaurant 4/19/2007

Five Front is a great little neighborhood restaurant. The food is excellent with weekly specials, the service is excellent. The outdoor patio is surprisingly quiet given its location under the Brooklyn Bridge. more

suk sandwich 3/28/2007

The worst part was the chicken. I know I shouldn't order chicken at a ""nice restaurant"", but garlic mashed potatoes and carmelized carrots made it impossible for me to refuse. The chicken was overcooked, chewy, and I had to pull grizzle out of my mouth twice. The carmelized carrots tasted like my refrigerator(which i have not cleaned in a long time) and the mashed potatoes were delicious (but so are mine) The crab cake appetizer was alright, but it did not come with the chipotle aioli as promised. My boyfriend liked his fish. It was good; he's right. But it was not great and a few bites of it did not compensate for the su ck sandwich that was my meal. Overall, we spent way too much money for a below average meal. The one positive was that the service was good. I'm bitter. Pros: good service Cons: the food more

Best Huevos Rancheros at Brunch! The Wild Striped Bass with pureed cauliflower is amazing! 1/14/2007

I definitely disagree that the food is unremarkable... I have been there several times for brunch and dinner and I am blown away everytime. The crabcake with cilantro aioli and guacamole is to die for! Another favorite is the hangar steak with the potato au-gratin is excellent. So don't believe everything you here and p.s. Brooklyn is great too! Pros: Amazing and consistent Food! Cons: None at all! more

friends love it....but they love brooklyn, too ;) 11/28/2006

The time it takes to travel from Washington Heights to Brooklyn for brunch creates a hunger that makes just about anything taste good. That's my experience with Five Front - I wolf down everything on my plate and nod along with my friends when the coo about thier food but later cannot recall what I had. It's fun to be at a place that my friends like but I wouldn't go here for brunch without them. Pros: if you like it you love it, not many other options in DUMBO Cons: unremarkable food more

Best in Dumbo ! 10/4/2006

Five Front's menu, decor & service are above reproach - and one, if not the best, dining experience me and my guests have had in a while.\r The hostess made us feel as if she'd known us for years, and the bartender was attentive and friendly as well.\r Seating in the garden is a treat and complimented our meal quite nicely. Our server was energetic and on top of our every need - and had our orders brought to our table in a timely manner . I recommend the Curry Mussels, the Short Rib Ravioli and Panacotta for dessert - Five Fronts Crab Cakes are also a MUST ! On the particular evening that we were there, the owner of Five Front was in the Garden area - and politely and sincerely introduced himself and inquired as to how we were enjoying our dinner.\r Since being to Five Front I've recommended to many people that they shoud stop in - and the ones I've spoken with agree with me as to why I love this place so much. Pros: Food, Menu, Decor more

5 Front: An affront 9/13/2006

The menu is enticing and ambitious. The location and space are beautiful-- especially the back garden. the service (apart from the attentive and careful bar service) is miserable. We were seated in the back garden in anticipation of a fantastic dinner, after perusing the menu while we waited for a table. A half hour after ordering, a waitress (not ours) came to our table and told us that ""there had been a computer malfunction"" and she needed to take our order again. It happens, of course, but is usually compensated by complimentary appetizers or drinks OR an apology-- at the minimum. Nothing. An hour after we RE-placed our order, we were served our appetizers: an heirloom tomato salad with ricotta ($10), which consisted of the fibrous top of an heirloom tomato with ricotta lumped on top, and a barely existant olive oil and basil drizzle. My husband had the short-rib ravioli, which was good.\r \r Another 1/2 hour later, we were served our main courses-- watching all other tables get served around us, that had been seated after we had arrived-- by which time we were so annoyed we had no appetite. My husband had asked that his salmon be served medium-rare: it was well-done and dry. My main course (which was another appetizer-- salmon tartar-- was served with guacamole and nothing to eat it with...a cracker or chips would have been nice. It was piled with a messy lump of cilantro which served no purpose.\r \r We never got an apology for the dismal service. Our server avoided us at every opportunity, and was surly and non-responsive. For such an expensive meal, I was very disappointed on every level. I do not recommend this place. For a fantastic meal in this area, go to Henry's End--just up the street-- for gracious service and a fine dining experience. Pros: beautiful back garden Cons: bad service, bad food. more

Great Brunch! 6/21/2006

This is one of my favorite places. The eggs benedict with crab cakes instead of the bread is the best. Great burgers, great entrees. Nice Staff, the garden is beautiful. We go back every few weeks and take people who are in form out of town. We have never been disappointed. more

Polite, attentive service. 6/10/2006

Lovely, patio garden for brunch. Food was great-prices, also. They have chocolate bread that was delicious and unique. \r Nice-looking, contemporary restaurant with lots of seating. Attention to details, like fresh flowers and newspapers at the bar for individuals. Re-filled water and coffee \r without asking.\r more

Just Perfect 6/28/2005

Last Sunday, my family (12 of us) had a small dinner party at FIVE FRONT and it was just simply wonderful. They could not be more accommodating from setting up the menu prior to us coming (which Patty, the owner had pre-printed) to serving us an impeccable meal. Everyone flipped over the crab cakes and striped bass. Everything was cooked to perfection. The desserts were to 'die for '!! The wait staff was always there and even with a group our size they were one step ahead of our every need. We left FIVE FRONT very full and with smiles on our faces!! We all agreed that we will come back! more
