Disappointing Food 1/24/2010

We went to Fishbone's today for lunch and we're expecting a good meal given some things we've heard and reviews we've read. We were so thoroughly disappointed with the food that it moved us to write our first restaurant review ever. The meal started off with their bread and herbed butter. This was actually the only thing that we did enjoy because the butter had some nice flavor to it. We ordered calamari for an appetizer. The calamari was decent, but I was a little surprised to just receive a plain plate with cocktail sauce when the appetizer costs $11. For this price, you would expect at least a garnish and nice presentation. It looked like something you would order from a diner presentation-wise. One plus about the calamari is that it was perfectly cooked and tender; we just didn't find anything special about the flavor. For the entree, I ordered jambalaya. It looked good when I received it, but I was very disappointed when I actually tasted it. There wasn't really much there in terms of flavor. It almost tasted like they just threw some andoille sausage, shrimp, and tomato sauce over rice. My girlfriend got a bowl of the seafood gumbo. She was trying gumbo for the first time and didn't even want to eat more than a bite. I offered to switch plates with her, but she didn't like the jambalaya either given my description above. The gumbo did not taste like anything I've had before. It was mediocre at best. We took the leftovers home but I don't even think I want to eat it, and I'll usually eat anything even if it's not that good just for the sake of not wasting food. I would describe the service as adequate. Our server seemed to just fulfill her duties at the minimum, even though it was during a slow time. I expect better service from a restaurant with such highly priced items. The menu was large, especially because of the sushi section. It may seem overwhelming to some. I personally did not have a problem with the size, but feel like other people would. Overall, I will NEVER go back to this restaurant. We spent the rest of the afternoon making jokes and pointing out to other restaurants saying ""we should've gone there instead."" Pros: Not much, good atmosphere? Cons: Lackluster food more

Unprofessional Bar Staff 4/5/2009

After visiting for the Final Four games, I will NEVER visit this Fishbone's again. I have visited the one in St. Clair Shores multiple times and loved everything, and expected the same from this one. However after a while of watching the game, the bartenders came over and said ""Here's your tip"" which we found out from someone else was that he thought we tipped $0.75 on a $40 bar tab. We never even had a bar tab! I paid cash for each round and tipped. This was very unprofessional and not acceptable in my book for how a bartender at a nice restaurant should act. Even if that had been true they wouldn't have deserved a tip, since a tip is earned. Then to top that off as we walked out the door to leave one of the other bartenders ran out after us and called us inappropriate names. We don't even know the reasoning behind their actions because he ran back inside and they all refused to talk with us. Which means they know that we did nothing wrong in reality since they wouldn't discuss their issues with us. Wouldn't go back if you paid me unless those bartenders were fired. Pros: Good location Cons: Very disrespectful bar staff more

Down hill.. not like it used to be. 6/12/2008

This place has gone WAY WAY down hill from its former glory days years ago. Service was terrible, the food was bland, and sloppy, and those fun plates of various hot sauces.. all gone.. I would never go back, and our entire party left with thoughts of ""thats it?"" and ""that was terrible"". Pros: Location is good Cons: Food was bland, prices high, service SLOW more

Great Food/ Fun atmosphere, great drinks great service. 6/11/2008

We visited fishbones for my birthday. Our server was great, none of this rude stuff the others spoke of!!! more

Great meal and kid friendly 5/10/2008

I've been there two times over the past year and both times it was better than average. n Thursday night, I went with my family. Although it wasn't packed with kids it was most certainly 'kid friendly'. Very reasonably priced kid's menu. As for my meal, Ahi tuna, it was prepared perfectly(rare) and was of very high quality. Overall it was an enjoyable dining experience and I will definitely go back again. more

Guilty pleasure 4/7/2008

After sampling our Catfish Atchafalaya and our lemonades, we felt the quality matched the price. We were seated very quickly, and were able to get in and out in plenty of time to catch our movie. We were especially amused by the HUGE jumbo shrimp, and tickled to see how well it tasted! I highly recommend this eatery. more

Fun restaurant for a night out... 2/26/2008

...but the food was just fair. The place was PACKED (altho it was a Saturday night), and we had reservations. But they couldn't find them initially, and we had to wait for the entire party (13 of us), and when the entire party arrived we had to wait an additional 15 minutes. Pros: fun for a night out, good food Cons: BUSY, long wait more

Incredible Customer Service, best place to eat in Detroit 8/30/2007

Me and my wife went downtown on 8/20/07 and it was incredibly busy. We made reservations and were escorted to our seats as soon as we walked in. There was also a wait to be seated for patrons that just had walked in. Pros: Amazing customer service, Delcious food, gorgeous decor, fun atmosphere Cons: None. This place is outstanding. more

Good Choice 7/30/2007

Thank You Fishbones - for accomodating us and adverting a disaster Pros: Sundays are cool Cons: unsure at this time more

Please Beware, Poor Service and Very Unsanitary 4/23/2007

My husband and I are Tiger Season Ticket holders and because of the resturant's great location we frequent this place quite a bit. However, twice we have had terrible experiences with the poor staff work ethics. Our latest experience was on 4/21/07 when my husband and I placed ourselves at the bar side closest to the water fall. I ordered a glass of water and a slice of cheese cake with strawberry dressing. After thirty minutes I asked the bartender (Cherry) if she could cancel our order. She replied that she would and that she apologized for the wait. I proceeded to watch the Red wings game on the tv and sip my water. As I was nearing the end of the glass I couldn't help but notice an orange white ring of film lining the inside of my glass, which made it apparent the glass had never been cleaned. I was baffled at that point I was thinking (Hep C, or food sickness). My husband said that's it and asked for the manager. The bartender went to get him and then returned walking over to her friends located to the right of me at the bar, whom she had been serving free drinks to all night. She proceeded to say so that I could clearly hear her, ""I don't care what they think, and my manager won't either, laughing it off."" Twenty minutes later the manager arrived (Tom) and as the bartender expressed to her friends, he didn't act as if he cared at all about the situation. His excat words were, ""I am sorry but sometimes we make mistakes also, I mean sir what do you want me to do about this."" I Pros: great location Cons: poor service, especially managers, very unsanitary more

Fishbones 1/2/2007

This is a great Detroit Restaurant that is attached to the Greektown Casino. Specializing in seafood, they have a huge sushi menu, along with wonderful shrimp and fish items and sandwiches as well. We had a great waitress and a good experience, would recommend highly. more

Good Cajun Food 11/11/2006

I have been to Fishbones several time. I definately like the downtown Detroit location better than their other locations. If you like cajun, this is a pretty decent place to get cajun food. I love their popcorn alligator...it's so good. Overall, I think the food is good. Pros: Good cajun food Cons: Service, downtown parking more

Great Date spot 11/10/2006

A great mix of cujun spices and atmosphere. Always a top pick with me and my sweetheart, it's just a 2 min walk to one of Detroits Casinos and lots of hoppin clubs and bars. Prices are reasonable but sometimes there is a long wait and service can be a little sluggish. But if your in no huury and just want to go out for a great night on the town I highly reccommend Fishbones in Detroit. Pros: Good food, fun atmosphere Cons: Slow service more

Food does not make up for the bad service 9/3/2006

Too many things are going on downtown and service pays for it. Fishbones has food potential but our server had the worse attitude-and everyone at the table knew it. She explained she had to work after the baseball game which was after 11 that night. After putting up with her slamming our plates down with hot food, lying to us about when the sushi bar closes, and nasty facial expression-I had enough and went to the manager. Pros: Nice Ambience, they capture seafood style Cons: Really bad service. more

fishbones is great 5/16/2006

This place is very good. Its in the greektown area.It has a very good staff but it takes a little while for your food to arrive cause its usually pretty busy there. A great selection of food to choose from and the atmosphere is incredible. If you dont like to wait then dont go here. Walk to one of the other restaurants in the area. more

Nice restuarant in Greektown 9/2/2005

This is a very nice place to eat when visiting Greektown downtown. Service is slow so dont be in a rush if that is where you are going to eat but the food is great. A little bit of everything, prices are not too high. more
